I purchased this with the purpose in mind of using it as a portable power source for things like when I go camping it can provide power for lights, an air mattress inflator, etc. The battery rating of "18 amp/hour" tells you it should be able to run something drawing ~18 amps for 1 hour, 9 amps for 2 hours, etc. I've even tried using it to power a small inflatable boats trolling motor for over an hour and it didn't drain it, but I mainly kept the motor on the low setting (using ~8 amps, high would use ~15 amps but I used that only ~10 minute of the time I was out).

Note: New units are out with a digital display of battery level showing % of charge (instead of LEDs) and has the charge unit built in (with no "charge port"), so the things I've said about those items may have changed if you're ordering one now. The current pictures show the old one, the new one has the main switch for the cables on the front panel.

The only issue I've had with my unit (why I dropped 1 star) is for charging it, I've had to send power thru the lighter outlet or main jumper cables. The red LED indicating "charging" comes on with it plugged in to their "charge port", but after leaving it plugged in for an hour there was no increase in voltage. I connected up a charger to the other places and instantly saw "12.75V, 12.76, 12.77, etc" (about at the same rate you can say those numbers out loud) showing it was actually charging (and FYI I still used a 500mA charger like they provide, not a 10amp or such). Also the switch for the outlets didn't turn them off, but they pass power fine. Update Dec 2012: I got the guts to open up the case and on the back of the circuit board, I saw a line of solder going across the switch terminals for the "power outlet" switch. I'm 99% sure that shouldn't have been there, so popped it off and now the switch turns off the outlets. Still not sure about the charge issue though and didn't want to risk breaking the circuit board trying to dig too deep. I've since got another of these (but the model with the air compressor) for my sister and it accepts a charge thru the "charge port" normally, so it seems a random problem.

For older units, the battery indicator LEDs come on as follows:

While something's in the "charge jack" (to tell the unit that you're charging it) the red LED shows with under 12.75V, the yellow LED shows for 12.75-13.1V, a green LED shows for 13.1-13.5V and 2 green LEDs show for over 13.5. If nothing is connected to that "charge jack" (hinting you're draining the battery) the red LED shows for under 11.6V, the yellow shows for 11.6-11.9V, a green is on for 11.9-12.25V and double green show for over 12.25V. Those make sense to me because 13-14V is fully charged and what you want to measure while charging, yet down in that 12.5-11.5 area is what you want to measure while draining.

This has a switch for the main "jumper cables" that eliminates arcing as you hook them up and it allows the unit to have a "reverse connection alarm". That alarm sounds if you hook them up backwards before you turn it on (and should prevent an explosion that could result). Without the switch, you can't have that alarm and you can't "turn off" those cables (a review of another unit without a switch says "a fire started in my car since the cables are always on and touched each other"). That switch may add a bit of resistance during a jump start and another step to remember to do, but those safety features are good to consider as well.

As far as it living up to it's title of "jump starting" a car, I have doubts. Just like this battery is ~1/3 the size/weight of a car battery, you won't get but about that much power from it (and the labels like "450 amp" or "900 peak amp" are just a big salesman lie to make it sound big). My proof is from connecting up a 100 amp battery tester to it freshly charged, the battery drops to 9.5V under that load for 5 seconds (and that power draw is close to what a small car starter needs). I was taught in shop class that a car battery should keep 10.5V under 1/2 it's CCA load, so this doesn't pass as even a 200 Cold Crank Amp (so how do they get "450"?).

Update Oct-2012: I tried starting my Ford Festiva (4 cyl) with this alone on a morning with it ~40 degrees out (disconnecting the car battery to partly simulate a dead one). It did start it, but the starter was slow just barely being able to crank it. I tested my car battery the next morning and it's labeled as 500cca, but passed as only a 200cca (showing I need to replace it soon). After doing that test I started the car and didn't notice anything abnormal (with the starter going much better than on the Peak unit alone, even after the drain from the test).

The cars battery condition will also play a big role in whether or not this can "boost" you enough to get you going. If a cars battery is pretty weak (like from leaving your lights on while you went to a movie for 2 hours) but can still provide some power, this can give you some extra power and has a fair chance of getting you going. But if a cars battery is fully drained (like from leaving lights on all night long) and you hook this up to the fully "dead" battery, the dead battery will instantly start "stealing" power (to recharge itself) & probably drain this before you can even get from the hood to the driver seat to start the car. In that situation I doubt you'll get started without another full size car battery or a charging source for 20+ minutes (an a/c charger or car & jumper cables).

Features are good. Materials are bad.

Zipper bag to hold accessories is brilliant. Everything worked well when I got it. It has plenty of power and stays charged for months at a time.

However, after owning it for about a year, and keeping it in the house it has started to fall apart. The air hose is weather checked and will be cracked through soon. The battery clips are plastic with metal inserts. While the clip was attached to a battery, it broke. Unit is nearly useless until I get a new set of clip leads. This unit is better than many models sold at auto parts stores, but it still falls short of a durable, reliable item.

It will transfer information however and I can use it on a mp3 player I have. So it is not money wasted, just not what I wanted. Generac XG7000E Generator

I bought this generator from an Internet vendor who drop-shipped it from the factory. It arrived 4 days later with zero damage; so it was well protected. It comes with spare oil and air filters, spark plug; and two quarts of oil. It does not include a 30-amp extension cord, as some Generac generators do. The user manual is in English and Spanish.

