The only little thing to note: I usually would leave it plugged in, but in the clear section there is a pretty little blue light that stays on when it is plugged in. Now while this looks cool, I'd prefer NOT to advertise to anyone and everyone that walks by my car that I may have a cell phone plugged into my lighter!

I recently got my mom the Samsung Rugby II with AT&T. I got this charger set for her for Christmas and she is thrilled to have the extra chargers around. They are a great price, and she says they charge the phone just fine. Maybe they won't last as long as the OEM charger because of how cheap they are(who knows), but they are working just fine now. It will be especially nice to use the USB data cable to get some decent ringtones and backgrounds onto her phone. The Rugby II comes without much, so the data cable will be very helpful in sprucing it up. Very happy with the purchase.

Couldn't be happier. AT&T wanted 30 bucks for a car charger alone. It may bave been a little better quality, who knows... it's was made in China too, and $2.00 for a wall charger, car charger and UBS cable was just about what I figure any trio of products made in China is worth; including an HP computer, an iPhone and a Hugo Boss shirt.

For my 2012 TaoTao Cy50-A, this battery doubled the factory battery power and size; fits perfectly instead of bouncing around in the battery compartment. So far, it's proving to be high power, high quality. I will update if that changes. I cannot give five star because the mounting is a headache; they use square nuts that you have to figure out how to elevate (I used small chunks of foam) and line up perfectly before you can get the bolts on; that would be easy to simplify.

Has more than paid for itself by saving roadside service calls plus the time and inconvenience it has saved... a great back up for when lights are accidentally left on and drains the battery too low to start the vehicle. Requires a functional lighter to work.

BTW, not meant to use for a bad battery that will not take a charge; only for situations where your battery still takes a charge but is run down ie by a light left on or a loose/corroded battery terminal, etc.

I bought one of these in a store about 3 years ago (I've forgotten which automotive store it's been so long). I had a number of instances back there where I needed a jump, and I loved those little kits the triple AAA guys carry to jump cars, much easier than involving another car. So when I saw this in the store I had to buy it. I admit the entire time I've had it I was skeptical it would work. But fortunately I've not had occasion to use it, until today. I remembered that I had this in the back, and despite the package saying a 5 year lifetime, I was not at all confident that it would work after this long. But I opened it up, followed the little instruction list on the back of the battery, and sure enough 10 minutes later my car started right up. The thing paid for itself because triple AAA wanted to charge 35 dollars to come down and jump us. Totally glad I bought this thing.

And like other reviewers have said, this won't help if you have a piece of crap battery in your car. Even normal jumping won't get you far with a lousy battery that needs replacing.

Another thing: Make sure you have some strong scissors in the car to open it, or take it out before storing in the car. I was lucky I was at a library at the time, and could borrow a pair. They make the plastic packaging on these things very strong.

I tested on my Iphone 3gs and 2nd gen nano.. Battery indicators came up as charging with no issues, synching devices also no issues.. I also tested on external battery packs such as Trent and just mobile, product works like a charm.. It does not charge when connected to a usb hub without a power source, but it does sync's with no issues.

1/21/13 I have only had this for a couple of weeks, but seems to be working absolutely fine. I was reluctant to buy it as I thought it might be a gimmicky little piece of junk, but it is not. Now...again....I've only had it a couple of weeks, but it appears to be made well and does the job. What I like so much is that I am rid of the bulky cord. I store the charger in the glove box and the bulky cord on the original car charger took up too much room. The retractable mechanism on the Retractable Car Charger springs right back in when you hit the little button. It is too soon for me to say how the retractable mechanism is going to hold up, but it seems to have quite a spring to it so I feel it will last for quite a while. I don't charge the phone regularly in the car so there really is no reason for the spring to wear out. I paid under $5 for this item and my feeling is if it fails in a couple of years....I've had my monies worth. By then I'll more than likely have changed phones and also more than likely this retractable charger will not be applicable to a new phone. My only suggestion would be that you store it inside of something to protect it. I wouldn't just throw it into the glove box. The reason I have purchased it is that the original car charger that came with my phone got damaged while in the glove box. The piece that goes into the phone for charging got crushed by something in the glove box. We cannot figure out what happened as we don't store anything heavy in the glove box, but none the less the piece that went into the phone was crushed and destroyed. So, again, I would put the Retractable Car Charger inside of something to protect the little piece that goes into the phone. I've put mine inside of a small makeup bag, but anything that has a little padding that can offer some protection will do.

