Retractable Car Charger for Amazon Kindle 2, Kindle 3, Kindle 4 Review
The sleek design and very convenient manner in which the charger cable locks and retracts totally sold me on this item. It's small enough to easily fit within the palm of your hand and store easily in a small niche in your vehicle. I was initially concerned that because the charger wasn't officially sold in conjunction with the Kindle Fire that there could be a problem with compatibility; there is absolutely no problem. In addition, this charger is purported to fit some cell phones. It does not work with my iPhone, but if you have a phone with a small connector such as the Kindle has, it should be able to do double-duty for you. Very nice product!

Originally bought this for an E260 Sansa media player, and was pleased to see such a good product for a very reasonable price. The story got even better after I changed my mind, and went with a different Sansa -the C250. Although I feared I might have to get a new charger, the Gomadic fit the older MP3 player just fine. I've used it for more than a month with absolutely no problems or concerns.The changeable tip system makes so much sense I'm amazed that it hasnt been done before. Quite simply, the standard charger ships with a plug in tip that fits the Sansa device standard. In the future, if that interface standard changes, or if I aquire other devices with the same power needs, I can theoretically get a different tip and keep the charger.
I'd buy this one all over again.

I use this as a backup power source for my pellet stove. If the power goes out when the stove is on, you get a smoky mess since it relies on a fan for combustion and exhaust. I chose to go the APC route instead of the stove-branded unit I feel more comfortable with a company that knows this business well. I could not be happier with it fast switching, charges the battery fast after the outage too. Ultimately simple as well the switch is either off, or automatic or charge-only. Set it and forget it!

Here in South Florida, we have what would be described as unpredictable weather... which leads to unpredictable power ;-). Since I work at home on the computer, I need to be able to work through our unexpected power outtages which can last several hours at a time. My UPS just wouldn't cut it for power outtages lasting more than an hour or so.Enter the king of UPS's, the APS 750! I bought a marine battery at Walmart for under $70 and connected it to the unit. Just the one battery gives me about 5 to 6 hours of run-time for both my desktop and my LCD monitor. If I need more run-time, I can simply connect more batteries in parallel.
Like a regular UPS, the unit charges when it has power, and switches to battery during a surge or blackout. Though the transfer time is a bit higher than a typical UPS, it doesn't seem to matter.

I have an off-road trailer that I use for research. I purchased the APS750 and coupled it with a 105 AH AGM battery in the nose box of the trailer. Away from mains power, it provides excellent run time for several laptops and communications equipment. I keep the battery charged with solar panels off-road and take advantage of the 20A charging capacity of the APS750 when mains power is available. It's a 750W sine wave inverter, transfer switch, and battery charger in a rugged package perfect for my needs. I highly recommend the APS750 for mobile applications where high quality and reliable power is important. I can see where it might make a good emergency power system too.[Edit Sept. 21, 2011: In my original review I stated that the Tripp Lite APS750 was a pure sine wave inverter. I removed that statement from my review as I learned through investigation that the output is pure sine wave when running on mains power (as expected) and PWM (pulse width modulated) sine wave when running on battery. PWM sine wave should not be confused with the fixed square wave output of cheaper inverters. PWM provides tight voltage regulation (+/5%) and eliminates harmonic noise the static hum you might hear with sensitive equipment if run on a cheaper square wave inverter. I brought one of these down to Costa Rica to deal with the unexpected power outages that happen on a semi regular basis. I hooked it up to two 100 amp hour deep cycle batteries. This will run my lights, electronics, wifi, computer, and short use of tools for a day or more (maybe much longer/ never tested). I separate & leave equipment with higher energy draws (like the refrig, pumps, washer, dryer, air conditioner) off the same power out electrical line. When set to operate automatically, this inverter takes over and supplies the 120 volts of electricity from the batteries via inverter when your grid electricity goes off. This unit will also regulate the grid voltage when voltage drops low or spikes high. The batteries are automatically recharged when the grid electricity comes back on. OK. This is VERY important. This unit does NOT output a real sine-wave when on DC power. The output is a chopped up "sine-wave" which drops to zero volts many times over a single wavelength. This unit does NOT play nicely with most furnace or pellet stove blowers, certainly not my 1/6 HP blower on my Lennox furnace. NOWHERE IN THE ABOVE DESCRIPTION does it say that the output on DC power is a "PWM sine wave output". However, if you go to the Tripp Lite website, find this product and go to the specifications tab, this is what you will find:LINE POWER (AC): Maintains 120V nominal sine wave output from line power source. INVERTER POWER (AC): Maintains PWM sine wave output voltage of 120 V AC (+/-5%).
Freaking great. So much for "clean, computer grade power". That is a load of B.S., honestly. If I had known, for even a second, that this unit didn't output a real sine wave, I would have purchased something else. Apparently, you have to get the TRIPP LITE APS1012SW 1000 Watt 12 Volt Inverter / Charger Pure Sine Wave 120 Volt 4A/40A Hardwire at approximately TRIPLE the cost to get a real sine wave output on DC power. So now I'm stuck with this thing, as I bought this thing, then researched batteries, then got that, then tested the setup out on stuff besides my furnace, then had to modify the wiring to/from my furnace by cutting it and putting an outlet in one box, and a power cord in another, so I could insert this setup in between furnace and mains power, and thus it's been more than 30 days. Nor will Tripp Lite help me, as it "clearly" says in the specifications that this is a PWM output on DC power. They will allow me to trade up to the 1012SW if I pay the difference in RETAIL prices.
So, yippee. Just dandy. If you buy this, make sure that you test it out within the return time on the actual equipment you want to backup power. And if you have a pellet stove, chances are it won't work according to what the Tripp Lite representative told me.