Cons:

Machine is too loud for its intended purpose. Even during the day, with the machine in the back yard 30' away and us in the house, it's seriously annoying. At 10' away, my sound meter registers around 90 decibels. Also, during a home power outage, a generator typically needs to operate at night to keep refrigerators and freezers running. Unfortunately, if you have neighbors close by, you'll have to shut it off at night. Otherwise they would [rightfully] complain about the noise. I'd have to use earplugs to sleep, and it's my machine. The 14.5 HP Generac engine, even with an oversize muffler, is at least as loud as a lawn-mower on full throttle, and no one wants to listen to that all night. Noise would be less of an issue if the generator is used for an "event" or construction site where it could be kept far away, but everyone would rather have a quieter machine.

The 3-position off/run/start rocker-switch is a disaster waiting to happen. Most Generac portable generators seem to use this same switch design. To stop a running machine, Generac says to push the rocker switch to the left side, which is the stop position. Unfortunately, it is too easy to mistakenly push the right side of the rocker, which engages the starter. If you do that with the engine running, the starter gear will engage the spinning engine flywheel, possibly causing internal engine damage. The manual doesn't even warn you. (See Customer Images to see how I addressed this design blunder.)

In any case, a safer way to stop the machine is to close the fuel valve, which starves the engine to a stop in about a minute. This also reduces the amount of gas in the carburetor, which could gum-up over time.

The manual says the fuel tank has to be drained and removed in order to replace the battery, since the battery is hidden under the tank. One side panel also has to be removed. Even a mechanic would be frustrated with this time-consuming hassle. Draining the fuel tank is also dangerous, as gasoline is highly flammable and has toxic fumes. In fact, Generac could face a huge liability lawsuit if a customer was injured or killed trying to replace a battery. And just what does Generac expect their non-mechanically inclined customers to do; haul a 245 pound generator to a distant service center for a battery replacement? Some customers, like my wife, aren't strong enough to start a 14.5 HP engine with a pull rope, so a battery start is mandatory. Every machine will need a new battery every few years or so, which means that if you keep the generator long enough, you can't avoid this issue.. "Under the tank" was not Generac's only option. There are other places where the battery would fit just fine and also be accessible. When battery change time comes on my machine, the new battery is going to be mounted in a better location.

The hardware for the circuit breaker reset buttons and many of the screws/nuts/washers/etc. are only zinc coated steel, which can easily rust. It makes no sense to use rust-prone hardware on a machine that must be used outside. Obviously, all hardware should be non-rusting materials such as stainless steel, brass, bronze, or aluminum. Some of the hardware is standard and could be upgraded by the customer, while other hardware like that around circuit breakers, cannot.

The handle is only fair. It locks into the upright position with a single button, but while rolling the machine around, the handle-to-frame hinge connection bounces slightly. It just isn't solid. The tires are the never-flat type, but roll as if they aren't perfectly round.

There is no logical reason for this machine to have a 2-year warranty when the similar Generac XP model generators have a 3-year warranty.

Pros:

We've used our XG7000E six times as of this writing, due to electric company outages ranging from a few hours to two days. It's been a reliable machine.

The engine (entire machine actually) is made in Waukesha Wisconsin and has an automotive-type oil pump and spin-on filter. This design provides far better internal lubrication than the splash-method employed by most portable generators. As a result, engine life should be significantly lengthened. Generac claims up to 4 times longer. For replacement oil filters, search Amazon or Google Shopping on: Generac 070185B

Has a high-oil-temp and low-oil-volume automatic shutoff, to protect the engine from damage, plus a decent-sized air filter..

Assembly was simple: install wheels & front support strut; add [provided] oil, and connect battery lead to starter. I charged the battery for an hour with the included charger, even though it was factory charged. Has a charge jack to receive the charger plug. I added fuel, pulled the choke button all the way out (3/4"), turned the gas valve on, pressed the off/run/start rocker-switch to the start side, and it fired up immediately. Each time since, it starts quickly. Everything seems to work and there are no gasoline leaks or fumes from storing the machine in a closed storage room.

Voltage (122.1 +/per phase) and hertz (61.6) is very close to what our power company provides (124v 59.9 hertz). Should be good enough for all but the most sensitive equipment.

It's well made. Tubular welded frame is hardened steel for strength, and it shows. There is no perceptible twisting or flexing (other than at the handle hinge) when rolling it around. That gray-colored band on all four sides of the machine is sturdy painted sheet metal.

The 9-gallon all-steel gas tank is quite solid and includes an integral, and accurate, fuel-gage. (Reviews of similar Generac generators complain that the filter-screen in the filler tube should go deeper into the tank to keep it out of the way of the gas can snout, but it seems fine to me.) I bought a couple of Justrite Type II steel 5-gallon gas cans for the generator, as the Type II's are much safer than my 40-year old Eagle Model S-5 steel gas can. Unless it's under a heavy load, my machine runs just over 13 hours on a full tank of gasoline. Add Sta-Bil Fuel Stabilizer to old gasoline in the tank, to help keep it "fresh"...