The OptiMate 5 is hands down the best battery maintainer money can buy. I have had this now for about 6 months and every time I want to ride my motorcycle, I CAN!

Gone are the days where I would go to start my bike and hear the ubiquitous clicking noise. I used to have the itch to go ride and then I'd have to charge up the battery and by then, I didn't want to ride anymore. This was the best purchase I have made in a while, as it has directly resulted in more riding time and absolutely ZERO hassle.

This maintainer DOES NOT CHARGE YOUR DEAD BATTERY! It was not intended to do that. It just cycles the battery and keeps it topped off. You must charge your battery prior to plugging this in.

I highly recommend you get multiple pigtails to hook up to all your outdoor toys/tools and you can then keep all of your items fully charged!

I have been very impressed with the way this works. It doesn't make any noise like other battery chargers I have used in the past, it won't cause thermal runaway and it has brought back several of my batteries from the dead after a short charge from my main battery charger. I got the OptiMate 5 charger with the 15' extension and Weatherproof Permanent lead through Amazon about 1 1/2 months ago. I Had a smaller older one that worked very well so wanted a second better one with a couple more benefits. It brought back a weak battery at least for a little bit longer and keeps my other batters charged at all times. I use for Generator and a lift I have and electric golf kart. I'm a contractor so not messing with dead batteries all the time now. Not for jump starting and fast charging but great for maintaining and long term . You can just leave it hooked up and not worry about it, but your battery will always be charged. There is a connector where you can connect 5 batteries to one charger at the same time too.

I bought this specifically because it's touted as being able to charge an iPad. I've tested it now for over 6 months with iPhone, iPad, and (with adapter) AA camera batteries at several latitudes (Phoenix to Seattle) and over several seasons (summer-winter). It's performance far surpasses that of a MUCH more expensive 10w B*u*t*n model purchased at REI a year or 2 ago that I returned due to worthlessness.

As you'd expect, it works better in the summer in AZ and at higher altitude than in the fall & winter in WA & OR. Solar cells need strong sun to work well, period. It easy charges an iPhone about as fast as wall outlet in strong sun (45-80 min.). iPad performance is OK, not stellar, it does work but plan to set aside most of the afternoon (4-5+ hours in strong sun). I've really never achieved a full, 100% iPad charge but it did keep me going for extended Kindle reading at remote campsites. I have had success charging on the car dash as well.

Chinese solar cells have come a long way in price & performance in the last year or so. BTW, this model has increased 20% in price in the last few months, and I would still give it 4 stars at the higher price. It's a bit too heavy for extended backpacking (maybe on an overnighter it'd be OK, but I'd think twice before humping this brick on a long trail). The sleeve has a very handy pocket for the battery, cables and adapters, and the loops make it a cinch to hang from a tree, etc.

Summary: Well worth the purchase price, I'll give a solar panel 5 stars when it works as well as an outlet.

The solar panel is impressive and the battery is effective. However, the battery is described as 5600mAh when it is really 5200mAh, a different product. The battery's output is 1amp which is not effective for charging an iPad 3 or 4. The panel will charge the iPad 3 directly, however, in direct sun. When charging an iPad 3 directly, if a cloud passes by, the charging will be interrupted. Instapark sells a 6000mAh, 2amp battery.

I used this to keep my iphone charged while doing my two weeks of military training this past month. It worked great charging as if it were plugged into the wall (lots of good sun). I would plug in my phone first thing in the morning, and in a couple of hours while eating breakfast and getting ready for the day of training my phone was at 100%.

There were two days out of the two weeks we had rainy overcast weather. I used the 5200mha battery on those days and I was never without power. If I used the battery, I would charge both the phone and the battery the next day simultaneously. The phone still charged quickly while charging the battery as well.

Even in slight overcast, this would continue to charge my iPhone 4S quickly. Great for emergencies or hiking/camping.

First of all, if you are looking at this panel, make sure you get it with the battery pack.

The panel charged the battery quickly even with partial cloud cover which is extremely important. Fully charged, the battery pack recharged my Galaxy S3 twice and my Kindle Paper White twice as well; and it still had power left. When using both USB ports on the panel, charging is a about 1/3 longer, but, that still only took a couple hours (probably less, but I had more things to do than just watch the charge level on the devices).

Obviously, this isn't designed for larger devices, but it works great for our phones, kindles, and garmin.

