After having the battery on my "summer only" convertible go

flat last winter I decided to invest in a battery maintainer.

The Schumacher SEM-1652A was the best compromise of price (around

$40 with shipping), features (a normal charging rate, and a

lower maintaining rate, with overcharge protection and indicator

lights), and small size (fits easily under the hood by the

master cylinder, battery wiring adaptor with quick connect makes installation and removal a snap.

I'd add a few extra crimp-on terminals of various ring sizes to the kit,

so different power connections with the wiring adaptor could be made

(my car has the battery mounted in the front fender well, I had to get

larger ring terminals to go on the remote jump starting terminals

under the hood.

Update: I bought a wattmeter to measure the power use of a fridge ( seemed to be running more than

normal, we replaced it with an energy star rated model ) so I hooked up the Schumacher maintainer

to the meter to see what it drew when it was trickle charging / maintaining. Charging was .25 amps or about

30 watts per hour, and maintaining was .11 amps or about 13 watts per hour. Pretty low energy use in my book.

I see a lot of negative reviews for this charger that I think are partially due to Amazon's incorrect description and the fact that most people don't know what size or type of charger they need. (including myself)

I am a practicing Electronic engineer with more than 20yrs experience. I did not know much about battery chargers until recently researching what a good battery charger should do.

1) this charger only delivers a max of 1.5A. This means if you try to charge a discharged auto battery (48AH) it will take a long long time. This charger does work great for topping off a car battery at 70% (12.4V).

2) The instructions included clearly state the charger will automatically shut-off after 12 hours of charging. The charger will restart and continue charging if you unplug and then plug the charger in again. Best to get a higher capacity charger.

3) This charger does have a float mode sort of. Actually it shuts off the charging current and monitors battery voltage. When the battery voltage drops low enough the charger cycles on to top it off and then shuts off again.

MY SUMMARY 1st:

I like this charger and think it does a good job for the PRICE. Gold box special was $15.20 + tax. (I would definitely buy it at the regular price for $3$)

It's basically automatic. Don't have to set the voltage and it won't damage anything if you reverse the clips accidently. Compact size and reasonable quality clamps.

This charger does what it is designed for. That is charge small batteries and top off larger automotive batteries. This is an excellent maintenance charger for all batteries to keep them fully charged when not in use. (My opinion)

Personally I would not leave any charger connected to my battery for more than 24 hours. Now I use a cheap mechanical timer that is set to turn on for 1 hour every 24 hours. I would prefer a timer that I can set to turn on twice a week for a few hours.

The charger is small feels solidly built with heavy plastic. It gets very warm after

charging at 1.5A but not warm enough to be concerned. (no cooling fan)

I gave this charger 5 stars because PRICE and performance is very good. Build quality is good as well.

AMAZON DESCRIPTION (Poor): is incorrect in that this charger is not intended to be used to charge a LOW (discharged) car battery. The chart in the DESCRIPTION that shows the charging times is different than the manual.. The included MANUAL has a chart that states this charger should only be used as a "top off" or maintenance charger for auto batteries. In addition the charger in charging mode automatically shuts off after 12 hours of charging. (A good safety feature in my opinion.)

Charging details:

I discharged a car/truck jump start battery pack to 12.45V or approx 75% charge.(Typical full charge is 12.65V to 12.7V. To discharge the battery I used a battery/alternator tester. I have a voltmeter attached to charger and a current meter in series with battery and battery charger negative terminal.

1) At the start of the charge, the charge current was 0.78A and then jumped to 1.52A in a few minutes.

2) After 1 hour the charge current is 1.47A. Charge voltage is 13.0V.

3) After 2 hours the charge current is 1.48A. Charge voltage is 13.25V.

4) After 3 hours the charge current is 1.43A. Charge voltage is 13.46V.

5) After 4 hours the charge current is 1.40A. Charge voltage is 13.82V.

Note: that the charge current is decreasing as the battery is approaching full charge. This design feature will prevent overheating and extend the life of your battery.

6) After 5 hours the charge current is 0.68A. Charge voltage is 14.71V.

7) After 5.5 hours the charge current is 0.35A. Charge voltage is 14.67V.

8) After 6 hours the charge current is 0.29A. Charge voltage is 14.73V.

9) After 6.5 hours the charge current is 0.24A. Charge voltage is 14.72V.

10) After 8.5 hours the charge current is 0.20A. Charge voltage is 14.73V.

11) After 10.5 hours the charge current is 0.15A. Charge voltage is 14.71V.

12) After 11.5 hours the charge is COMPLETE and the charge current has dropped to 0.0A. BATTERY voltage is 13.55V and declining. Charger is in the monitor mode. In monitor mode the charger AC power is 3W measured with a Belkin Watt meter.

Almost 12 hours seems like a long time to charge a battery and this isn't even a full capacity car battery. But, it did a good job of gently charging the battery especially when it was near full charge. The important thing to me is the charging current declined as the battery neared full charge. This prevents overcharging and truly tops off the battery to maximum capacity.