Excellent tool-less method for changing oil. A 6" rubber hose is connected to the base of the engine, with a screw-on cap. To drain the oil, remove that cap and the oil-fill-hole cap. There's plenty of room under the hose for a decent sized pan to catch the oil and it doesn't drip on the frame. Unscrew the old oil filter by hand, fill a new filter with oil, oil its rubber gasket, and screw it on by hand. Machine's oil capacity is 1.5 quarts. An LED meter displays total machine usage, to the tenth of an hour. Generac advises the 1st oil change at 30 hours and 100 hours thereafter.

The three receptacles are protected with a snap-on rubber cover for weather protection. The two dual 125v receptacles are the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) type. The machine has three circuits: two 120v 20 amp, each with a dual NEMA 5-20R GFCI receptacles, and one 240v 30 amp, with a single NEMA L14-30 locking receptacle.

Includes a battery charging transformer that plugs into a 120v house receptacle with the other end going to the charging jack on the unit. Generac cautions against leaving it connected longer than 48 hours as this could ruin the battery! In an e-mail exchange, a Generac Customer Support technician sent this canned advice: "I do not recommend using a battery charger continuously while not in use. I recommend charging the battery with the provided charger once every 2 weeks for no more than 48 hours.".

In my opinion, having to remember to follow that schedule for the life of the machine is a ridiculous hassle. So, when my generator is not in use, it's connected to a Battery Tender [intelligent] trickle charger. Generac also says to run the machine every two weeks to keep the carburetor from gumming up. I keep a clipboard chart to record the date when the machine is serviced; or run, which I do every two or three months, rather than every other week.

When the machine is running, the control panel's two LEDs shine on it for illumination.

Summary:

Generac could easily resolve the problems listed and except for the larger muffler and rust-proof hardware, it wouldn't even cost more. This should be expected of a quality American made machine that's more expensive than the competition. To their credit, the major things are well done (engine, alternator, frame), but other things such as that stupid rocker switch, poor battery placement, and loud muffler, should be better.

Bought this generator brand new on Saturday.

Followed all assembly instructions and added oil and gas.

Would not start either by battery or pull-start.

Thought I would charge the battery overnight still would not start.

Looked for a twisted gas line (as I read that someone else found this to be their problem). Gas line was fine.

Finally decided to look at the spark plug.

You have to take off the side panel to access it, but it's easy just remove the four hex head screws.

As soon as the cover came off I saw what the problem was the spark plug wire was not connected to the spark plug.

Attached the wire, put the side panel on, and then it started right up.

I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS IS AN AMERICAN-MADE PRODUCT AND I HAD TO FIND AND THEN FIX AND UNFORGIVABLE MANUFACTURING ERROR.

But if it runs well and serves me through power outages, then I'll be happier but I will always have this story to tell.

Also, I called Generac at lunch today to see if I could speak to a rep to see if they could help me troubleshoot it over the phone. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. All the rep did was give me the names of four businesses in my local area that I could call for help. This is unsatisfactory! I felt like I was stuck with a brand new generator that wouldn't start and that I would have to incur additional expense to get it running.

Make sure you add enough gas to properly pressurize the lines when you first start the generator! I had added what I considered just enough to "test it out" and it would not start. A few other of my buddies had the same generator and mentioned that they had had the same problem, all you have to do is add gas, it then fired up on the first pull. I find the generator quiet, sounds like a lawn mower. I think some expect it to be "quiet", come on, it's a generator, not an appliance!

I've waited for three months for the S50 to come out. I finally found one and had it installed professionally in my car. I love what the S50 can do, and I'm overall very pleased, but I have some problems with the S50. First the good stuff. It's a great design with an awesome LCD display. The station, artist and song are always visible. None of the scrolling stuff. The base has a rotating know to change channels, replay songs, press to record a song you like while it's playing and a host of other options. Very cool. The removable lightweight unit is about the size of 2/3 of a deck of playing cards. With this unit, you can remove it from your car, plug in the headphones and play your downloaded MP3's and recorded content from sirius. The rechargeable battery is supposed to last around six hours. I haven't drained it yet. It recharges automatically when plugged into the base unit. Additionally, it will automatically download music from your three most listened to stations...ingenius. Also, if you like a song you're listening to, you simply press the rotating knob, and the song is recorded for you onto the portable unit...awesome! Additionally, if you like a song you just heard, you can click the knob, and it plays again. You can then skip ahead to the current song playing or keep listening. You can also pause the broadcast and unpause without a hitch. As you turn the knob to change channels, a voice tells you what channel you're selecting which is a cool feature if you want to keep watching the road.

I love the selection of music that is available for my taste (alternative stuff). Some stations are lame, the all Elvis channel or all Bruce Springstine channel for example, but that's a matter of taste. Besides, there's plenty to choose from no matter what your taste in music.

And now, the bad stuff. 1) I was disappointed with the sound quality. I would describe the quality as somewhere between good FM radio and AM. Voices often sound like they're speaking or singing through a tin can. I thought it may have been the FM broadcaster in the unit, but when I play MP3's in the car through the unit, they sound great, so I guess it's not enough band width in the broadcasts. 2) The portable unit does not have an equalizer option. You can't adjust the bass or treble which even the cheapest MP3 players have. That was poor oversight on their part. 3) My biggest gripe is that the removable unit will sometimes vibrate loose, causing a loss in the transmission. This is very annoying, but I'm getting used to tapping my unit from time to time to prevent it. I think part of the problem there is that my unit was installed so that it lies in a flat position. I may have to get that changed, despite the fact that I love the way it's positioned right now. Sirius should have designed it so that the unit locks in. However, when you lose the signal (not from the unit vibrating loose), the voice asks if you'd like to switch to downloaded content which can be done very easily.

