This is a compact unit that I use to charge my cell phone and Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS using the two DC outlets, and to charge my Ipod Nano and Palm TX using the two USB outlets. I purchased a DC outlet extension cord at Radio Shack, and plug the charger into this so that I can position the charger right next to my seat.

I have tried various other chargers, and this is the most convenient one that I have found. In addition, the charger's capacity is sufficient to handle all of my gadgets being charged simultaneously.

Update July 22, 2009: Some months ago I replaced my Palm TX with an iPod Touch 2G. This unit charges it just fine using the same USB cable that I use to charge the Touch on my laptop.

Update August 23, 2009: I now charge my new BlackBerry Tour on this unit.

Update October 10, 2010: I just ordered my third unit--not because I had a problem with the other two, but because I wanted one for each car. Three years later my original unit is working just fine, as is the secind unit that I purchased a year after that. This is definitely a quality product that has performed well and held up well.

Update December 3, 2010: I just received my fourth unit that I am giving to one of my children to use in their car. This is a quality unit, and I have not had any problems with any of the units that I have bought.

Update August 1, 2012: Still using all four units without any problems. I have inserted a Powergen USB car charger into one of the 12V sockets, so now I have 4 USB ports--which I need for an iPad 3, two iPhones 4S, and a Kindle 3.

Update August 18, 2013: Still using with no problems. We had some brutally hot days this summer where the temperature inside my parked car was easily over 100 degrees. No effect at all on this unit.

This device is really helpful not just for road warriors, but the average person who may have quite a number of devices that can be powered/charged by USB. It can handle and is fused at 20 amps.

I have two. On is 8 months old, the other about four months. You do not need to direct wire, but it is easy and in both my vehicles they are directly wired. One went to the front cigarette lighter wiring (about a 10 minute install) meaning I have a net of three cigarette lighter 12v outlets, plus two USB limited to 15 amps of the supporting OEM cigarette lighter fuse. In my second vehicle I have it direct wired to the battery main bus with an inline fuse (from an inexpensive $20 car amplifier power supply wiring kit). That was about 40 minute install. They can support a high powered laptop, treo, navigation unit, dvd player for the kids in back, and also charge an ipod or bluetooth set -all concurrently. It is also not difficult to open up the device and and use the 5v leg to run a direct 5v usb for hardwiring nav units.

The USB 5 volts is pretty clean and accurate checking with load on car start I am getting 5.1v and it settles at 4.95v, all well within tolerances for any usb device.

this is exactly what any blackberry, ipodding tuning road-warrior needs. dual 12v and 5v usb...genius.

my only hitch is that it takes a few seconds to buffer the power to the USB ports. My blackberry 7130e didnt start charging until a few seconds after the charger was plugged in. It works so im not concerned.

the usb ports have enough power to charge any USB device you can throw at it. I used this to supplement a high-speed portable hard drive that needed more power than my ultra portable laptop could supply it. so one plug went to PC usb for data and the other went to this baby and i was mint.

Love the mounting equipment. velcro or screw mount..your choice!

Cables and construction are solid and wire is heavy guage so it wont over heat under high load.

This unit would not charge my Nokia n900 using its USB outputs, until I modified it. But then, neither would at least three other dumb USB chargers I had on hand. Finally, I searched the net for n900 charging issues, and found that the n900 expects the charger to behave as the USB specification for dumb chargers reads, and many don't. Specifically, it expects to see 200 ohms resistance between the D+ and Dpins (the two center pins) and this unit appears to have an open circuit there. It seems that many phones, specifically some iPhone and Blackberry units, do not conform to the USB spec either, and expect to see around 2 volts on D+ which this unit provides.

So, if your phone will charge when connected to a computer, but not when connected to a dumb charger, this is why.

Using a magnifier to see the pins adequately, I connected D+ and Dtogether with a little solder bridge on the printed circuit board. Although this isn't a 200 ohm resistor, it's sufficient to inform the n900 that it's connected to a dumb charger, and it starts to charge.

The power is nicely filtered and regulated, no noise on the audio output while charging, so this plays fine in the car while charging while some other dumb chargers contributed so much buzzing from their switching regulators that it wasn't possible to listen to music.

I guess manufacturers of dumb chargers are between a rock and a hard place, as not every phone expects the same thing. The ultimate unit would offer a switch on each USB port to fix this. Those who don't want to open their charger can also make a USB cable with a short or 200 ohm resistor between D+ and Dto solve this problem.

