This works great. This is the newer version of the Nomad 7 panel and the Guide 10 battery pack.
Pretty simple. Panels charge the battery pack, battery pack charges the electronics (like the iPhone). One thing I really like about this is the small size. That and the fact that I can recharge my Sanyo Eneloop batteries with this panel and the Guide 10 pack. I have many, many of these batteries for use in my Canon camera flashes.
Goal zero does warn that you must have strong sun and the panel positioned correctly to be able to charge an iPhone with the panel itself (without the battery pack). With that said, the first time I had it out I disconnected the Guide 10 and tried to charge my iPhone 5 directly from the USB output on the panel. Worked just fine. If the sun was behind the clouds, or the panel was positioned incorrectly, then I would get a message on my phone saying the accessory might not be supported, or something like that.
Bottom line, it works as advertised. It's a small panel with enough power to charge an iPhone 5 directly. In less than optimal conditions, just charge the AA battery pack and charge from that. That's what it was designed for, anyway, I believe.
I'll be buying a Nomad 13 after this positive experience.

Customer service was excellent, professional and not at all patronizing. Very happy with the product, once I figured out all the connections, which are many.