I tested the battery the next day with a battery tester and it passed well within the "good battery" full charge limits. The results were much better than the charger that came with the battery pack where it tested NEAR "weak".

Very happy with the purchase. I would buy this exact model again. Should there be any problem(s) in the future I will update this review.

This is a great charger but the same company (schumacher's battery maintainer), makes an identical product for sears, branded as diehard.

It costs the same as on amazon but comes with a 3 year warranty, not the standard 1 yr. warranty found here. Plus you don't have to deal with shipping hassles when you can just go to your local sears and pick one up or exchange if you have problems.

Honest reviews on Schumacher SEM-1562A 1.5 Amp Speed Charge Maintainer

Schumacher SEM-1562A 1.5 Amp Speed Charge Maintainer

Well worth the price...does exactly what it is suppose to do.

(Update) After using this charger less than 5 mos. to maintain my R.V., which is seldom driven, I have found that, because of the charger failing to cycle back to the charge mode properly, the battery that it was hooked to was stone dead. Now, I'll do some research to find out the annoying process of returning the charger for warranty.

(Update) I have contacted the manufacturer, Schumacher, concerning the failure of this charger but after 3 weeks, have received no response and it doesn't look like I am going to. So, I guess I'll just take the loss of making a bad choice and trash it. BTW, I am using two Chicago Electric on Board chargers, one on my Jeep and the other on my Mercury Sable. Both are giving very good service and are less expensive than the Schumacher or the Battery Tender.

Bought this charger to charge/maintain my deep cycle battery used for emergency power outages. The manual included with this charger even describes it charging deep cycle batteries and gives a charging estimate of ~36hrs. Fine for what I'm looking for. The charger repeatedly aborted the charge on my brand-new battery. Their customer service tech said it wasn't meant to charge deep cycle batteries due to the higher internal resistance. This should have been made more clear in the packaging, labelling and product description. I've lost time and money. Now I have to go buy a 'real' charger...

Update The charger was actually DOA. I returned it and replaced the charger with a new one on an auto-shop recommendation. It is working fine. Schumacher didn't want to own up to a bum charger when I called them earlier.

I am in the service business, so having a portable battery operated Grease gun is the best thing since sliced bread. In my opinion you need the best equipment to do a job right.

This grease gun was purchased for my husband to used on his semi truck, this grease gun wasn't what he had expected, its life was very short, 6 months, and it was too weak for this type of job.

This works great! Have been struggling with holding a nozzle in place while trying to hand pump a regular grease gun. The first day I greased the disc, tractor, both 4 wheelers and lawnmowers, then looked around for other things to use it on. I usually had to take a break while just doing the disc, as my hand felt like it was ready to fall off with the hand pump grease gun. The grease goes just where you want it and can always be sure it is delivering enough. Very clean and efficient. Nice case, but it will not go back in the case with a full tube of grease installed. Very portable, do not have to be hooked to an air hose, electrical cord or use a manual grease gun.

I have a 2000 26' Nomad from Skyline. It came equipped with a Magnetek model 6345 Converter/Charger. I purchased this product to: (1) Upgrade the original system from a single stage charger to a "smart" multi stage charger. Previous owner told me he had constant overcharging problems. This should do the trick. (2) I also decided to go with this 55 amp model to replace the old 45. It was a gamble since Progressive Dynamics says the 45 amp model is the correct replacement. This turned out to be the right move for me. The new DC circuit board has an extra bus on it. I intend on wiring a true sine wave inverter directly to it to supply power to my new LED TV & DirecTV HD DVR which only pulls about 250w 2amps 110v AC. I also replaced the two cheap 12v Deep Cycle Batteries with two Trojan T-105 6v Batteries wired in Series. Judging from the ease of installation, smart charging system, and price. I would have to say this product deserves 5 stars. I believe this is a new product so it may be hard to find reviews from people who have been using this product but It is more or less a combination of PD's other Converter/Charger combined with their "Charge Wizard" all packaged into a case that is the same exact size as the Magnetek 6300 series. Unless you are charging a multi bank system. I would buy this one again.

I replaced our non-working 12 volt converter with this. I did have to replace the included distribution panel but it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The charger works great and regulates the voltage to the battery for storage. I leave the trailer plugged in all the time now and it doesn't boil out the battery like the stock one would.

Took about 1 hour to install

I used this as a direct replacement of my Parallax 7355 which burned out after about 8 years of use (while camping). Directions were easy to follow, installation took about an hour or so. Very happy to see this product is manufactured in the USA. I have high expectations for this product and like that the upgraded 4-stage charging system so it won't cook the batteries while plugged in. I recommend this product for 1) features 2) ease of installation 3) great cost and features in comparison to the OE replacement unit.

I tried this after a few months and it didn't work. The phone number on their website (800-372-3815) is disconnected, and they don't answer emails. There are no other numbers available for Startmeup2 or "Automotive Energy Systems".

