My Kargo Kooler arrived damaged in a dented box without any interior packing materials. The lid doors were warped and a little loose, a screw was missing from a hinge, the cheap plastic lid latch did not work properly, and I could not use this cooler vertically as a "refrigerator" because the heavy bottom door sagged badly. Perhaps attaching the heavy cooling unit to a lid door is a design flaw of this model.

The Kargo Kooler arrived a day before a 1600-mile road trip: I tested it en route to the Deep South in April as a chest cooler for exotic cheeses and a frozen pork roast, plugged into a socket in the cargo area of my Subaru Forester. I also splurged for the the optional AC adapter so I could plug it in at hotels. It cooled things superbly, despite lid problems. Yes, it may be a bit noisy in quiet office/home environments, but I did not notice its hum above road noise or the loud blasts of heating/cooling in highway hotel rooms.

My unit was obviously damaged from shipping, so I'm returning it to Amazon for a refund. Just check the lid covers and hinges very closely for damage and/or defects if you order this item.

I liked this enough to give Koolatron a second chance: I just ordered Koolatron's slightly smaller rolling mini-fridge model which may better suit my needs, has an adjustable thermostat, and should tuck away nicely and discreetly under the cargo area blind of my Subaru.

I got this as a sort of "extra" frig for drinks in the summer. However, it freezes up easily and can't be adjusted for temperature. It is lightweight and portable, working well for a drink chest for parties.

Also, the plug in that comes with it was missing. It only plugs into a car outlet--I had to buy the adapter to use it in the house.

Given the choice, I'd probably go with a small refrig that adjusts temperature. However, again, I like the portability of this product.

Used this on my road trip, it did great keeping all my food and drinks cold. Even when driving through the hot desert of 90 degree weather, it did cool down below 40 degrees from outside temperature, so it was 50 degrees inside cooler for our food. Warmer does great, can use up to 4 hrs maximum. Either cooler or warmer, plug into 12v lighter when car is running or will drain your car battery. It stays cool when at picnic and cannot plug cooler in.

Only concern is when fans running, its loud inside the car. When driving the road noise blends it out. After awhile you don't even think about it. Not too bulky in the backseat. Easily used seat belts to help hold it down when driving, such as around corners. Greatly recommend this cooler/warmer. My friend had a different brand and didn't work well. This one is a great portable fridge. Plus bought adapter from Amazon.com to use at hotel rooms, plug right in to wall outlet.

The hinge on the door was broken on arrival even though the packaging was not damaged. It seems like the double door concept with the heavy cooler mechanism on the door put a lot of stress on the plastic hinge. Good concept, but poor execution. I had to return it before we could even turn it on....

The concept of this Soladec Hybrid All-in-One Portable Solar Power Charger (SD4000LP) is good. Essentially, it is a battery-powered USB charger sized like a typical 7-inch tablet. Its internal Lithium-ion rechargeable battery can be recharged either using the solar panel, or through external USB power port. Once charged, you can then use this unit as a portable charger for other USB-powered devices. The unit also features a powerful 6-LED flood light.

Since I'm an engineer, I just HAVE to open the case to see what's inside. I'm quite impressed by the high-quality components found (see the photo I uploaded to 'Customer Images' section):

The internal Lithium-ion rechargeable battery is rated 3.7V 4100mAh (the product description says '4000mAh')

The LEDs are mounted on an aluminum-backed PCB. This is great for thermal dissipation (but you don't see this very often due to high cost)

The battery charging/discharging operation is controlled by an 8-bit microprocessor (again, you don't see this often due to high cost). This is very important because, without the correct charging algorithm, a Li-ion battery can be easily damaged by over-charging.

I then tested the unit electrically, and found it to work more or less as expected:

When you recharge the internal battery through a computer USB port, the charging current is at 500mA. This is limited by the current capacity of a standard USB port. So the charge time is around 8-9 hours.

When charging through an external 5V 1A USB power adapter, the battery charging current increases to 0.69A. That means the charge time is reduced to around 6-7 hours.