UPDATE: I had the unit re-installed so that it's not flat, no problem now with the unit slipping out.

Moreover, I'm very pleased with the S50. If you're aware of sound quality issue I'd definitely recommend the unit.

First off, let me say that I view the current S50 as a prototype. I think they rushed to market in order to have the product available by the time Stern started broadcasting. The fact that none of the accesories (including the home dock) are available yet shows that this product was rushed. The bugs and missing features, too, indicate a rushed release. Wait a few months and you will probably see prices drop, reliability increase, and features added.

Missing features: (1) There are no audio settings (not even the omnipresent "bass boost"). It should be against the law at this point to release a product like this without at least some sort of rudimentary equalizer. I have found the sound to be very poor largely because of this. The bass is lacking and the highs sound tinny. (2) If you are listening to one of your automatically recorded favorite channels in playback mode and leave the playback and return, you do not return to the point where you left (even if you don't turn the player off). You must start at the beginning of the recording and cycle through the tracks to find your spot. Remember those old CD players that started at the beginning of the disk each time you turned the player on? Would you buy one today? (3) Can I get a small keypad on the dock so I can change channel without using the dial? Come on, Sirius has almost 200 channels. I'm supposed to scroll through them one at a time? True, the remote has a keypad, but I will lose that thing. (4) Unlike your Tivo or DVR (which this unit is constantly compared to), the unit has only one tuner. That means that you can not listen to live radio while recording another channel. Why would you need to record a show that you listened to live? (5) Also unlike Tivo and DVR, the unit will not turn itself on for a scheduled recording. That means, if you want to record Howard Stern in the morning while you are still asleep, you'll have to leave the unit on all night. If you were able to track down a home unit during the limited release in December or you have purchased a DC/AC adaptor, you can just leave your S50 on at home. If you only use yours in the car you will find your battery dead and will be calling AAA for a jump start if you leave this thing on all night.

Design flaws: (1) The designers thought it would be cool to have the top of the player shaped like a triangle instead of sitting flush like every other MP3 player. Thats no problem if you only want to listen with the provided headphones (which suck), but if you want to use aftermarket headphones, the 1/8 jack for many will be to big to fit (the housing of the jack, not the jack itself of course). (2) The unit frequently freezes up and fails to respond to any commands. You have to remove the battery and wait ten seconds before reinstalling it in order to "reset" the unit. (3) Six hours of battery life? Thats at the low end of what I would consider exceptable. That is not a huge problem now, but what about a year from now when the battery begins to lose its charge and only holds, say four hours? (4) The interface is anything but intuitive and needs some major tuning. Example: the "Shut off Device" option is in the Setup Menu. Every time I turn this thing off I feel like I'm about to make a major change in the way the device functions. (5) Unlike most players, which have a full-time display, the screen on this unit goes black unless you have recently touched a button. I don't need the screen to glow all the time, I just want the text of the song on the screen so I know what I'm listening to. Only the backlight should shut off when the unit is "idle." You can go into "display settings" and change the screen to always be on, but since the backlight will always be on, this will drain the already inadequate battery.

I could go on, but I want to wrap this up. I give this product three stars instead of two or one because it is such a great idea. Finally, we can save large amounts of satellite radio content and play it back on a portable. Also, if you want to listen to Stern, but don't have the time to catch the show live, this is the only thing to buy.

Would I buy it again? No, not even at a lower price. My advice is wait and see what comes next. This is a new idea, using new technology. Things will only get better from here on. Wait a few months rather than blowing $350 on a prototype that never should have left the Quality Control Department in its current condition.

Update: Sirius issued a software patch for this unit. Now you can fast-forward through recorded material (before you could only skip tracks), schedule recordings for music shows in addition to talk shows, and save more individual songs to your "my sirius songs" folder.

My advice stays the same. Wait for the next generation S50. It will undoubtedly have two tuners, an equalizer, better sound, and will lack the bugs in this unit. Or, you can buy my S50 used on Amazon.com the day the next generation comes out(I will definitely be upgrading).

Second Update: Today is 2/9/06. My S50 is dead. All of the sudden it stopped receiving live broadcasts today. I turn it on while docked and all I get is the startup sound and the Sirius logo screen; then the unit freezes up. Now this thing is basically an Ipod with bad battery life and poor navigation. Luckily I have an extended warranty...

I bought this primarily for the Tivo-like recording feature and that's a huge disappointment. If you want to record a full Howard Stern show, forget it. It's not designed to record that many hours and it rarely records the full amount it's supposed to. Show are almost always incomplete or the device frequently crashes! I've had to remove the battery multiple times because it was frozen.

If you're a Mac user, there's no software interface fo the MP3 functions.

The sound quality is pretty mediocre, even with full signal strength.

Given the cost (don't forget to add $100 to be able to use it at home) and the mediocre performance, don't buy this.