This product had been sitting in my car for years and when my car battery died today on the hottest day of July, it completely helped bring enough life to the battery so I could start up the car and drive to the mechanic. Great value and solid product.

I bought three of these units, one for each car. I used the first one more than a year later and it worked! I was up and running in about 5 or 10 minutes, as the unit had said. I used the second one several months later after leaving the lights on in the car it worked then too! The 3rd one was used when I helped another guy whose battery was dead. I had no need to contact the company so I can't comment on other reviewers talking about disconnected phone numbers, but from my own personal experience, they are very handy to have in a pinch. And yes, they are a 1-time use disposable unit.

Honest reviews on Auto Emergency Jump Start Battery, Start Me Up 2

I was excited to try this out, so I ordered 2 of them.

Item arrived quickly. However, it should be noted that the small charger says that it is for 1 use only. So, I am going to wait until it is absolutely necessary before trying it out. I thought that it could be used more than once (then charge it up), so next time I will read the documentation more carefully.

Exide MC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free (AGM) Marine Reviews

Exide MC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free Marine Battery
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

Received this Deep Cycle battery 2 weeks ago from Amazon. The manufacture's production date was 11/2011 and the manufacture's ship date (to Amazon?) was 12/2011 so the battery was received factory fresh. It arrive with a full charge per my multi-meter at 12.8 volts. It has 840 cranking amps at 32 degrees and 700 cranking amps at 0 degrees. It is a 100 amp hour battery with a 200 minute reserve capacity.

This battery was installed in a diesel pusher motor home as the "house" battery, which is used to power the lights, heat, water pump etc. when you are not connected to utility power or running the generator.

It is heavy (at about 72 pounds) but since it is a sealed AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery we won't have to remove it every 6 months and check the water level in it as you do regular lead acid batteries.

We also use a NOCO Genius G7200 charger (also sold through Amazon) to keep it charged since it is a "smart" charger and will not over charge the battery. We no longer use the coach's built in 12 volt converter/charger to keep the batteries charged since it will over charge the batteries and shorten their life.

Even though we have only had the battery 2 weeks, I would recommend it for 3 reasons:

1. PRICE! When shopping around for a group 31 AGM battery, our local battery store (Batteries Plus) wanted $325.00 for theirs. (To be fair, their AGM battery was a hybird with 1000+ cranking amps it is across between a deep cycle battery and a starting battery.) Other places online wanted $250.00 or more and around $50.00 shipping!

2. Exide has been making batteries for over 120 years so I think they will be around to honor their 2 year replacement warranty.

3. As an AGM battery there little maintenance (Just wipe it off every now and then). I have had an AGM battery in our full size truck for 7 years with no problems to report. Our other vehicles have had to have their batteries replaces every 2 to 3 years. The heat in Texas is hard on a battery... (From now on when we replace the batteries in our vehicles, they too will be AGM batteries.)

We plan on purchasing 2 more of these batteries when our existing engine starting batteries need to be replaced in the coach.

Hope this helps someone!

I bought this battery for my travel trailer and it passed the test on a recent 10-day trip to Yellowstone park. I had plenty of power for the whole trip without having to recharge. There was not a hint of fading power on the whole trip. My previous battery, which is only a year old, did not last this long on week-long trips. I'm happy.

Added 1/13/13 I bought a motor home and no longer use this on a trailer. I am now using it as a battery for my Minn-Kota 50 lb thrust troling motor on my 2 boats. I can also hook up my fish finder to it and have plenty of power for both. It works as a back-up for the motor home though I haven't had to use it yet.

Best Deals for Exide MC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free (AGM) Marine

I purchased two of the Exide MC-31 batteries from Amazon which were delivered in May, 2011. They were very well packaged and in excellent condition. After unpacking and inspecting the batteries, I was surprised to see that the manufacture date was May of 2010. The batteries had been in storage without charging for a full 12 months. The open circuit voltage indicated only about 75% charge, indicating that some plate sulphation must certainly have taken place by this time reducing the battery life and capacity. When I contacted Amazon their representative directed me to deal with the manufacturer. (Catch 22) The manufacturer did not supply the batteries to me directly and they were not actually defective (just old). I put the batteries into service and just hope their service life has not been shortened dramatically. When they were shipped to Amazon is not known, but selling lead acid batteries that are already a year old sounds like a huge oversite on Amazon's part. If you are considering the purchase of one of these batteries, I would suggest you contact Amazon first and inquire as to the date of manufacture.

Honest reviews on Exide MC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free (AGM) Marine

This battery is great even when not used for a boat or RV. Using a 1,500 watt inverter, Anywhere PRO Audio in Jacksonville, NC uses it to power its BOSE professional sound systems where there is no access to power. We can run our systems for up to 9 hours on a single charge! Amazing output!

The batteries came fully charged with a manufacture date of only 2 months prior to purchase! Great Product!