Small enough to easily pack in a backpack or strap to the outside of a pack or tent, this is one addition to our gear that is already indispensable.

OK solar panel, even though I read several reviews on how well it works, it will cut charging if a cloud passes by (I live in Canada, tested in summer, full sun day). If is a full sun day, it works well. Nice construction, fast shipment. Only complain is they sent a smaller battery package than requested (Advertised was 5400, received a 2500.....). Might be it is just a shipping mistake, I am still waiting on the right one to be sent.

I love this transmitter! When I first got it, I was disappointed that it seemed like you could not transmit in the best frequency of 87.9, but then I figured it out:

To change it to international mode (with the frequency 87.9 and so forth) all you have to do is hold the preset button for about 15 seconds, and the US will start flashing. Then you just hit the plus or minus to change to international mode, and voila! You now have the much coveted 87.9 frequency!

Since this transmitter will always be usable for any future mp3 player that I can imagine, (they are all going to have to have headphone jacks, right?) this means:

THIS IS THE LAST TRANSMITTER YOU WILL EVER HAVE TO BUY!

End of story. Get it. Now.

As an iPhone owner it took months for us to find a FM transmitter that gave us the ability to use our iPhone's iPod music capability in the car. Yes, this item is compatible with iPhone. Please see pros and cons below... (reviewed updated 6/21/2008)

Pro:

-iPhone and other MP3 player compatible (i.e. equipped with a "super minijack" headphone connection). Note: please don't confuse compatible with exceptional quality.

-Will power the iPhone and I think it can serve as a charger for it too

-Stores 4 pre-programmed stations

-Long cord could connect to a back seat lighter, not just the front (nice for those of you who have a lighter/socket in the rear)

-Acceptible broadcast strength, plenty loud as long as the iPhone volume is set loud.

-Price is reasonable relative to others on the market

-Buttons are flush with the front, fewer accidental button presses like I had experienced with my other (obsolete) transmitter

-In addition to buttons that cycle through the presets, there's up/down buttons to fine tune stations

-Socket has green LED when ready, turns amber when charging signaling that you are actually getting power

-Plastic case is less hard to open than others, the first that I can recall where I could pull it apart by hand (there's a tab in the back)... although a heavy pair of scissors are recommended

-Price is moderate, less than many (although not the least expensive either)

Con:

-Display is not backlit

-Broadcast strength and quality could be better

-Two cords, one plugs into the headphone jack, the other supplies power... a "quick and dirty" design (other competing models now use only one connector through the bottom connector, no separate connection to the headphone jack)

Nuetral:

-You must supply your own USB-based power cable. Since this is a one-size fits all device, it would be unreasonable to ask them to give you one for every player on the market...

-A small display... a pro or con, depending on the situation

-Made overseas, where quality often suffers (however, so far so good)

-Between the cable and the power cords, that's a lot of cable. I used the twist ties that came with the unit to help wrap up the excess wire to minimize tangling, you may want to too

-For iPhone users: the iPhone periodically emits a powerful magnetic field that interferes with this unit. I've found this true with other devices like my clock radio and phone at work

Bottom line: with recent advances now 3 stars (Amazon does not allow you to change the rating for an item once it is ranked). There are better items now on the market, but a low-cost option, especially good for non-iPhone applications due to random iPhone static interference.

This device works really well... IF you change it from US frequencies to International as explained by Random Bimms in another review of this product. (Thanks Random!!) I was having trouble finding a clear frequency in the D-FW area until I found the secret of setting it to 87.8 MHz. Too bad this tip isn't included in the instructions. With the USB charging connectivity, this is truly a universal transmitter/charger. Don't lock yourself into a unit that is dedicated to a particular brand/model... this one works with all of them that have a standard stereo headphone jack and USB charging.

I purchased this because other reviewers reported it fits the built-in jack on the Baofeng UV5R extended battery. No it doesn't. It fits in the desk charger. I bought this with the sole purpose of plugging it in and putting my radio in a cup holder. I can't see the practicality of putting my DESK charger in my car; the radio would constantly flip out and fall.

I wonder if other reviewers actually bought this item or just looked at the pic and exclaimed,"Ooo, I know what that's for !!".

Be advised; this charger does work, but not in the manner others have stated.

This cable works in concert with the charger that comes with the transceiver. A must if you need to charge a battery and do not have an electrical outlet. I bought a spare battery to switch on the radio and the depleted battery can be put in the charging cradle with the car charger cable plugged in. Really rounds out the system.