Anyone giving this product less than 4 stars is Ignorant and/or bitter, because they spent over 300 bucks on something they didn't research or don't know how to use. NO it does not get live broadcast without being docked (either in your car or in your home) But it doesn't claim to!, and NO you can not set up a recording segment (longer than simply recording one song) for any of the music stations(but this isn't nearly as important as i originally thought it would be)

Let me tell you what it can do. I've had mine for a little over a day now so I'm not an expert YET but i have gotten pretty familiar with the product. The most important/impressive thing that this product does (which has been overlooked by or atleast not explained clearly by anyone YET) is the "MY sirius Channels" function. Your S50 will "automatically" ( I left my unit on and docked while I went to sleep) record content from your most listened to channels...which in my case was the channel that i left it on while i was sleeping. when i checked my s50 in the morning i had 5+ hours of Quasi recorded content "saved" under "my sirius channels" I sorted through the saved content which coulden't be more convieniet ( you can FF RW Pause and if you like/choose Record and the greatest part is you don't even have to listen to the full song to record it you can simply hit the "love" button to record, then hit the ff button once and you are skipped ahead to the next song, and yes the one you recorded is saved in your memory. Using this technique I was able to save 68 songs worth of material in about an hour or so (that represents about 20% of the memory for the unit. Tonight I'll let the S50 "automatically" record more music for me and then tomorrow i'll record and save only what i want and delete the rest, which will make room for the S50 to "automatically" record some new content for me to browse through.

Everything else about what this product can do is explained pretty well in the product specs or at I wanted to explain about the recording function b/c this is what seperates this product from other music players. As far as docking your S50 with your computer and using the software goes, it's pretty simple and easy to work with. However if you are used to using Itunes you will realize that "my sirius studio" (the media player used to store and manage your music files on your pc) is incredibly basic but so far has worked w/o problems...(I was also able to transfer MP3's to my S50 via this software.

Ok I'm a big Howard Stern fan so I had to get the S-50. Let me start by saying the most important thing, for those people who are complaining about not getting the home kit, I have a brilliant suggestion: GO BUY A 5-VOLT AC ADAPTER. That's all you need. I too was pissed when I found out that the home dock wasn't even available, and I am planning on only listening to it at home, but then I realized all you need to do is go buy an adapter and you can plug the "car kit" in at home too. Genius, huh? Anyways, on to the review of the radio...

UPDATE: I forgot to include that with the car kit, you will not only need a 5-volt adapter, but you will need something thick and VERY metallic, like a cookie sheet or a pie tray to attach the "car magnet". This is a rather crude but cheap way to replace the total lack of supply of the home docks.

So far so good. Sucks that you can't adjust bass/treble, but the fact that this thing is not only a satellite radio, but also an .MP3 player makes up for this drawback. You can record any song or program you want. Another awesome feature. I, like everyone else, was disappointed when I found out it's not really "portable" with live content, only with the stuff you have recorded onto it. The good, the bad.. and the ugly. The ugly part being that the Sirius software on the computer is buggy as hell. I put some .mp3s on it, and before I know it, the software bugs out and won't run. I had to uninstall it, and re-install it many many times. I'm not the only one who has had this problem either, so I recommend that you put the .mp3s on there that you really want for a long time to avoid this hassle. All complaints aside though, this is a great piece of technology and the pros outweigh the cons. Lots of people are pissed, but most of them are using it in their cars, and since I'm not driving with it, I don't have a problem.

In short, the fact that I can play .mp3s on the same device that I can listen to Howard Stern and Eminem's satellite channels on makes this a wonderful Christmas present and I'm pretty happy with it. But if you have a car, you might want to think about getting a different Sirius radio, one that's a little more reliable through speed bumps, weather, and lots of engine restarts. From what I've read it flakes out a lot in the car, and if you're just using it to drive, why not play your songs on your regular CD player and buy a cheaper Sirius radio just for the satellite?

I was about to buy this jumpstart system from amazon and noticed that Target had it instore for around $15 cheaper (look at more buying options to the right of your screen and find it instore if the store is in your area).

Things to note before you decide to go buy the jumpstart system.

1. Look at the cranking AMPs (ampere is quantity of electric charge). You want to look for something above 400 AMPs , this Duracell has about 400 AMPs. I personally prefer LOOKING at my battery in my car and getting a jumpstart system with around the same crank amps as my batteries CCA( cold crank amps) at 0 F, the battery has this rating on it. Note: The more the amps the more your pay.

Do not look at the peak AMPs rating, those are manufacture ratings so rather useless.

2. Avoid all the bells and whistles, trust me, just go for what you buying, a jumpstart system. Okay may be a polarity reversal alarm and a flash light on it and a 12 volts cigarette connector.

3. Differentiate between a battery charger and a jump starter. Read what you are getting.

4. What car are you buying it for? SUV (V8) need more power than four cylinders(smaller cars). Again do not go for a 300 amp jumpstart system on a SUV, you setting yourself for disappointment, spend a little more, feel more comfortable.

5. AC charger for this jumpstart system comes is 13.8 Vdc, 400 mA. Do not use anything else to charge it, this is because you cause fluctuations to your jumpstart system, thus messing it up, so keep your AC charger safe, that is do not misplace it.

6. Jumpstart systems are not buy and forget systems, take care of it it will take care of you. I bought this jumpstart system and left it my car for a week in temps that were 0 F to 10 F, the cables froze and cracked, had to get a new one, wish the cables were more rubber than plastic. The cables couldn't withstand the low temps, that is why I am rating it a 4/5.

All in all, it is a decent system but will not start a dead battery ( I prefer looking for one that can start a dead battery next time) and it will not withstand high or low temps.Best setting 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal.

Charge is once a month, test it regularly, let it charge for 48 hours when you get it and charge it after use, do not leave it in your trunk!