I was a bit worried about ordering a battery from Amazon especially after the poor review and date problem listed below but, our travel trailer battery was dead and after checking local prices (whew!) decided to give this a try.

After reading all the reviews, opted for this one and then noticed, WarehouseDeals had one available for a few bucks less. Since batteries can't be returned in general, I figured the less spent, the less risk and opted to give it a go.

When the battery arrived, my initial reaction was "uh-oh" because it was dusty and dirty. No grease or anything but lots of dust...I think there was even a shoe-print on it! I dreaded the worst thinking this thing must have been sitting around the warehouse for ages. No so! I cleaned it off a bit and saw the date being the SAME month as shipped! Wow I can't even get batteries that new locally. In fact, I can't come anywhere near this price on this battery (or similar ones) locally...the next best price was about $100 more than what I paid.

Hooked it up to see the charge...was at 92%. Charged the remainder. Works like a charm! Couldn't be more pleased by this purchase. Great battery, great price, great delivery, very fresh! Oh it was dirty as all get-out but I saved about $100 so still very pleased!

If you're not planning on spending thousands of dollars to pimp your ride, and are just looking to spend a little money to spice it up a little bit, these lights are perfect!

The lights are very bright, with several different modes to select from (flashing, racing, steady, etc.)The lights are NOT made for outside the car! They are in plastic tubes, so they will break if subjected to rough use. I put one under the dash on the drivers side, and one on the passenger side. With just those two it really lights up the interior. I also put one in the trunk, which looks really awesome when you turn it on.

Wiring is really not hard if you know what you're doing. If you don't, just look it up online, there are a lot of guides to explain it for you.

i have a set of these in my truck. i have the inside of the glove box plexiglassed with the control pad inside. the wires are a little on the short side, so youll have to add wire on your own to run anything more than 2-3 foot away from your pad. but the lights are really bright and for the price i would suggest these to everybody... i will have pics up reall soon.

Installation was a breeze, and these LEDs are great. They will light up your car to impress all, and the blue light does not distract while driving. A great product, would recommend to anyone.

Honest reviews on 4pc. Blue LED Interior Underdash Lighting Kit

First, the kit comes with no instructions whatsoever. Go to click on Tech Support, and find the instructions for your particular kit.

Second, the kit was designed assuming you want to connect to your fuse panel or directly to your car battery. They claim you can use your car cigarette lighter but as far as I can tell this requires a special adapter that isn't provided and is not sold anywhere on Amazon.

Just set these up in my white 2012 Dodge Charger, and let me tell you, I could NOT be happier!!! This really added some badass spice to the whole look of the interior! They are just about as bright as you see in the advertised pic, mine may not be "as" bright due to the location I had to set them up, but worry not, my dark garage with these LedGlow lights bumping looked like a BLUE Disco party was poppin in my car!

The wires are pretty long, but due to how the interior of my car is set-up, I had no choice but to hook-up both front LED-sticks to the bottom (fronts) of my front seats (as apposed to having them set-up above the feet under the dash as where most people seem to put them). For the passenger seat I had to wrap the wire around the back of my center console, tucking the wire in under the console where it meats the rug. It worked GREAT, NO wires to be seen at-all, anywhere! :) The other 2 LED sticks went under the back of my front seats, I used wire-ties (the kind that come with your garbage bags) for all 4 sticks, but for the 2 up front, I also used electrical tape to secure them to the metal rods I twist-tied them too.

For the 3 negative reviews on here... What in the world are these people talking about? For those who said there LedGlow stopped working after a while, it is most likely the "Fuse" within the ledglow (as has been reported by MANY already on why there LedGlow stopped working. Simply replace the fuse and bingo, they are back on!). This thing only comes with a 2-amp fuse, best bet is to replace it with an 8-amp fuse, and an 8-amp fuse should last forever with these lights. Also, one reviewer stated they are not bright enough? Really??? This guy must want some serious medical attention, because any brighter these things will start making peoples brains go into convulsive seizures while driving!!! Another review stated the lights don't blink to the music? Umm, YES they do! The lights literally have a mind of there own, they blink almost perfect with the speed of the music. For a video of this, go to YouTube and type in "LEDGLOW Blue LED interior lights", watch that Video, and that is EXACTLY how these lights look and respond to the music!

Now to the lighter set-up in which I used...

I wrote this review for the lighter adapter here on Amazon, gonna re-post it here as it literally saved me a ton of time setting everything up...

The lighter adapter took soooo much time out of the LedGlow hook-up process! I have 3 lighter plug-ins in my 2012 Dodge Charger, I used the middle plug-in inside the center console, the wires are so thin on this lighter adapter that my center console door closes no problem (with the wires coming out on the driver side, less then an inch away from the seat). I was very worried that using this adapter with wires coming out the side of my center console would look sloppy, with no way to hide them, but worry NOT! I used some electrical tape (only about 6-inches worth) down the wire and it is virtually invisible (as my entire set-up is), and not only because of using the tape, but because where the wires come out, they come out literally right next to the back of my driver seat cushion, with the cushion and the console almost pressed up against one another, I simply used the tape to keep the wires put.