When charging with the solar panel, the highest charging current I can get is ~350mA. This is under optimal test condition of bright summer sun at noon time, with the panel perpendicular to the sunbeam. In real life, it will take at least two full days of direct sunlight to recharge the internal battery. Also note that if you place the solar panel inside your car, the charging current is cut by half because the car window filters out most of the UV light.

Next, I tried to use this Soladec unit to recharge different types of USB-powered devices. The outcome varies according to the power requirement:

When charging a low-drain USB device (such as the Philips GoGear Aria MP3 Player), the USB device is powered up correctly, but the Soladec's LED indicator light does not cycle to show 'charging in progress'

When charging a medium-drain USB device (such as the Nintendo DSi XL), the device is powered up correctly, and the Soladec's LED indicator cycles to show charging in progress.

When powering a high-drain USB device (such as the VIZIO 8-Inch Tablet VTAB1008), the Soladec's LED indicator still cycles normally, but its output current fluctuates wildly because the maximum current limit is exceeded. This may cause the receiving device to get confused as it constantly enters and then exits charging mode. Actual maximum output current I measured is around 0.81A, even though the product manual says only 0.5A. So at least the product is performing better than specified.

When ON, the LED light draws 200mA from the battery. This means a runtime of 20 hours. However, I'm skeptical about the advertised light output of '170 lumen', as it requires an amazing efficacy of over 200 lumens per watt.

On the other hand, I have noticed some major design flaws with this Solardec charger:

1. There is no on/off switch. The push button switch beside the LED light does not turn off the whole system, only the light. The system is constantly drawing a 3mA standby current from internal battery. Simple calculation shows that this standby current will drain a 4100mAh battery in less than 2 months. So although the product description says the built-in battery will "hold a charge for up to 2 years", in real life you have to recharge it every single month, if you intend to use it in case of emergency.

2. The case is not weather-sealed in any way. In particular, there are no rubber caps for the two USB ports on top. So if it rains, water can easily get in through those openings. That makes it dangerous to leave this solar charger outdoor exposed to direct sunlight. The only safe way is to place it underneath your car's windshield. But doing so also cuts down the solar power by ~50%. So now it takes 4 days to fully recharge the internal battery by solar panel.

CONCLUSION:

The Soladec SD4000LP is a good attempt with quality components inside. But unfortunately, the two major design flaws mentioned above make it less useful either as an emergency power source or as an outdoor solar charger. It does work well as a LED work light, but that can hardly justify its high price tag. That's why I can only give it a 3-star neutral rating, meaning "It's Okay".

[Side note on capacity]

Is the capacity of internal battery (4100mAh) sufficient for you? That depends on the USB device you intend to recharge. For example, my POLAROID 7" INTERNET TABLET has an internal 3000mAh Li-ion battery. So on first glance, the SD4000LP contains more than enough energy to charge up my tablet from empty to 100%. However, the battery charging process has to go though two conversion steps. First, the 3.7V from internal battery is boosted to 5V at the USB port. Next, the 5V is stepped down to around 4V to recharge the tablet battery. Even if each conversion step is 85% efficient, you still lose 30% of energy in the process. That's why you always need 1/3 higher capacity than the device you want to recharge.

The biggest problem I found with solar chargers is they never get your phone past 50%, this is the only charger I have found that will take it to 100% in the same amount of time as a wall charger. The battery in the solar unit takes 7 hours to charge plugged in and 12 hours to charge using solar, and it never has any problems keeping up with any of my devises.

I'm a hiker and I'll use the GPS on my iPhone 4S to navigate through to wood in the Sierras, and for all of you iPhone 4S users out there you know how short the battery life can be, it actually drops off on average a percent a minute so I needed a heavy duty solar charger. Even with the high power consumption, as long as I stay plugged in my phone never drops below 100%, even at night when I'm using the GPS and the rediculiously bright light all nigh long. The light is also amazing, from a 12 hour charge it will run 18 hours and will stay bright the entire night. So to sum it all up, I actually couldn't pull more power than it could put out, it always felt like there was a wall outlet in my tent becouse no matter what I did I couldn't kill the thing! It was well worth every penny spent

I violated my rule, which is "Never purchase a product or deal with a company that does not provide a phone number for Support."