We used this solar kit over the week end. It charge out dual 12 volt batteries in about an hour. We used it every day while camping out for three days and on the third day the batteries were down to one bar out of four and after an hour it was charged. I was suprised has fast they were charged. The carring case is heavy duty nylon with a sturdy zipper. It comes with allegator clips adapter to attach to the battery and an adapter to attach directly to the battery bolts. The adapters have a special connectors with rubber protectors to cover the ends when not in use. The adaptors are about 2 feet long. The unit folds out and has built in legs that supports itself at about a 45 degree angle. The charge controller has settings for gel, sealed and flooded batteries. It took a while to figure out how it set the controller, it has one button to cycle through the settings and the LED light is difficult to see because it is not very bright. It only has to be set once the first time it is used. The kit has a third adaptor with connectors on both ends. I cut this in half and put regular extension cord plugs on each end and used a 25 foot extension cord to extend the placement range. This unit is well made but pricey.

First time we saw this portable kit we were sold us on the idea of an inexpensive upgrade to our outdated rooftop solar. The most painful part is: Our original Solar was 135 watts on the roof installed for $4,000.
This little portable kit from GoPower! is 120 watts with zero install and priced under $600.00!
I say "zero install" but we opted for the direct connect adaptor that came with the kit, now all we do is plug in when attaching the panel, it's nice not to worry about trying to clamp onto the batteries since the battery compartment in our RV is super tight. Installing this plug took less than a half hour, so we think it's a no brainer.
We find the main benefit for this panel is capturing the first light of the day. This way we can wake up and instantly be charging our batteries...and therefor we can start the morning coffee ritual first thing! Of course its also great for capturing the last drop of light before sunset, and for capturing additional sun during the winter when the sun sits lower on the horizon.
Things to know:
The first time I plugged in the kit the charge controller wasn't turned on, or set for my type of flodded battery. Read the instruction manual and you'll avoid this issue.
I wish the carrying case wasn't quite so fitted, sometimes I cannot zip up the case very easily.
A dream add on would be some sort of tiny attachment that would show when the panel is in full sun. My solar oven has this little plastic hole (almost like a sundial) that shows when max sun exposure is achieved.
Overall I'd recommend this portable kit to anyone who is looking to get started with solar, and for those who want to add flexibility to their current rooftop solar setup. We've been using ours for a few months now and wouldn't change a thing.
Of course once we started our solar wish list we ended up having the Go Power! (Solar Extreme) Solar and Inverter System installed as well...now we're set with way more solar than we can use...time to upgrade the battery bank!

When I took this camping for the first time the controller lights didn't work and there was no easy way to tell if the unit was charging. The maximum the voltage rose to on one new deep marine cell battery was 13.5 volts with full, bright sunlight on a 100degree day. I've had plenty of experience with solar panels, batteries, and controllers. There's no way to know if it's working properly without other meters. In fact I was drawn to this as an all-in-one unit to replace a cobbled together setup I had been using successfully for 5 years with less output. I've also built a house to run entirely on solar. Discount Goal Zero Yeti 150 Solar Generator
So I was skeptical at first. Was this going to last? Is it going to be enough? When I first unboxed it and plugged in to charge (no less than 10 warnings about charging on/in/all over the box) the wall charger made an annoying hum. Actually it was super annoying, I could hear it clear across the house. Quick email to customer service and they sent another one. That was re-assuring that they would stand behind this. The noisy charger did its job though and I have since recycled it. Now, for the real test, will it charge my other devices like advertised. The answer is YES! I can't comment on if it will do an iPad 6 times like they claim, but it has charged my iPad (new with Retina) twice along with running a 12v fan for 4 hours (.75Ah draw) and still had some in the bank. I don't know how accurate the LCD on the front it, but it showed 20%. I will be running this through a bunch of tests in two weeks when I go offshore and will have more then. For now, it is pretty solid even if it is on the pricey end. However with everything they have packed in (12v cigarette plug, 12v plug, USB, 120 inverter) and the solid feel, this is definitely a winner if you need a "wall outlet" away from civilization.
We also found Goal Zero tech support to be very helpful in answering our questions about how it works best, what gets the most power from the unit and which solar unit works well with the Yeti 150. We highly recommend this product