Have had it for a few months. Seems to be of good quality and is working well. The connector stays connected during handling and it seems to have a decently fast charging rate. The only downside is the blue power LED is pretty bright and I need to aim it away when driving at night; I'll put a sticker over the LED to dim it.

Far better than the previous no-name cheap charger whose connector had to be pressed sideways to make contact, resulting in frequent cheeps and buzzes as the phone switches between charging and not charging.

With the Cellet I can use my iPhone while charging with no distractions.

Revision: the connector shell popped apart, and needs a dab of epoxy. Subtract 1/2 star...

I ordered the charger and received it in the mail quickly. I used the charger one time, and the second time I went to use it (7/9/12) I noted the following. The blue light no longer lit, and after the charger connected to my phone it failed to start charging. It was dead! I also noted that the metal clip that attaches to my iPhone had become disengaged from the plastic piece you hold on to when attaching the charger to the phone. In truth, this is cheaply made and I got what I paid for. I contacted Amazon and they immediately offered a refund. Solid marks from Amazon customer service but poor product. I do not recommend this! I will be looking for an alternative.

Ordered this charger because it claimed to be "Apple Certified". When you read the fine print on the package it says" 'Made for iPod' and 'Made for iPhone' mean that an electronic accessory had been designed to connect specifically to iPod or iPhone, and HAS BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE DEVELOPER to meet Apple performance standards. Please note that the use of this accessory with iPod or iPhone may affect wireless performance." It also says that Apple has nothing to do with the "certification" of this device.

The ad in Amazon says iPhone 4S compatibile. The packaging mentions iPhone 4, but does not say anything about the iPhone 4S. I am using it with my iPhone 4S, so far it seems to work OK. Able to send and receive call on bluetooth while plugged in and charging.

Did not give it 5 stars because of the misleading information.

I bought this to replace a truly crappy Shark rechargeable vacuum. The DeWalt was one of four that I had decided on (the other three being the B&D PHV1800, Eureka 71A, and B&D CHV1500 in descending order of price). I ultimately chose the DeWalt because it uses a standard DeWalt power tool battery, has a washable filter, and was the only wet/dry vacuum of my selections.

The box contains the vacuum itself, rechargeable battery, fast charger (will charge a completely flat battery in about an hour), and a thin but complete owner's manual.

The DeWalt's design is all business. It's about the size of two irons or half a shoe box. The top has a very grippy rubberized handle that's set above a large (but not stiff) responsive power switch. It's very easy to turn the vacuum on and off with one hand and very difficult to do so accidentally. A plastic vacuum hose runs from the back of the unit over the top (the handle) to the vacuum nozzle on the front of the unit. You can easily pull the hose out of the nozzle to get into smaller crevices; put the hose back in and it's a normal hand vacuum. Underneath, in the back you've got a black plastic debris bin that's held in place with a beefy (but, again, not too stiff) latch. In front of that is the standard DeWalt battery pack.

Although it's one of the heavier vacuums out there, the weight is well balanced. You can easily tilt the vacuum in all directions without feeling like you're fighting the weight of the battery and/or the vacuum motor. You can vacuum vertical surfaces just as easily as horizontal ones. You CAN use the vacuum vertically if there's water in the collection bin; the bin seals tightly enough to the base that leakage isn't a problem. However, having too much water in there could make it splash into the motor assembly. So the moral is: If you've got water in the collection bin, empty it out before doing anything vertical (or hold the vacuum horizontal and use the detachable hose).

So, how well does it work? Quite well, in fact. The motor is very powerful and was able to easily pick up all manner of bits that I threw at it including drywall dust, small finishing nails, screw anchors, and cat hair from a wood floor. It also did an excellent job removing cat hair from upholstery despite its lack of a power brush or upholstery comb. In the car, it easily picked up all the sand, dirt, pebbles and occasional penny without any complaints, including bits that were embedded in a damp carpeted floor mat.

Emptying the bin is simplicity itself and takes less than five seconds to complete. The filter seems to be doing an excellent job so far; even with a bin full of drywall dust, there's no "cloud" when you turn the vacuum on again. I haven't yet needed to clean the filter but it's easily removable and is washable. (EDIT 03-24-08: I finally had to wash the filter. It lost about 70% of its suction after pulling up a buttload of spackle dust, so I removed and tapped the filter against the inside of a trash can. A HUGE cloud of dust was released. About a minute at the sink with a small stiff bristled scrub brush and the filter came clean. I let it dry overnight before reinstalling it; meanwhile I rinsed out the collection bin and cleaned up the unit itself. By morning it was back to its old self again, sucking up everything and scaring the cats.)

The battery lasts friggin' forever. Out of the box the battery had a partial charge on it that lasted about 20 minutes. After charging for about half an hour in the included charger I was able to vacuum pretty much every corner and edge in the house, plus my car, without losing any vacuum strength. A big selling point for me was that it uses standard DeWalt power tool batteries so finding replacements will be incredibly easy.

My only real issue with the vacuum is one that has been mentioned before: This vacuum is LOUD and does emit a power tool-like whine which some people can find annoying. I doubt it's any louder than my full-size vacuum cleaner but since it's held in your hand rather than being dragged on the floor, it's closer to your ears and therefore might sound louder. So far as 18v handheld vacuums I compared it against this one is about average in noise, and compared to all handheld vacuums I looked at this is definitely one of the louder ones. I therefore wouldn't consider this to be "bad design" but simply a consequence of a larger and more powerful motor. Even so, since there are other 18v handhelds out there which aren't as loud, I think DeWalt could have done a little something to quiet it down just a little more.