After spending $80 to $90 on this, it lasted a little over 1 month. It was beyond the Amazon return period, so I couldn't return it. It is now the classic "brick." My only option is to deal with the company, which is in Korea no locations in the U.S. and no phone numbers in the U.S.

It worked great while it lasted, but I was shocked that a product which has no moving parts would die after approximately 40 days. The quality of work on the solar charger was apparently sub-par; and I will just have to eat it. The company should be ashamed of itself.

I will be more careful and not do this again. My recommendation to persons considering this product is to consider that this is not a company with a U.S. address or even a phone number. Thus, a 1-year "warranty" is actually worthless just like this charger.

Don't buy it . . . or caveat emptor Let the buyer beware!

I've got a couple of these maintainers. They are a great way to keep batteries charged up for months at a time. I got one at Northern Tool (chinese knockoff brand) that seemed to work ok until it died. I like this one better since its got a bit more power than a battery tender jr and it seems to work just as well. I've got a couple now. This ones going on a emergency jump box I use when my truck won't start.

Have owned this now for many months. Use it to charge various batteries: deep cycle trolling motor, motorcycle, marine, auto. It took two old marine batteries I thought were dead and brought them back up to over 12 volts. Indeed this season the Optima battery in my boat went bad and it was on a charge maintainer for boats. I am using one of the marine batteries that is 5 years old this charger recharged as its replacement with no issues. It has not brought the Optima battery back; not sure about that brand of battery anymore as it died just after the three year warranty. Uncanny. This is also very easy to use by my kids, and around batteries that is paramount. Was concerned about longevity, but it is holding up just fine for now.

As others have noted, the percent-charged reading can be grossly misleading. My experience is that when it shows 100%, you can expect to continue charging for another couple of hours before reaching full charge. Other than that, this charger works well. The biggest consideration with this product, however, is life expectancy. While this charger comes with a five year warranty, you are unlikely to get anywhere near that before it dies. This has been my experience with several Schumacher battery chargers. Unfortunately, there is almost nothing in the way of comparable items by other makers to choose from.

As my title states, this charger handles all four main types of large batteries: Lead Acid Auto Starter batteries, Deep Cycle Marine, AGM and Gel Cell. You select battery type and size and it takes care of the rest. When you first hook up the clips to the battery and plug in the charger, selecting battery type, it tests the battery and gives you the volts available as well as the percentage that battery is currently charged! Many times I've wanted to know that. You then select battery size and it starts charging. If you select 15 or 10 amps, when the battery is fully charged it goes into a maintenance mode automatically! You can leave the charger running forever and it won't over charge the battery. Also if your battery is damaged by sulfide build up, it detects that and runs a cycle to clean the battery and give it life again if it can. Wow. I wonder how many batteries I've replaced that could have been revived or kept alive by this charger?! This is going to save me a lot of money.

I purchased a new 850 cc amp deep cycle battery to use as an emergency power source for my amateur radio equipment (I'm a net control storm spotter for the National Weather Service Skywarn network). This brand new battery tested at 95% charged so I fully charged it (while using the radio) and it worked fine. Charged up to 100% and went into maintenance mode automatically. Took the charger to the farm and connected it to a dead tractor battery. Showed 11% charged and began building the charge immediately. Was up to 15% in about 7 minutes when I had to leave. I'll have to update this review later to let you know if it was able to salvage that poor battery.

I know of no other chargers that test the battery, charge all types of batteries and can safely be left on to maintain them as well. Go check out the cost of Gel Cell battery chargers and you'll find this is a deal.

BTW, if you forget to turn it from 'test' to 'charge', after 10 minutes or so this charger will automatically charge up the battery and keep it maintained for you! How easy is that?