This works and it comes with the hardware to mount it somewhere so it won't slide around. As an extension and socket splitter it is OK.

However they missed an essential trick on the USB power supply. If a device wants a smart USB powered device like an iPhone or iPod to see it as a high power source, and not as a data connection, it needs to short the data interface pins with a resistor not more than 200k ohms. That is in the USB spec. You can tell this hasn't been done because when you plug in an Android phone it asks if you want to mount as a media device or a hard drive.

So if you are looking for a neat way to power and charge a modern smart device then this isn't it. For the 2c it would cost them for the resistors the manufacturers really should have done this. I may even try it myself since it looks like there is room to work in there and I have an electronics lab to play in.

I got these batteries for a razor e300 after installing they worked but I come to find out the razor had other issues. I can't say for sure if they hold charge or anything more except that they did charge up and when tested on another device(not a scooter) they powered it up.

They did get here quickly and the order was expedited quickly as well. I was even surprised they got here the day they did because it was during hurricane sandy so kudos to your company for sending it out quickly and to the post office for delivering it.

It wasn't custom, and it seems to be unidirectional, which is a problem because to fit it to particular car models one would have to turn it around so the cut mat would fit.

Too bad I only noticed this after the cut.

The quality was also not too impressive, husky not being all that husky... perhaps I should have gotten the ones sold at discount chains like Target, costing about 1/3, and just a bit thinner.

It has safety features involved to prevent those of us who are less automotively inclined from damaging our batteries. It will do a trickle charge and a fast charge and probably make pancakes (just kidding on the pancakes). But do you really need all of this for the price?

I personally don't but I have friends who would really get their money's worth out of this machine. If you have battery issues, or live with someone who can't seem to remember to turn out their lights then this thing will save a lot of time and headaches. If your battery only ever goes dead because it's dead for real then a cheaper charger to get you to a battery store will probably do the trick. Only you know which works in your situation.

I think it's a great product with a lot of great features it's just more than your average person will need.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I only give it 2 stars because I think the price is too high for what you get in comparison to other brands. This charger will do everything they say it will and do it well but please see my followup at the end of this review...it's a major negative!! I have other Bosch equipment and have always been satisfied with their quality. However, why pay over $100 for this when you can buy a "Battery Tender" brand that will do all this for a fraction of that price and is much simpler to operate? The battery clamps do not come attached and the connectors that do come attached are too small to go over the battery posts on most batteries. The Battery Tender (for a lot less money) gives you the choice of clamps or connectors (that are large enough to fit the battery posts) simply by unplugging the ones you don't want and then plugging in what you do want. Yes, this has 6 modes to operate and if you have a need for the other modes such as recharging a severely discharged battery or charging a 24 volt system on your bus then this is probably the one you want. However, if you are just wanting to charge a battery on an occasionally used vehicle and keep it fully charged without fear of overcharging then the other brand will do what you want for a lot less and is smaller and simpler to operate! I also found the instruction manual to be a little weak (at least the English version was).

UPDATE:

I just discovered another MAJOR disadvantage to this charger. I had a power outage today and I discovered that after the power is interrupted this trickle charger does not come back on in the charge mode. In fact, even a minor fluctuation in the power source and this thing goes in to "stand by". You have to be there and press the mode button to start it charging and/or monitoring your battery. This could be a real problem when left on a seldom used battery, such as a car in storage,and just when you thought the battery was being kept at full charge you realize it has not been charging since the last power interruption! The other above mentioned brand does come back on in the charge mode when the power is restored.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Bosch Autoparts has two battery chargers, the C3 and C7. The C3 is for 6V/12V batteries while the C7 is for 12V/24V batteries. Both will work for the usual contemporary 12V car battery. I have several vehicles which see little if any use in the winter, mostly lawn tractors and similar items where batteries tend to die if they're not regularly kept charged. I've used a Battery Tender (a competing product) with very good results. The Battery Tender is not helpful, however, if the battery is already so far gone that maintenance through a trickle charge will not bring it up to spec. That's where the C7 comes in handy. A battery exhausted by being run all the way down (leaving the lights on, for example), can be recharged with the C7. My alternative previously was to use a regular battery charger, then remember to disconnect that after a reasonable period and switch over to the trickle charger to prevent overcharging.

