Before this, I owned an IPod, and it worked pretty well for me. The battery eventually died for good and I didn't want to get it replaced, so I got this for Christmas. The GoGear is a pretty good MP3 player, with great sound (it even comes with pretty good earbuds) and a slick way to navigate menus.

The good things about this MP3 player are its ease of putting music onto it. It is one of the MP3 players that work perfectly with Windows Media Player, so I sync with that. I believe you can drag and drop into folders, but I haven't tried it.

The sound quality of this MP3 player is excellent. You can use one of the presets or create your own.

Lastly, the look of the MP3 player is very slick. There are no buttons except the volume ones on the side. Everything is controlled by touching various lit up parts of the MP3 player, including a strip in the middle to navigate up and down through your library. This MP3 player shows album art and displays pictures, and has a built in FM tuner and a voice recorder that is suprisingly good quality, great for recording speeches.

The cons of this MP3 player have to do with some of the good. As cool as the navigating is, if you don't put this MP3 player on hold while you're moving around and playing something, you can end up accidently changing the track. I've had this MP3 player freeze on me a few times, but nothing a quick reset couldn't fix. Charging and putting songs on the MP3 player can be a hassle, as they're both done with the same exact cord, unlike the 2 seperate ones for the IPod. This MP3 player isn't gapless, which I was hoping it was, and, most importantly, if your MP3's are encoded in a high quality (I use VBR 128-192), the player slows down and navigating menus lags quite a bit, so you have to have some patience while the player can freeze for up to 5 seconds while you switch menus.

Overall, it's a pretty good player. It does what it's meant to do, with some nice features, but the slowdown while playing a song holds it back from being great. 4 stars.

after a trip to florida with my friend who owned an ipod i came to the conclusion most 20somethings do at some point that i need a harddrive based mp3 player. one thing i absolutely DIDNT want to deal with was itunes however. i looked through many of the alternatives, from iriver to zen sleeks, but this last minute contender won the audition.

i saw it for the first time at best buy and had no previous knowledge it even existed. seeing it did everything i wanted it to do and looked a bit better then the iriver (which was too big) or the zen (which looked like it was made by fischer price). after being informed that the store was sold out of zen sleeks i went ahead and bought this one. i'm glad i did. yes, it uses windows media..but so what? windows media hasnt hindered me yet, and i had it already installed on my pc. i chose the manual option (loading songs i wanted to, and not all of them on my pc at once) and it worked out fine. transfer was quick, taking less then a minute to load upwards of 6 albums at once.

aside from the pc aspect, this thing just looks cool. even my friend who converted me to the mp3 player revolution seemed a bit jealous of it. i quote "i'm down with that thing man" he even commented on the looks. this is impresive when u know that this is the same guy who once called the ipod a "work of art" and said no other mp3 player looks as good. the resolution on the screen is great, and the photos i have uploaded to it look better on this then they do on my pc.

the reason i only give this 4 stars is because of 2 minor "glitches" the first being that while it charges the device stays on, displaying the "synched" screen. the other is that occasionaly switching between songs can take a while (while is an exaggeration) it seems as though the device needs maybe a bit more memory to handle the multiple tasks. this doesnt occur often enough to be a real issue so it only cost it a half of a star.

overall, id vote for this to be an "Ipod killer", or as close as anything's gonna get. navigation is simple and intuitive, and the black background of the display gives it a nice agressive looking vibe. i have no real complaints with it at all, and the glitches i listed are only minor. no, it cant work on every platform, cure AIDS and solve world poverty like some seem to expect it to do. (i find it odd that mp3 players that arent ipods are expected to do MORE then an ipod to get an equal review. it seems it doesnt have to be a good alternative, but lightyears ahead to get any respect)

This is my first mp3 player -I'm 50 years old, and not particulary techno-savvy. I LOVE it. I've put most of our CD collection on it, as well as some photos. Because I haven't used any other players, I don't miss things that some of them do.

Syncing worked easily, and the player itself is just really easy and really fun to use. (In fact, I have to work to resist the temptation to just play with the touch-screen, surfing endlessly through my entire collection and looking at pictures.)

It works fine with a cassette-adaptor in my car stereo, and with my home stereo using the AV docking cradle. Volume is not an issue in the car -in fact, I have to turn it down lower than my usual setting for the radio. On the home stereo, oddly enough, I have to turn it up fairly high, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

It has hung up a couple of times, but reset worked just fine.

I had to remove and re-install the plug-in at one point to be able to transfer pictures. It worked for a while, then stopped, but after re-installation it seems to be just fine again.

The battery display is strange -appears to drop very quickly, then plays for hours flashing like the battery is low. Battery life is iffy, too. The first couple of times I used it, the battery was dead after 6 or 7 hours. After I completely drained and recharged it five or six times in a row, battery life finally moved up over 12 hours.

I'd love to have a power-adaptor for the car, and I am concerned about whether accessories will become available.

But the bottom line is that I love using it and would recommend it to others.

I had the Creative Zen Touch for all of 1 hour before it froze up and I have had nothing but issues with it since. Eventually had to send it back for repair (they wanted 24.95 to look at it but made them waive it). All they did was update the Firmware (which I did from home and it didnt help) and now it is worse than it was before. The day I got it back it froze up and I had to reset it with a paper clip about 10 times since then. Now, it won't even boot up past the splash screen. I can't even shut it off. Have to do the paperclip thing or let the battery die. Even the Recovery mode won't work any more. The ZEN is a piece of Junk..so, since I couldn't use it anymore, I decided to buy an ipod, but I ended up with the Philips GoGear since it was much cooler looking and cost $50 bucks less for same size (30G) and features. I didn't care about the Video function of the Ipod (have a Verizon Wireless V-Cast phone for that!). The Philips has been great!! No issues at all other then the occasional delay between screens (2-3 secs) but it is a mini "computer" after all. I love the album art feature and the FM tuner. I use WMP to sync my tunes. One note: You need to Auto sync playlists to get the actual playlist name to show on the player. I kept doing it manually at first and it just dumped all the songs to the player, but not the actual playlistso I had 1000's of tunes without organization. Then I tried Auto sync'ing the playlists and now they show on the player. Maybe there is a easier way, but it works for me. The thing sounds and looks Greatway better looking than the ugly ipod. Only major downside is lack of accessories. I haven't been able to find a case for it with a clip or armband. Looking at the Philips website, doesnt seem to be much available just yet. Hopefully that will change. I am just going to make my own case in the meantime :-)

This is the first MP3 player that I have bought, and I do think that it performs well. The navigation keys are very touch sensitive, but after you use it a while it is pretty easy to use. Secondly, the menus are very easy to navigate so it is simple to find what you are looking for. One thing that I think it strange is that the unit powers on once you plug in the power cord and you cannot turn it off. I called custemer care and they said that it how it was designed...but I was bit leary because the rep did not sound like he knew the product very well. My biggest complaint about this player is that it uses Windows Media Player to sync between the player and PC. I am picky the way I organize my music and WMP is not very flexible and I find it frusterating. If you like WMP, then you will be fine. Note that you can sync up your files using windows explorer too....but I found that it does not transfer the album art over.
