This radio does what you need not what you don't. The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear". It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want. It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.
It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag also not a concern to me the way I use it.
I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

It'll do all the VHF channels and weather...even has a weather alert. Ours runs all day on a charge and gets plugged in at night. One time we forgot to charge it and slapped the AA batteries in to keep us online. I love the call tones...lets our comrades know who is calling before they answer. Also like the 'lock' feature that prevents accidental setting changes. For me, the negatives are:
1) It will receive, but not transmit while charging (we overcame this by simply using AA batteries when the rechargeable battery ran low).
2) The set up/menu system is not intuitive we had to keep the manual handy for a couple weeks.
Would I buy another one? In a heartbeat!

I have both the water-resistant model and the less expensive model that comes with the waterproof case. For the money both are excellent. I was having the same problem with both radios leading me to believe there may be a button pushing sequence that would allow the radios to function as advertised. The problem is that under some conditions, the radio gets locked in a situation where the channels and features can't be changed. Also the scanning feature is disabled. The only available capabilities are channels 16/9 and the weather channels.
After wrestling with this for a while,it turns out that the solution is really quite simple. The problem occurs after you enter the weather channels and then then switch to Channel 16. You now loose the ability to scan and change channels. To get out of the problem, enter the weather channels and hold the Menu button down to exit the weather channels. This will restore the functionality. As I think about this, it is logical that the method of getting into the weather channels, and as a result, getting into this problem, was holding the Menu button down.