In any case, the Bosch C7 works very well at both maintaining and recharging batteries. The only down side I found is the one noted by another reviewer if the power goes out, the C7 stops charging and awaits further instruction. The Battery Tender, on the other hand, immediately picks up where it left off, without requiring a button to be pushed. This isn't good if you're keeping a car charged in a country home where the power tends to go off intermittently.

The unit works well and has a well designed interface that is intuitive and straightforward.

It is very user friendly, easy to connect and everything is taken care of by this charger and maintainer. It shows exactly where you are in the charging process by a lighted up circle (the further in the process, the more of the circle is lit, and it progressively goes from red to yellow to green).

One thing that I haven't read here is that the cable can be easily disconnected. The part of the cable that attaches to the battery or car charging points can be unplugged from the fuse box that is molded into the charger cable. Another thing: you could permanently mount the charger cable ends to the battery so you can easily once in a while hook it up for a maintenance charge.

I did extensive research in which charger would suit my needs, and this one came on top because of it's rock solid design and, truth to be told, the brand because of its decades of experience in the high end car industry.

I bought this charger for ~$90 right before my car battery was about to die. I guess I was just in time, it is working just the way it should. Almost a 'must have' for when you live in the Midwest (cold winters are hard on batteries).

Yes, I would recommend this product to friends and family.

It does what it says it does. Charge. I like the retractable cord feature. No messy cord in your glove box when stored and you only pull out how much you need so nothing dangles. The cord is flimsy though. Just be careful when pushing the button on body to retract it. The spring is strong and it may cause damage to the tip if you don't retract the cord with ease.

If you use your phone as a GPS Navigator (i.e. let Google Maps constantly download new imagery as you drive, using up your data, keeping the screen on, etc.) your phone will use up more power than what this charger is giving. Be advised.

The Good: It does what it says it does.

The Bad: It could be a little high quality:

1. The AC prongs are hard to flip out without help (e.g. a pen or key or anything else to grab/pry). Smaller fingers may have a better time, but my fat fingers can't get in the spot they prongs sit to pull them out. (Really not a big deal, as anything narrow-ish can get them out easily).

2. The USB ports could be deeper, firmer, and better constructed. They work, usually without effort. However, there are certain orientations where the connection fails (usually if there's a little tension on the cord, like if you have a self coiling cable and the plastic thing in the middle of the cable is pulling on the cord a little).

The OK and not their fault:

You should understand that this will charge a modern smart-phone battery about 75%. It's not even a full second battery, but this is what's advertised, and for many people (like me) it's fine.

Other thoughts:

I prefer it to an extended battery because 90% of the time I only really need the standard battery, and don't want to walk around with the extra large version.

I forget what I paid for it, but it seems like it was fairly inexpensive, and at that, it's a nice little tool.

The Incipio Technologies 2-port Universal Backup Battery Charger arrived on time from the vendor. The product worked as described. I had expected that it would hold greater than one charge. However, I must admit that I did not read anything in the specification or literature as to how many charges would be provided by this device. I had also purchased a spare battery for my Samsung Captivate. So far, I have found it to be more convenient to install a freshly charged battery rather than to recharge my battery with the Universal Backup Battery Charger. Consequently, I use this product as my backup battery if and when I have used the spare battery. It takes about the same amount of time to charge a discharged battery as my wall charger and I am able to use my phone while it is charging.

I really like the product and mounted it on My Triumph Rocket cruiser, but the head only rotates and since you cannot mount this accept to the side it faces away from the rider making it either impossible or difficult to see. At least I can charge my phone while I ride; the navigation or other features are useless if you can't see it.

Best in class--had a couple cars with shorts that needed lots of jumps and went through three other brands. Every one under $100 could not last or keep a charge long enough to work on demand.

The 2212 instantly started a dead battery on cold mornings. The 3 amp charger is much faster than cheapo models.

Basically it is a durable solid unit. You'll need to spend over $200 for a better jump starter. The long cables let me solidly place it while jumping, unlike the other boxes that barely reached.