Now, I did not have this hooked up long at all yet, so I don't know the reliability of this lighter adapter, but so far so good, and for only $8 bucks and possibly hours taken out of my set-up, I'm a happy camper!

BTW, my 2012 Charger is MY BABY, there is not a scratch on the thing, inside or out!!! I am VERY picky about wires being shown anywhere in my car with anything I set-up/hook-up, so this should tell ya something!

The entire set-up process took me about an hour, and this includes me figuring out how I was going to set it up, where to hide the wires, what to use to secure the light-rods,etc. Once I figured out how exactly I was going to do everything, it was literally a matter of 20-25 minutes at most to get everything in-place and where it needed to be. The set-up is so easy I can seriously can see a 10 yr old doing it no problem (now the set-up without the lighter adapter is a different story, cannot speak on that one)!

I could not be happier with this LedGlow product, it really made my ride just that more badass, and for only $32 bucks, I feel as if I stole something! lol Get em, you can thank me later! :)

I've had a chance to play around with the new Drift HD170 Stealth camera for a few weeks now and made a quick video just to show a few things I've tried with it. What makes it "stealth," I guess, is the new sleek black design (the casing of the unit is made from a durable black rubberized plastic). The bright orange face of the older model did likely call some attention to itself, and for some uses (i.e. stealth uses) that's a drawback. While the older model's bright colored face made it look fun, I think I do prefer the solid black and can see why they opted for it. The feature that makes this camera really stand out from other similar POV or "extreme sports" cameras, though, is the onboard LCD screen, that allows you to see what you are going to be capturing on the spot, so you can arrange the camera just as you like; it also allows you to go through the menu on the spot and adjust options depending on your needs at the moment. (You can set things up in the menu so that the LCD turns off after a minute of being unused so as to prolong the life of the battery).

What's struck me is that the real value of this camcorder is its combination of a rugged and durable design with its versatility. It's emphasized for use with extreme sports but it's useful pretty much anywhere you wouldn't risk another more fragile camera. It's water and weather resistant not water proof so you could use it in light rain, maybe even during a hurricane if it was securely mounted, but certainly in extreme conditions where you'd be worried about a standard camcorder. (I've heard that Drift Innovation the company that makes these will be coming out with a fully waterproof case for the Stealth some time soon so that you can add cliff diving and snorkeling to the list of extreme sports you can capture subjectively with the Stealth) The camera comes with three different mounts one that you can secure to any kind of narrow belt (and it comes with an elastic belt), one that you can put on a handlebar, and one that you can secure to a helmet with the included velcro adhesives. It's easy to orient the camera, even if you've got it mounted in an odd spot the shooting orientation can be changed simply by rotating the lens manually, and the quick release mount can also be rotated so that the unit can be oriented however you like with respect to the mount.

I'm not much of an extreme sports guy but I can see where this would come in handy for various types of video projects other than extreme sports, and I tried to illustrate a few possible uses in the video. You can mount it on a bike, a motorcycle, a skateboard, or on a 12-foot-long paint pole elevated over a car (as I did in the attached video, using the handlebar mount attached to the end of the pole). Obviously, I wouldn't want to put my Canon VIXIA HFS10 on top of a long pole like that because if it dropped or bumped into something it would almost certainly be damaged. While the Stealth is not damage proof it's a lot more rugged than a standard camera, and so it works great in lots of precarious situations. I used to think that when I needed an extreme shot the best option would be a relatively inexpensive camera like my Flip, that I could more afford to have damaged than my nicer camera but with this one the risk of serious damage is significantly diminished.

You can shoot decent photos (5 megapixels and they look fine, but as you'd expect on a device that's tailored for video capture they don't really compare to the images you'd capture on a compact camera in this price range expect a few notches up from the quality you'd capture on a phone and you won't be disappointed), and very cool time lapse sequences (with shooting intervals from 3 to 30 seconds apart), plus it takes surprisingly good HD video for such a small camera. It's not as nice or as versatile as my Canon, but the video is at least as good or better than what I can capture on my Flip Mino HD plus it's got a much wider lens, which is ideal for "point of view" shooting. At 720p it captures a 170 degree view, and it's got a bit of a fisheye effect which is kind of nice, it looks very cool with POV sports footage but could be effective in other applications as well. At 1080p it captures a slightly narrower range of 120 degrees, and there's less distortion, but not as many options for frame rates. At 720p you can shoot at frame rates from 25fps to 60, and shooting at 60fps allows you to slow the footage down in an editing program without things looking jerky as they would if you'd shot at a standard 30fps and then played back at an effective 15 frames per second. At 1080p you can shoot either 25 or 30fps. (You can also shoot standard definition video if you like). The video is encoded with H.264 in a Quicktime (.mov) wrapper so it's easy to import and play or edit in a variety of applications.