So I purchased a Optima battery and I wanted a AGM compatible charger, so I purchased this. It did charge up a brand new Optima cell on the AGM mode, but here's the bad before the good, because there is simply more of it.

CONS: It does not shut off after charging. After fully charging a BRAND NEW Optima battery on the 10 amp AGM setting my 120 volt watt meter (kill-a-watt) indicated this thing was still drawing 77 watts after the 100% full and green charge light lit up.

I thought it may be a glitch so I reset everything, drained the Optima to 90% capacity and set the charger to the lowest 2 amp trickle charger mode( it says trickle right on the control panel of the machine). The watt meter indicated that the charger was consuming 60 watts! I consulted the instruction manual where it reiterates that the 2 amp mode is for maintenance and small motorcycle batteries so I shrugged it off as a inefficient charger and I come back 8 hours later to see that it had finished at 100% and that the charger was still dumping in 60 watts into the battery. I felt the battery and it was HOT!!! The whole 800 CCA Optima battery is at about 110 degrees Fahrenheit and is probably now ruined! I am not too happy with the charger so I placed a order for a Battery MINDer charger.

Now for the PROS:

It did charge the batteries, including a few small lawn tractor batteries that I had written off as heavily sulfated and they would not take a charge. My computerized battery tester indicated full capacity after charging and 24 hours later still indicated full charge showing very good results.

Summary:

While I wanted a "hands off" unattended charger that would not overcharge my batteries, I did not achieve that with this, but this still does charge better than my last Schumacher and it weights less than 5 pounds :o)

I bought this charger to replace a 15yr. old manual charger that finally gave up the ghost. All I can say is that chargers have come a long way over the last decade and a half. This charger was about 1/3 the price of the one it replaced. It's easy to use and does a great job. I would prefer metal construction rather than the plastic, but given the price, that's a minor complaint. The fan is a bit loud, but I don't sleep in my garage so I don't see that as an issue either.

I've used this charger several times. Most recently to revive the battery in my wife's mini van. It was drained to less than 6v when my kids left the interior lights on. In the past, this would have been a death sentence for the battery, but the SSC-1500A was able to recharge it without any problems. It's been over 2 months and her car starts just fine. Considering it's winter in Alaska, that's no small feet for a battery that was drained as far as her's was.

The SSC-1500A was also able to breathe new life into a portable jump start battery that had recently started refusing to accept more than a 50% charge with it's included wall wart. I hooked the SSC-1500A's clamps to the portable batteries clamps, started the charge and left it overnight. The next morning the portable battery was back to full capacity.

I'll say it again, great charger for the price.

I have a classic car and do not have electricity (or solar) access where it is stored. I've been using this charger with it for two years now off and on. I would not call myself a battery expert by any means, but I thought it might be helpful to others to share my experiences.

If you have a new battery on a late model car, this is a great charger to have handy in case you run it down (leave the headlights on, whatever). This is probably it's main area of usefulness. It's once you cross the threshold to weak or discharged batteries, or batteries left in old cars, that this unit starts to fall down on the job.

First the pros:

-Fully charges a discharged battery reasonably quickly

-Choose between different amp ratings for recharging, permits you to "trickle charge" or max it out at 15 amps

-Light weight, small size means it'll fit in the trunk quite nicely

-Cable storage built into the box

-Has some rudimentary testing capabilities and can display limited information on the LCD display about battery condition

-Estimates the percentage charged

-Both recharges and maintains batteries once charged

Then the cons:

-Battery testing features are not reliable/accurate. I've had this tester report that a battery was bad when it wasn't and, at other times, report that it was fine when a whole cell was dead. Both cases were tested on a much fancier (think >$1k) battery tester and cycler. I was charging the batteries up just to see if I could get the old car out and going after a 3 month rest.

-Very particular about battery connections. If the readout suggests a battery fault, don't trust it. Disconnect and reconnect the cables to the battery to make sure they're seated properly and try again. The alligator clamps can be clipped on to what appears to be the exact same location but give two different readings back to back.