This unit was originally purchased to power a C-Pap machine on our camping trips where we don't have a power hook up. What we didn't realize is that when it is not being used for the C-Pap machine we use it to charge our cell phones, camera batteries, play our music with our cell phones and Pandora. We typically charge it during the day either by power or with a solar charger so it is always full to provide all the power we need. When we cant charge it in between, we have found the C-Pap machine can run for at least 3 nights (8 hours each) of power. This is a must piece of equipment for anyone in their own camper or car when travelling. Overall I love this company and their product. But if you are a CPAP user this battery does not have enough power to sustain a full nights sleep. I used this on a camping trip and it kept shutting off every 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours. Then after about 5 hours of bad sleep it was completely dead. As someone else already noted, there are better methods of listening to your MP3 player in your car, such as through the tape transmitter. For those of us who don't have it, though, this is a sufficiently apt substitute.
First, whoever said that there are 8 presets must be thinking of some other device. You only have 3 presets here, but you define them yourself from the whole FM range, an you can always deviate from them. Hence, this thing has an advantage over, say, the iTrip because you can easily surf between three stations if the one you're listening to now starts getting static.
Second, I find it powerful enough in most situations. I live in Boston, and drive around it often enough. Downtown, most stations will give you a small amount of interference, and that is probably the best you will get. Drive around the suburbs, though, and you can easily find around 3 stations that will play almost as well as your CD player in terms of quality.
The secret to this is to set your iPod volume somewhere around the middle to upper two-thirds of its capacity. If you set it to the maximum, all bass lines will be completely distorted. Set it to the middle, though, and you'll have rather crisp audio, although you will have to compensate for the lost volume by turning up the car radio. Hardly anything to complain about, though.
My two complaints with this device are these:
First, the marked price is far too high. You can find a much cheaper device on eBay, or even in the Amazon marketplace. I paid around $20 for it, plus delivery.
Second, some types of music sound distorted even at medium volumes on a lot of the stations. I have in mind the Waltz of the Snowflakes from the Nutcracker when I write this. Beside it, just about every song I played sounded clean, although sometimes a given station would encounter pockets of interference.
Given that a more powerful transmitter would probably end up messing up the radio reception of neighboring cars, I'm prone to think that this is an inherent problem to all FM transmitters. I think this is one of the better ones, though, because of its preset options, its ability to scan the whole FM range, the fact that it doesn't drain your iPod's battery, and the fact that you can manipulate your iPod volume on it for better performance. The iTrip can't do three of these. You will, of course, have to sit down in your car and look for usable stations manually, .2 by .2, but ultimately, and if you have no other option available, I think you will find this device to do a good job. Just do yourself a favor, and find a cheaper source.

I have owned this iPod FM transmitter for about 11 months and have used it while driving thousands of miles through many FM radio markets. In urban areas this unit is not useable, because, despite the availability of the three FM presets, you can't find open FM frequencies in urban areas, and if you do, the unit's FM modulator is not strong enough to overcome adjacent channel interference from city FM radio powerhouses, and typical poor car stereo FM tuner performance (selectivity).If you live in the country this unit's FM performance is just fine, unless of course you regularly travel to a nearby urban area.
Also, my unit "overdeviates"--the iPpod audio is distorted on loud passages when hooked up to my Dodge Durango with the factory stereo installed. When the FM transmitter is hooked to my Subaru's top-of-the-line McIntosh stereo, the audio is good.
I believe this product is overpriced, and should be sold with a caveat: Not useable in and around major cities.