One other nice feature is that the set comes with a remote control "watch" you can wear it on your wrist (it's got a velcro band) and it has two buttons: for record and stop. There's a bit of a time lag on the stop function it takes a couple seconds and sometimes I've found I've had to press the button twice to get it to respond, but otherwise it works quite well. The weak element on the camera is the onboard mike it doesn't capture clear sound at all. It's noisy and would really only work as reference and not playback. In other words if you spoke into the mike or near the mike you would be able to hear what you'd said assuming you weren't on a motorcycle, or free falling from high altitudes and it might help you to remember something but you wouldn't want to even consider including the audio in a completed video. The main reason for the weakness of the mike seems to be that its input is protected by a rubber seal in order to ensure the water resistance of the unit. The real value of this camera is in capturing video you wouldn't be able (or willing) to capture in other ways. There is another option with this camera that not all cameras of this type allow, which is to plug in an external microphone but I'm pretty sure the input is proprietary, which means you either have to buy the mike from Drift or you have to buy one of the input cables for your mike from them. When you do use an external mike you have to keep the rear hatch of the camera open and Drift sells a kind of silicon boot to help keep things sealed and protected when the mike is connected and the door is open.

The Stealth is not a one-size-fits-all camcorder that will meet every need and wouldn't by any stretch replace a standard camcorder for ordinary shooting, especially given its fixed, extremely wide lens and its substandard onboard mike but it can capture images you'd never dream of trying to capture with your standard camcorder. If all you want to do is capture extreme sports from the point of view of the athlete, or other extreme images that would put an ordinary camera at risk, this would be a very good option. For someone like me, who only rarely has a need for "extreme sports footage," I know I won't use this all the time, but I'm very happy to have it in my "bag of tricks" because, as I think my little video shows, it's a very versatile camera that can capture some very cool and fairly good quality images and video that could fit nicely into a wide range of different kinds of video projects.

I've owned just about every helmet cam on the market and I even sell the GoPro HD Hero on my site and this is by far the best camera I've owned to date.

The thing I like about it most is the ease of use. The menu is like any other PAS camera instead of hieroglyphics like the GoPro and yes I have the LCD on my GoPro and it's still a pain to use. It does take great video but no better than the drift.

I love that I can adjust the mic on the drift and pretty much turn it off if I want to and I can add a remote mic. I have one but have yet to use it. No more clanking from the mount like the GoPro either.

The battery outlast the GoPro and it seems to have great video compression. Long videos have pretty small file size. I took a 48:00 video and it was just under 3 gig.

About the only thing I don't care for is the helmet mount. I haven't used it yet but it's not that clean of a mount, I do like the GoPro better for that. I wound up putting a RAM ball on mine and that's pretty much all I use. All and all I love this thing.

Camera arrived and straight out of the box had a faulty microphone. Had a play with it for a few days waiting to hear back from Drift Support and found the picture quality to be excellent. Really liked the good clear images and colour was spot on. Although, I soon found that a fully charged battery would drain overnight if left in the camera (even though the camera was switched off).

Thinking I just had a dud unit, and given the quality of picture, I decided to go through the Amazon returns process and had a replacement shipped out.

Amazon were excellent in how they dealt with the return and replacement. No complaints on that front (Drift on the other hand, took more than a week for their Support people to reply to my emails to tell me that it was faulty and then they passed the buck back to Amazon).

Replacement unit arrived today and upon switching it on I notice the picture is absolutely stuffed, making everything look like a psychedelic music video from the 70's. Back to emailing Drift Support. This time I won't wait for a week for their response. If I haven't heard back by tomorrow it's on it's way back for a refund this time.

You really have to ask yourself where is the quality control? Does Drift not test each unit before it's packaged?

Two cameras and two different problems straight out of the box.

It's disappointing because the Drift is the only one of the top 3 (GoPro/Contour/Drift) that offers external mic and reviewing screen facility.

I won't risk another replacement.

Looks like I'll be switching my allegiance to one of the other two brands.

UPDATE: Received a GoPro HD this week and most impressed with the quality of build and the video taken to date. The mounting system is a little fiddly but not entirely unusable. Changing camera settings was awkward at first but after clipping on the LCD BacPac it was much more simple.

I've just bought a Contour HD as well ($138) and will test that out when it arrives.

Honest reviews on Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth Action Camera with HD Recording, 4x

I did my research on Go-Pro, Contour and Drift Hd170. What sold me to get the Drift HD170 was a couple of things.

1-PRICE

2-LCD Display

3-Remote Control

4-Water Resistant

5-The use of a standard size SDHC flash memory card

6-FULL HD 1080P option

7-Has a universal screw mount on the bottom for tripods.

8-All the necessary attachments I needed to PLAY is included on the package! With the exception of the waterproof casing. OVERALL I AM PRETTY STOKED!!

So as I compared each product, this was the winner. I can rig it when I climb. Once I have the funds, I am going to purchase a waterproof case so that I can use it for surfing.