I also would have liked to have a transparent debris bin so that I could see how full it was. This feature exists on at least 2/3 of the handheld vacuums out there today. I recognize DeWalt's "yellow and black" design decision here probably overrode this as a possible feature.

The only other thing I would have liked to see on this vacuum is a few more accessories; namely, a shoulder strap (so you can walk around using the hose to clean things like window sills and such) and a few hose accessories like an upholstery brush or pinhole nozzle. Still, even with these minor shortcomings I'd definitely buy this one again.

I was excited to get this vac as I needed a commercial quality portable for the random handyman jobs my boss sends me to in between regular framing gigs. Having an extra battery and charger to use with my other Dewalt 18 volt tools made this the vac to buy. I'm on the fence as to whether or not I would buy it again.

Did you read in any of these reviews that it is LOUD? Well, it is. It is not just that the vacuum is loud, but that it is an extremely high-pitched whining kind of loud. If I use it without earplugs I begin to get irritable like when I have to listen to a broken car alarm, a yapping poodle (oh, isn't he so-o-o cute!), or a toddler who isn't getting what he wants in the supermarket candy aisle. I have tried to adjust the pitch by SLIGHTLY covering the air intakes and outputs with blue painters tape to no avail. It is like an 18 volt motorized whistle. The fact that the vacuum operates at a mere arm's length from your ears exacerbates the problem.

You figure that if you buy an 18 volt vacuum made by Dewalt that you are going to get some serious suction, right? Not the case with this vacuum, or at least the one I bought. My 7.2 volt Dustbuster is much stronger than this vacuum. When I'm on the job I usually need to pick up sawdust, wood chips, drywall dust, and small screws and finish nails. The Dewalt leaves something to be desired when it comes to these materials, requiring me to go over and over the dirty area to get all the dust, and leaving me to pick up the bigger debris by hand. It isn't a clogged filter either, as I keep the filter meticulously clean on this, and on all my vacuums. I find it hard to believe that the engineers on this project were content to let a Dustbuster outperform this cool looking vacuum in suction strength.

There are some solid points about this vacuum. First off, the thing seems to run and run on a fully charged battery. If it does have 1/2 the suction of the Dustbuster, at least it runs several times as long. In the end that may equal as much or more dirt being picked up per charge.

The batteries and charger are compatible with your other dewalt tools.

The vacuum is made of thick, heavy duty plastic that, so far, has endured all the rigors of commercial use, including being at the bottom of the Jobox under a heap of other tools. It is not fragile.

I have not had it clog up yet, even when the canister is full up solid to the dustport it keeps on vacuuming. I know this doesn't sound quite possible but it is my experience. It can deal with drywall dust which is the bane of many vaccums.

It vacuums liquids. It can be used to clean up while wet polishing counter tops or wet cutting concrete in a situation where water can't be allowed to go all over the place. I have used mine to drain the water from a low spot on a wet, leaky roof so that I could perform repairs.

The collection bin can be emptied and reinstalled in about 6 seconds. The HEPA quality filter is easy to access and rinses off under the tap. (I don't think that you are supposed to scrub this type of filter with a brush or anything as you may damage the rather delicate-and expensivemembrane.)

It looks way cool.

There you have it. The vacuum performed less well than I expected as far as its suction strength goes. It is annoyingly loud. On the other hand it is useful for wet tasks and I'm not afraid to let it get knocked around, it'll probably last many, many years. I just ordered a Makita 14 volt vacuum, which received glowing reviews here on Amazon, before I wrote this review. I plan on using the Makita to keep my client's floors clean of dust and debris and will use the Dewalt on other, task specific jobs.

Dustbuster that runs on my 18V batteries....hard to beat for convenience. Good battery life and pretty good suction, but it is LOUD with a really high pitched sound that buzzes in your ears. It comes with one XRP 18V battery which is about $60 so the cost of the vac is $70 or so. Was great to use in my attic rather than dragging out the big shop vac. I tried and returned the 2 gallon vac. This one has about the same suction and is cheaper and smaller. Hose detaches for cleaning in corners etc. Other than the noise...I love it.

For a handheld cordless vac, this works well. Suction is adequate for picking up sawdust, small nails, screws, drywall dust, etc. Used for the first time today on a wet clean-up and it worked great. No it won't replace my full size shop vac, but that isn't why I bought it. Its great for bringing into the house to clean up work messes that don't justify the large plug-in vac, or when you don't want to junk up the house-vac with work debris. Battery life is really good. Bought it about a month ago and have used it about a dozen times without charging again until today. None of the clean up jobs were significant just various wood dust and chips... but still impressive battery life.

I've owned and discarded any number of small portable dustbuster type vacuums over the years. In every case, they run well for a time, then go in the trash bin after the batteries lose charge capacity and are not worth replacing. This DeWalt is the best alternative I've found yet.

Pros: very powerful, swappable batteries (especially good compared to the NiCads in usual dustbusters that become useless quickly), small but solid. Detaching hose feature is a plus. Easy to unload the waste and clean the filter. wet/dry feature quite useful in the real world. Lots less loss of vacuum power as the collection bin fills as compared to other units we've owned.