-Yes, alligator clips. That's all you get. There are no other included connectors, and you can't swap them out for your own. Same for the power cord. What this means is that you'll need an extension cord as well, which is not a big deal, but be aware of this going in.

-Charge percentage readout is deceiving. Don't rely on it at all. It will read out 100% charged, but if you disconnect and reconnect the cables to the same battery, within seconds (to move the charger or cables), the charge percentage can drop as low as 45%. If it were 100% down to 95% or so, that would be perhaps within the range of expectation, but not over a 50% drop. This is particularly difficult to believe when the unit then proceeds to charge on up from that low percentage for another hour or so, steadily climbing towards 100% again.

I think for the money, it's a decent charger. Certainly a step up from the old school transformer ones. However, it smacks of cheapness, which fits, considering it's the model sold in WalMart. It serves well as an occasional rescue charger.

My recommendation for anyone serious about battery maintenance and recharging, step it up a notch and look elsewhere. Granite Digital has some nice units suitable for the garage.

This is a initial review of the Midland LXT114 [pair].

I just picked these up over the 4th of July sale Ace Hardware had. Originally selling of $14. each, they had on special with a $10. rebate by mail check each. So for a final investment I thought I could not go wrong for $4. each! They are a bit larger that the pair of Uniden [5 yrs. old] GMR 325-2's that I already own. They take the same batteries AAA x 3 as the older ones. The clip seems nice and sturdy, the battery covers are a bit tricky to get off but I'm hoping they loosen a bit with age. One nice thing is that the pre-programmed channels [22] all have freq's that match the Unidens, I was not expecting this & very happy. So now I have four radios that work togather for a total investment of about $25!!! We mostly use on family/friend outings. Hoping these are better on battery use than the Unidens, we will see. FYI the screen is NOT backlit like the photo shows. It is a light grey [unlit] with bold black numbers. Not especially helpful in low-light/night situations. I will post additional comments as we use further.

This product working very good and sounds very clear for me. For my experience I found these two Midland and Uniden brands are best over all other brands: easy to use, battery last longer, and voice sound better. My battery life last longer on this brand name in compare to AudioVox, Motorola and Cobra brand. I like very much...and I bought a pair and then 2 months later bought another pair of (Midland GXT1050VP4 36-Mile 50-Channel) with higher mile range. The radios work just fine for a short distance. The vox , auto talk works on voice activation, but be careful what you say and remember it is on, because phone rings , talking on the phone, dog barking or any other slight noise will activate it. I own a smaller theatrical lighting and sound company and find that these radios work great as crew radios. We add the behind the ear boom headset and 3 triple A batteries and we are working the show! Nice strong clip too. And the clip is removable (I carry my radio in a shirt pocket. The keys a lockable (no VOX by mistake) and the batteries last a long time. They have great range indoors in a theatre(lots of concrete and steel) and are better outside. They have GMRS capabilities (I do have a license) but we have found we didn't need the GMRS side (at least not yet). They work out great for crew as they are small and light. They do not have privacy codes but We haven't needed that feature and radios that do are fully compatible. If we are on channel 1 the other radios are on 1 0 (channel 1 privacy code zero ) and all is well. I have also found that with fewer features, the less experienced (with radios) are not intimidated as there's only a couple of things to learn (on-off and push-to-talk) and they are trained users. I have owned numerous pairs of these Midland radios (they used to be at walmart!) and have supplied them to a couple of local performance groups also. (Probaly owned 20 pairs at one point so I guess I like them alot!!)