The setup menu options are pretty easy. Very user friendly, well at least to me :)

I just wished that the zoom capability worked for the HD 1080p settings.

Here's a link to my videos that I did using the Drift HD170 strapped on my climbing helmet. So far I am super stoked on it!!

UPDATE:

Well for some odd reason Amazon is not letting me post a link on my vimeo videos for you to view.

You can check it out by typing on the address line vimeo then typing the (.) then the com w/ the backslash (/) then luvlifeclimbsurf. vimeo(dot)com(/)luvlifesurfclimb

Wanting to document my snowboarding from a POV standpoint gave me a craving for a compact video camera, but which one? The most common video cameras I've seen on the mountain are the Go-Pro, followed by the Contour. The ungainly/delicate appearance of the Go Pro atop a helmet was enough to dissuade me from that particular brand (not to mention the price). On the other hand, the Contour's side-mounted, tubular design offered a more desirable low profile that seemed better suited for my tastes. Researching the Contour led me to discover the Drift HD170 and I found myself spending a great deal of time debating on which of these two cameras to choose. A combination of price and features led me to opt for the Drift HD170. While there are some issues with the Drift camera, I feel satisfied that the right choice was made.

The camera comes with a lot of stuff: several mounting devices (handlebar, head, goggle and helmet), rechargeable battery, USB cable (that allows charging the camera by computer) and a remote control. As with most cameras today, a separate memory card needs to be purchased. While I settled on a 16GB card, the Drift HD170 can handle a 32GB card (SD and SDHC). With options of 1080p and 720p, one may also see the need for more computer storage capacity. Other, not so cheap, add-ons are available for the DRIFT (longer-life battery, external microphone, underwater case, etc.), but I felt the silicon cover protecting the door that houses the battery, computer connection and memory card was the only essential add-on for my needs. My camera arrived the day before a snowboard trip so there was an eagerness to quickly get it ready for use. Opening the box, I was initially a little taken-back by the camera's size, it is little bigger in person. But this initial shock dissipated after holding the camera and feeling the "grippable" rubberized protective casing and how light it was. With everything provided, setup only required inserting the battery, sliding in the memory card and charging the camera. Attaching it to my goggles with the goggle strap mount (the goggles were wrapped around a helmet), I hit the slopes with my new DRIFT HD170 the following morning and came up with the following conclusions at day's end:

Positives...

+ Rugged camera housing ... rubber coating offers a decent amount of non-submersible water resistance and allows user to securely hand-hold the camera if necessary. The camera is lightweight and has a fairly low profile.

+ The video display ... a unique feature that separates the DRIFT HD170 from the other cameras ... you can actually see/replay what you record (lets you know instantly whether or not you've got the footage you want ... rather than being disappointed later). While the display is small, the picture quality is superb. However, the small screen size didn't help me identify an orientation issue I discovered later.

+ Ease of use ... 4 buttons: menu, up, down and record/play. Once you slide the battery and memory card in the slots, the camera is ready to go.

+ Rotation of camera lens allows option of wider, more panoramic POV filming. The fish-eye lens is subtly effective and not distorted.

+ Excellent video quality up to 1080p and 60fps. My setting of 720p/60fps was perfect for conserving space on the memory while not sacrificing video quality. Additionally, there is a 4x zoom feature and slow motion videos can be made with this camera.

+ The camera comes with a multitude of mounting options and is unique in that it has a remote control.

+ There is an option to take pictures (5 megapixels), but aligning up-close photos using the small video display to aim is more of a hassle. The works best on objects at a distance using the simple point-and-shoot method.

Negatives...

The documentation that accompanies the camera is minimal ... a multi-lingual foldout reference sheet. The actual manual needs to be downloaded (.pdf format) from the DRIFT website. The manual is necessary to understand the actual operation of the device and it should have come with the camera.

The camera interface is a little confusing at first (how to navigate, chose and save options), but the downloaded manual provides all the answers.

The remote is a great concept, but there needs to be a visual indicator on it ... the beep that indicates the camera is recording may not be audible in noisy environments or if the wearer is using a helmet with the ears covered. It would be nice to see a red light on the remote to see whether the camera is recording or not ... a single beep isn't enough and others might be annoyed by you asking "is the red light on?" everywhere you go. The wrist-strap isn't big enough to wear the remote over gloves and a jacket.

The camera's lens orientation is confusing ... I ended up filming everything upside-down and in reverse because the lens was twisted the wrong way right out of the box. While the orientation of the videos can be corrected, it took some time and an upgrade to Quicktime Pro to get things straightened out. The manual shows a colored seam (orange or grey) running along the top of the camera housing that matches the colored seam on the twistable lens ... they seem to logically line up for orientation purposes. Unfortunately, my camera is all black with black seams on the top and bottom of the camera housing. I had to figure this out on my own as the manual only addresses the ability of the lens rotate 300 degrees. Unfortunately, I am going to have to either paint the seam or mark the camera so I can quickly align it by sight.