It finds stations you could not find with the iCarPlay Plus, which I stopped using because it was just more hassle than fun to use driving in Los Angeles. I have used the Griffin and Belkin FM transmitters, and the Monster is the only one that is useful for me driving around Los Angeles, where almost all of the available FM stations are in use. The Monster has a lot less static and locks onto the station a lot better than the other two. It is good to have the three pre-sets on teh Monster ... that are easy to set. I need the three pre-sets bacause as you drive, one station gets noisy (as you get closer to the transmitter of the real owner of that frequency) and you need to change to another. It is a hassle to change the station on the radio and also change the station on the Monster, but that is life with an FM transmitter. It is definitely an imperfect solution. (If you have a cassette tape player in your car, use the Sony cassette adapter instead. I never tried the Monster cassette adapter.) For people who drive shorter distances or who don't have as many FM station broadcasting nearby, the other brands might be ok.

I absolutely LOVE my monster I have used it for my iPod Classic and my 1st gen iPhone. Works great! Charges and plays like its say but... DOES NOT WORK on new apple products.. I've tried the new nano, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S... do not buy this if you have one of the newer products. It will still play through your stereo but it WILL NOT charge. I did a lot of online research before buying this transmitter. I had low expectations since it seemed like most of them have mediocre quality and problems of one kind or another especially in metro areas. I decided on this one since this best met the criteria I had set for the purchase:1. Good Reviews
2. Price at $50
3. Easily protable from one car to another
4. Wanted the passenger to be able to control it in addition to the driver.
This product more than exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is awesome. I have never had any difficulty finding at least one station where there is no interference. Also, the protability and passenger use has really come in handy. It is great to let the passenger control the tunes.
I would highly recommend this product if your needs are similar to mine.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Recently I have purged my house of el-cheapo Ipad cables. They were just causing more problems than they were worth-loose connections, sync not working, long charge times.
This unit from Belkin is a nice contrast to the bargain basement cables.
The cable is thick-even thicker than the original Apple supplied cable. As a rough guideline, it is roughly 2/3 as thick as a typical ethernet cable. That may or may not translate to better performance, but at least it feels like the thing won't fall apart in six months.
The connectors are solidly attached. They are not one-piece molded, but have a rubber-like sleeve extending about 1/4" down the cable, so there is at least some stress relief on the connector. In other words, the wires should stay attached to the connector for normal use.
The apple connector body is quite a bit larger than the metal connector, meaning it may be a tight fit for some iphone cases, although mine works just fine. The plastic case is roughly 1/4" wider than the metal part of the connector in all dimensions.
The power adapter also appears quite well made, and it USB connector on it holds the cable tight enough so that it isn't going to fall out. All the surfaces are smooth and the corners are nicely rounded.
The black finish is looks pretty cool against my black iphone/case and ipad (which lives in a black case).
I didn't measure the charging times, but I tried it on both my iPhone4 and iPad3, and it seemed to charge as quickly as I have ever seen it. This is not always the case with the cheaper cables-where charging can take 2x or 3x longer.
My iPhone synched through the cable to my PC with no issues.
The only negative is that the cable is a bit stiff, and wants to maintain its original "kinks", and puts up a little bit of a fight when you try to coil it up. Hardly worth mentioning.
Overall, I'd be happy with this product, and will probably buy additional units to scatter throughout the house.

