I purchased an item to mount/carry my kayak on my pickup truck and being 16' long it will definitely extend beyond the length of my truck. I saw this item show up in the other purchases window in Amazon so I added it to the purchase. It looks like just what I need. It is large, red mesh and has grommets. Should work just fine but I haven't tried it yet.

Well made and durable. We tow two kayaks on a boat trailer and they stick out a few feet from the end. These bright red meshes attach easily with caribiners to the kayaks and provide an added measure of safety to cars behind us. Our State also requires something like this when carrying long items on vehicles and trailers. This is a very inexpensive safety device for towing and hauling long items on truck beds and trailers. Highly recommended.

For my purposes the mesh was too far apart which made the flag difficult to view from a distance, I was hoping for a more prominent red flag so need to look elsewhere.
