Using the phone while it's charging with this charger results in a net drain of battery life so why bother.

This item. I chose because it has circuitry in it for voltage control so hopefully overcharging will not occur, as can happen with common 12 V adapters that plug into the cigarette lighter. Cheap adapters do not do voltage regulation, therefore, you may find that your phone gets warm while charging. This over charging that occurs with unregulated chargers, will shorten the life of your battery.