I purchased this item for a 10x15 shed. A lot of people of commented on the amount of light this thing throws out so let me start the review with that.
This shed light is powered by 3 AA batteries that get recharged by the solar panel. The solar panel does not provide any direct power for the lights and that is not what it is designed to do. If you expect 3 AA batteries to provide the same amount of power and therefore light as a 120 volt AC shop light you are going to be disappointed in this product, or ANY product that provides light from 3 AA batteries. If you expect it to provide the same amount of light as a flashlight powered by 3AA batteries then this product is going to deliver exactly what you expect out of it. In my 10X15 shed this product delivers about as much light as a night light. The light it emits is an unnatural blue color but it is adequate. It will keep you from tripping over stuff and help you to make out the difference between a lawn mower and a leaf blower in otherwise complete darkness. It is not suitable for performing detailed work and is not a substitute for lighting that would normally require an electrical connection. When used during the day with the shed door open, using this light does not increase the ambient light inside the shed at allnormal daylight completely washes out the shed light. This light is very useful at night.
The product documentation is severely limited but installation is fairly common sense. The screws that come with the unit are inadequate drywall screws and the Phillips heads will strip when you try to drill them into real wood. For some reason it also comes with drywall anchors as if your shed is going to be finished with drywall. If your shed has drywall it probably also has electricity and you wouldn't be reading this review. The product comes with a large threaded L bracket that is not in the documentation. It looks like it can be used as an alternate mounting bracket but you would have to partially disassemble the solar panel to use it. I threw it in the recycling along with the NiCad batteries.
The product comes with 3 AA NiCad batteries. I recommend that you immediately recycle them responsibly upon opening the box and use NiMH batteries. For one, NiCad batteries have a memory effect that modern batteries do not and they are poorly suited to solar chargers due to the charging cycles associated with a dubious power supply. Secondly, the flawed design of this shed light requires you to unscrew the "permanent" mounting in order to change the batteries. While NiCad batteries would have to be replaced annually NiMH batteries should last many years in this configuration and also can supply 6X the amount of power (longer running time) than NiCads.
Another flaw of this product is that the 3/16" cord running from the solar panel to the light unit has an approximately 1/8" plug but unfortunately it has a useless L configured plug that will require you to drill nearly a 1" hole in your shed to fit it through. I'm not sure what was going through the engineer's mind when this ridiculous feature was added but hopefully the manufacturer will fix this problem if the product is ever updated.
While the LED lights in this product have a very long running time (especially if you recycle the NiCad batteries as I recommend) most people don't need to spend hours in their shed. They would go in, fetch what they need, and then turn the light out. This product would be a lot more useful if it provided much more light for a shorter period of time. I think a running time of 1 hour per day is way more than adequate. I would prefer to have 4x the amount of light for 1 hour than I having ¼ the light for 4 hours in a shed light.
I purchased this product knowing all the limitations and I am happy with it. It performs exactly as I expected and it functioned right of the box. Some of the design elements are cheap and you should plan on having upgraded batteries and screws on hand before you attempt to install it. You will not want to unscrew the light and reinstall it to swap out the NiCads later, especially if you attempt to use the cheap included screws that will most certainly strip.
The fact that you have to completely uninstall this unit in order to change the batteries highlights another feature that it is missing. It is not portable at all. A great feature it could have had was to be portableimagine if the power went out and you knew you had a portable light source in your shed that could be quickly snapped out of its housing and used elsewhere. Or if you had some dead AA batteries you wanted to charge with your solar charger. The manufacturers really missed the boat on this one.

I can see why there is a dichotomy with the ratings. We purchased two of these for our detached garage. One of the lights gives off a relatively bright light, enough to find one's way around with ease at night. The other light was not as bright. The light has a hi-lo switch, and even on the 'hi' setting, the dud-light gave off only a dim glow. We did not return it for another light because after the hastle of installing this light with the solar panel on the roof, it didn't seem that important to us. Reading from the reviews I wasn't expecting much from such a low price solar shed light. I went ahead and ordered anyway and I'm very very pleased with the results. The light itself came almost fully pre-charged which aided in not only knowing how bright it would ultimately be, but also was useful in locating a good spot for it in the shed before permanent mounting.So out of the box you get a
* solar panel with hardwired 16ft cable
* exterior mounting bracket with swivel feature
* interior light and mounting all in one
* all screws etc
* strange L shaped metal rod which appears to serve no useful purpose due to the design of the mounting bracket!
The light itself is super bright for a solar led; we have a small shed at 6'x 8' and it saturates it with enough light to find even the smallest item or even work in there. I couldn't say how long the light lasts on a single charge however, but it's perfect for popping in and grabbing some tool as the day gets longer. The light has a half/full option where the top row of leds can be switched off to increase the duration that the lights last at the expense of brightness nice touch. There's also a small red led to indicate that it's charging and comes with a one foot toggle pull string to switch the light on or off.
My only gripe, which was mentioned in another review, was the connector for the panel to the light was L shaped not straight through as shown in the amazon product pic. This meant making a hole about the width of your finger to be able to push the connector into the shed and then having to silicon it all up to make it watertight. If it was a straight connector, the hole would barely be bigger than the cable itself. A surprisingly poorly thought out design given the rest of the product.
But the rest IS perfect and you cannot go wrong for the price.

Advertised as having a 20ft cord...at best it's only 16ft!Pivot mount for the solar panel is totally useless...very poor design!
There was a 6 inch "L" shaped treaded metal rod included with the hardware with no instuctions on what's it for! The light works well so far...not real bright but good enough to find things.

I wanted something for my garage out in the back yard, thought this would be great since there is no power out there. The light works fine, for now, but it is bovious that it is not constructed well at all. It is no very bright, but enough so you don't trip over stuff. It was very easy to install, and yes, they should have given instructions as to what to do with the metal rod. Took me a minute to figure out that it is an optional brace for the solar panel. If it cost any more, I would pay for the shipping to return it. I would NOT buy another one from this company, but DO PROMOTE the use of solar power in any way possible.Wednesday, April 30, 2014