Had this battery for about 3 months now and is still going strong, was around 69 percent when I got it and it took hours to discharge with everything running. I've been getting great battery life, the 1st 6-10% of the battery was dropping fast at first with no use but it got better over time. Even though the green light is on you need to let charge longer, over night if possible. if the first 10 percent drop fast it wasn't fully charged. The charger also comes in handy

I purchased this after my phone stopped charging with the wall charger. I was pleased to be able to have an extra battery. I was able to always have a charged battery in the phone and one on the charger. Extended? In size maybe but I didn't see a difference in battery life. If you just want to always have a charged battery for emergencies then I highly suggest this. But don't purchase for the extended battery life. The one down side was the battery requires a different back. The one included didn't fit my phone but I had ordered another battery and it also came with a back so I just used it. Also the battery says it fits other phones by HTC also. If your connector is on the bottom right side or top left side it will not fit (Evo Slide).

I had accidentally kept the light in my car on ... and it was sitting like that in garage for 3 days, so the battery was dead when I tried to start it.

Purchased this unit at target (same price), came back. This was the first time in my life to charge the battery. However, setup took only a minute. It started to charge the battery. I waited for approx 4 hours and the battery was fully charged. Disconnected and tried to start the car. Voila, started in first attempt. Saved me the hassle of calling jump start.

I cannot comment on technical details, but it worked like a charm for me for a dead car battery.

I've looked around at different chargers, and this one stands out. It offers many features of a higher priced charger for a lower price, like battery desulfation. I recently used this charger to top up my car battery, because I drive short distances which doesn't give the alternator enough time to recharge after starting. It is also convenient in the fact that the cables store in the unit, and it has a carrying handle. The manual that comes with it is very good as well, explains in depth how to use the charger and safety precautions. A nice feature is the automatic incorrect polarity detection, which makes it easy to use. It is also a nice size box to keep in the trunk. The only con is the dim display, which is pretty dim.

The product description says " features easy battery connection via clip leads, ring terminals or DC lighter plug (all included)." This is incorrect , it only has clip leads in which the gap in the clip is too large to fit the 8mm bolt head on side terminal batteries(that's why there's ring terminals NOT INCLUDED). So this will only work on some but not all of my cars.

As most of the other reviews stated, the display is dim. Infact, mine is so dim that I usually cannot see the lights or volt/amperage meter without putting a dark towel around my head head and the charger to see what it's saying. Even at night it is less than 'good'. If you are patient and good with puzzles, you can get the cords back into it's neat storage compartment. The charger itself seems to do a good job once you blindly pick the right setiings, but putting your face to the electronics and sometimes battery and engine area is dangerous. I have had this unit for about 10 months and use it for both boat and cars. It was purchased through Amazon but I can not recommend it since someone is bound to get injured trying to read the dimly lit display. How did this ever pass Duracell design approval? Oh, made in China.

I found the charger's display to be much too dim for daylight viewing. I have seen two chargers and they were both that way. It looks good in very low light or at night, but in sunlight it is just impossible to tell what is going on. Just another note be patient after you connect it to the battery as it can take over a minute for the charging process to start.

I just got this set and haven't put them on my old charger yet. They are large enough to be auto jumper cable ends and have pretty strong springs to match. The gripper teeth aren't very pointy but I think the large size and pressure from the spring should make up for that easily. A file would alter the teeth but I'm not going to go that far unless I have lots of problems,which as stated,I doubt will happen. The connection "half moons" look to be robust and there is plenty of room in the handles to add a short/small bolt and copper washer if wanted. I am confident they could outlast the charger then be reused elsewhere. They are simple and strong,,I'm very happy with all aspects of this purchase at this point.

The one I ordered works fine for charging and filling the ipod. It is compact and has no perpendicular parts so it won't get broken by being left on the floor and stepped on, like our original Apple one did.

Okay I'll be honest, I've only used it once and for 5 minutes. I own an apple computer(iMac) and when I plugged it in to it my computer and iTunes both acknowledged my shuffle and iTunes allowed me to transfer songs and what not. I'll come back and update this review if it stops working. All in all as of now I'm happy with the purchase of this super small charger. It's dirt cheap! (on a side note a seller on eBay is selling new original iPod shuffle chargers for about 9 bucks if that's what you want. Just look it up)

I bought one of these to keep in my back pack with my laptop to charge on the road or update my shuffle.