The goggle clip is simply ... bad. Two minor (soft) spills (on my backside and with no contact to my head or helmet) resulted in two instances of the clip (with the camera) popping off the goggle strap. The first time, everything landed in my field of view, so I knew what happened. The second time it did not and I didn't realize the camera was gone until I got back on the lift and felt its absence after feeling the side of my helmet. Fortunately for me, it was early in the morning, only a few people were on the slopes and the lift back to the mountaintop paralleled the slope I just ran. I was able to visually trace my path from the lift chair and locate the disturbed area where I fell. Lucky me, I did spot the camera from the lift and was fortunate enough to get to it (before someone else did). The downside was only feeling comfortable holding the camera in my hand for future filming that day. I will not use the camera on my goggle strap again unless I rig something to ensure it's secure (ironically, the manual merely says "give it a tug" to ensure it is securely in place). I am also going to have to design some sort of leash for the camera so it stays attached to me regardless ... I was extremely fortunate that I retrieved my camera off the slope that day.

Issues with the mounting mechanisms (the poor goggle clip was enough of a reason to not trust the other clip mounts although the handlebar mount looks pretty stable/sturdy) is my only serious gripe. Losing the camera on the first day it's used would be horrible. Otherwise, I simply love every aspect of this camera. Even when I was in the chair lift, feeling devastated that I might have lost the camera, I was still contemplating whether I could/should afford buying a replacement. The videos I took turned out better than expected at 720p and I am looking forward to using it for other things (like strapping it to one of my Yellow Labs that can get some serious air fetching Frisbee Rings). No, I will not likely feel comfortable using any of the other mounts and will resort to my own mounting method for peace of mind. Overall, the DRIFT HD170 is a great value and I believe I chose the best camera for my needs and my budget.

I received this as a gift and I have to say this is prob the best gift I ever received. I bought a used car a year ago and after I bought it I realized that where they installed the cd player they had to take out the cigarette lighter/car charging station. You wouldn't think you'd need this for so much. I couldn't use my GPS for long trips, if my cell died I had to wait till I got home, and my MP3 player was a big no-no since it used a lot of battery life. This little thing charges all of that plus my childrens 3ds and PSP. I even use it in my house to save on the electric bill. It might not be a big money saver but it does help and I figure if I'm ever lost or stuck on a deserted island my MP3 player will always be charged.

After buying this Solair unit, I was excited because I thought this would be a cool way to stay on the move while in the outdoors without giving up a cell phone charge. I followed the instruction manual's guidance to charge it first fully from USB. The next day, the lights indicated a full charge. I took it to work with me. A few hours later, my Samsung Galaxy S3 was down to 85%, I plugged it into the phone, and it failed to charge. Tried the on/off switch. Tried both USB ports. Even tried playing with the variable voltages, even though I know a USB should be a 5v signal. Nothing worked. The phone indicated it was charging when 5v was selected, but the battery % continued to decline down to 79%. I conclude that the battery is unable to provide a full charge to the phone. I just packed it back up and sent it back for a refund. I don't like struggling with or wasting time on devices to get them to do what they were designed to, and see no need to test customer service or attempt exchanges.

I moved on and am testing a Joos Orange. I haven't had it long enough for feedback yet, but in an initial comparison of the two, the Joos is larger in length and width though a bit smaller in height and would be a bit more awkward to pack. It's a bit heavier, too. I liked the Solair's compactness and ability to fold in half, which protects the solar panel and makes it an easier panel to pack and lighter to carry. You could put the portable charger in your back pocket. However, it felt much less robust than the Joos. Seems like the Joos is sturdy enough to take a beating The Solair does not seem waterproof, which I was surprised to find that the Joos is. To me, using a solar panel in a place where it might rain is a must. The Joos can be left outside even if it is going to rain without worry. The LED light on the side of the Solair is a bit gimmicky, as I can afford nicer LED flashlights. The carrying cases are both nice, but the Solair's case was specifically designed to carry the complete array of tips with nice little elastic retaining straps. The Joos case is also sturdy and appropriately designed to protect the solar panel, but it would be a bit nicer if there were a pouch to hold all the tips. The quality control of the Joos is questionable. One of the finger tightening screws for the reflective pack had no threads. Also, the battery was disconnected, but it shouldn't have been according to its user manual. 8 screws on the back panel provided access to the 5400mAh lithium battery. It should be noted that the Solair only had a 2000 mAh battery, which is disappointing considering my phone's battery is actually larger at 2100mAh. The Joos should be able to charge my phone fully and even a friend's overnight. I'm not happy with the Joos proprietary tips which would not be quickly and easily replaced if lost, and its micro USB port is an inherently fragile design. However, I'm already happier with the Joos because it definitely works. While I typed and refined this review over the last 30-40 minutes, I charged my phone from 14% to 53%. Finally, though I'm definitely happier with the Joos so far, I guess I should be considering it's currently about 3 times the price on Amazon: $50 vs. $150.