Ill give you the good news first. This item will spin my 4.3 liter high-compression V8 like there's no tomorrow, and it will do it at least 5 times on one charge. It will hold a fresh charge for three months. It has a huge red digital readout that serves several purposes. It will let you know when you have a good connection to a car battery before you switch it on. It will let you know how much voltage it is providing, and it will tell you the charge state of its internal battery when it is in charge mode. There is also a warning if you cross up your leads. There is a cigarette lighter socket for 12V access.

Now for the bad news. First, you have to provide an extension cord, and, when you do, there's no place to store one of any length on the device. My advice is to buy the shortest single-socket 16AWG cord you can, and squeeze it onto one of the side hooks where the leads are stored. Otherwise expect to just leave the cord behind (probably the manufacturer's intent) or carry it separately. Second, while you can leave the charger plugged in full time without overcharging, there is a noisy fan that runs full time (and draws about 6 watts along with the display). Even if you charge it in your garage, you probably won't want to just plug it in and forget it for two years, because that fan will wear out sooner or later. At least it sounds like it will. (I wish they'd used a quieter fan of the type that comes on desktop computers.) Don't plan to store it in an unheated area in winter, because performance will suffer severely, although a sealed garage is probably warm enough in most climates. Finally, you can't use this thing as a charger to maintain a car's battery in the garage. It's not designed for that and won't allow it.

I'd like to make a couple of final points about battery-powered, jump-start devices in general. If your car's battery has failed catastrophically, meaning it's almost like a short circuit, you must disconnect one lead of the battery before using one of these. (Assuming your alternator is good, you can reconnect the battery once the car is running.) Otherwise, the bad battery will suck the charge out of the jump-starter. You may have encountered such situations with jumper cables, when you find you have to partially recharge the dead battery with a running car's alternator before you can start the car. This is the kind of thing that happens when you leave the lights on for a long time. It should not be the kind of thing that happens when you have tried to start the car and heard a clicking noise.

If your car's battery is dead because you've run it down while trying to start the car, you'll probably run the jump-starter down too. In fact, it will probably run down faster than your car's battery did, just because it's not as big. Don't blame the jump starter for either of these situations.

This jump-started does what it's supposed to do, and it is a good price. If you can live with the cord and the fan, and you don't ask it to perform miracles, you'll be happy with your purchase.

If you buy this product, watch out for one very strange quirk: No matter how fully charged the battery is, the digital readout will ALWAYS say it is 10% charged when you plug it into a charger. The readout will slowly creep up towards 100% over a few hours. But this readout is false: It has no connection to the actual charge on the battery. To determine the actual charge on the battery, press the "%" button on the unit and it will tell you the actual percentage the item is charged.

The Schumacher customer service department doesn't know that this is how the product works, and they will tell you that the unit is broken if you ask about it. You'll then have to pay $35 to ship the unit back to them to get a new one (it's very heavy), and it will take several weeks, and the new one will seem broken, too. But it's not: It's just a strange quirk of the way these machines are designed. Trust me: This happened to me twice before I figured it out on my own.

UPDATE: I have changed my rating of this item from three stars to one star because after having the unit replaced twice for the reason above, the third unit I received just totally stopped working within about two months of it being sent to me. This time, the unit was really dead: It takes no charge no matter how long it is plugged in, and gives zero read out. Ironically, I couldn't get a replacement unit because the new replacement was no longer under warrantee: The clock on the one-year warrantee started ticking when I received the first unit, and it was just about elapsed when I received the third one. So I ended up spending a year dealing with the service department to "fix" units that weren't broken, and then at the end I received a unit that stopped working after about 2 months. I guess it just wan't meant to be. I hope others are luckier with this product than I was!

This box sells for $300+ on the tool trucks, and is a professional class jump starter. You can crank a turbo diesel that has two batteries with this bad boy and not even make it sweat. Im giving it 5 stars even though you will have to buy an extension cord to charge it(because the jumper does not come with one). Any one in the automotive industry needs one of these in their shop.

This is a terrific product. After having it for approximately 6 months, we have found that it is an invaluable tool. We hunt and fish and have taken it with us for the boat battery, the 4 wheeler batteries, the camper battery, and the lawn tractors batteries. We have also used the plug in for a tire pump for all of our equipment. I would say that we have used it at least twice a week since we got it. We have not had to recharge it very often and the ability to check the internal battery is an added benefit. It also worked well for a small heater that we used in the deer stand. I don't know what we would have done without it and it is so much easier then plugging in a charger and running electrical cords everywhere.