Cons: Pricey, stuck to the 18 volt power pack only (other DeWalt design will take several different voltage packs), needs a crevice tool to be included.

Observation: No more noisy than other portables of this size. Industrial look does not really go well in most home situations, but that's just a matter of taste. Stick it in a closet if you are really bothered.

Overall: Much preferred to even the most powerful consumer dustbusters, despite the price. Rated 4 not 5 stars for lack of power pack options.

For $6.95 this thing is perfect for my Galaxy S3, I can use the power sucking GPS in the car and it still charges to full at about 1% per minute. If you don't get a charger that is a minimum 1 amp like this one, you won't be able to charge your device while using phone features like the GPS, so make sure you always read the specs for these things and make sure you get 1 amp output. This particular model also has a second port for simultaneous charging of a tablet or other device at 2.1 amps, but I've only used the one port for the phone.

It is much smaller than other chargers and is almost flush, does not stick out from the socket at all, I find the small footprint a great feature. I purchased this with a Samsung OEM cable as there is a white version of this charger that comes bundled with a cable that is inferior according to the reviews, so if you buy this, I recommend the Samsung cable that is from an official OEM, therefore it fits the phone charging port perfectly, off brand ones can be loose and fall out while charging, so beware. It's such as relief to not have to worry about my phone's battery running low as much.

I live in the Mid-Atlantic where the sun is unpredictable, but wanted a green generator. I purchased two additional Boulder 30's to maximize charge potential. However, the most I've got out of the four panels in one partly cloudy day is 40 watts of charge, which is scary as the panels are supposed to be 30 watts a-piece. I'll have to wait until a non-cloudy day to see what I can max out at and let you know...

Other than the small issues I've tested so far, this thing is pretty cool and self-explanatory, convenient load plugs and the top easily disassembles to test and/or replace the internal battery. The Goal Zero website said the battery has a 20 year life cycle, but that does depend on the amount of use it gets.

12/29-I did a run-down test with my refrigerator from full charge (average 110w draw). I got 16-18hrs (and I say that because I fell asleep and it was on, 3 hrs later it was off). So here's the rub, no alarm to let you know its drawing down like a UPS does. But the back up time was more than what I hoped for. The idea was to run the refrigerator and re-charge the Yeti with solar panels to keep it running as much as possible. I couldn't charge as we had a storm roll in with no sun, lucky I have electricity to use the power cord...

Pro's:

-Great for emergency use but not for overly extended periods of time where you can't guarantee having the sun for recharge. (Ideal for fair weather camping or occasional home use/outdoor parties).

-No need for gas, clean and quiet.

-Can be put outdoors while charging from the sun and kept indoors all other times. (I've even charged it indoors in my foyer that catches the sun in the morning)

-Convenient plug-n-play design.

-While the Yeti is very heavy, the handles and optional cart are a must! I can move it around by myself with the cart. Lifting is another story.

-The solar panels are made well and have mounting holes built in.

Con's:

-The display occasionally goes to zero output and the battery indicator doesn't update (but the output power is still on). The product card says to shut the output off and wait 60 seconds then it will correct itself, but if you just wait, it will come back, eventually. So they already know there's a problem with monitoring.

-No alarm for when the battery is about to die. It just shuts off, kind of like a gas generator, just dies.

-The USB section does not charge my Blackberry. I have to use the 120v plug to charge it. Otherwise, it does charge other USB devices fine (like iPhone).

-The Goal Zero array for the solar panels is not rated well. I didn't purchase it and need to make my own or wait for an alternative.

The black laminate backing to the panels attracts heat, it absorbs heat which reduces the Wattage output to Physical Test Conditions of these panels. Heat decreases amp output. So these panels on average will perform to the average PTC of a standard 20watt panel with a white laminate backing.

Generator is way over priced for the 100 Amp hour battery capacity offered for this generator. 100 amp hour battery at most costs $250 so do the math when you couple it with a inverter and controller which could all be had for under $1000.00 as a package.

The greater the Depth of Discharge the less life expectancy of the generator.

Goal Zero loosely bases a statement that you will get 100's of charge cycles, and wont accept accountability or back the statistics that a full depth of discharge reduces the life of the battery by 50%.

Thats alot of money to throw away, consumers need to do their home work for what they pay for or a consumer may get burned in the process.

I'm sure it would be ok for just usb products but beyond that I don't see it being useful. I absolutely feel it was a waste of $1700.

looks like a good heavy duty charger. the rectifier was laying lose being held only by the wires. might have been cliped on the bigger heat sink? pluged in and smoked it this gave power to the 12v dc cooling fans. I insalled a older 110 fan and made it work. poor job on the rectifer. they changed from 110v to the 12 v fans because it was cheaper. after this I hope it last as long as my old 30 year charger.

Charged 2 volvos and they both started with no problem. Many new vehicles are challenged when you try to put a strong charge in to the system.

Trickle charging is best and works much better for most cars. A great value that will pay for itself over time.

Not the fanciest with the most options and functions, just a basic workhorse. I have plenty of multimeters and state of charge meters. I use it to start an Isuzu diesel box truck so I can move it around. The batteries onboard are several years past usefulness, but this charger will put enough charge in them after twenty five minutes to start the truck easily, even in the winter cold. Only had it for a month or so, but would buy another if I needed one.
