I originally got another 2-way radio (Audiovox GMRS1100 2CH), then traded up. ....

The T5820 seems sturdy. A little bigger and heftier than the Audiovox, it's shaped to fit the hand, and has rubber grips and cushioning. I'd try to avoid dropping either unit (if you need milspec durability, get a Yaesu), but this unit is more likely to survive impact. It's also splashproof, though not submersible.

Audio quality is where the Motorola shines. It has a real volume knob rather than a button, which together with the better-quality speaker lets you hear more clearly at both loud and quiet settings. The roger beep is clear but not louder than the conversation, and the inevitable end-of-transmission click is muted. I also like the Moto call tones much better than the Audiovox bleeps, and there are more of them.

Operation is logical, the buttons are well-placed and the belt clip locks firmly and detaches easily.

The LCD is smaller than on the Audiovox but easy to read. Both units use a mode button to step you through the functions, both have 22 x 38 channels, and both LCDs have clear indicators of what's going on. The Moto LCD is better illuminated.

All radios are FCC-limited to .5 watt in the FRS range. The Audiovox has more output power in the GMRS range than the Moto (1.8 watts vs. 1w) and has an SMA-standard antenna you can switch out for more range. Its hands-off VOX function works with the built-in mic and speaker, while the Moto's works only with a mic plugged in. You can also monitor two channels simultaneously on the Audiovox. On the other hand, the T5820 can exclude noisy channels from the scan sequence, and has a silent vibration mode for discreet paging. Neither radio has a real squelch control, but both can stay on and scan while charging.

The big plusses of the Motorola are the quality of its mechanical design and its audio. After all, you use a radio to talk and listen. The big defect of the Audiovox is its difficulty picking up transmissions from non-Audiovox radios! Something about the frequency deviation made the reception unintelligibly choppy on most of the traffic I heard.

I've done no range testing yet. We expect to use this radio mostly around the neighborhood, and while shopping and running errands. For all that the 2-mile FRS range will do fine. When we next go on a climbing or boating trip I'll get the FCC license ... that's needed to use the 5-mile range GMRS channels.

I have used ICOM IC-4008A FRS-type radios for the past several years and wanted an output power upgrade for distance. The black ("graphite") T5820 units were on special, and after the rebate I paid $60 for the pair.

Thay have been satisfactory for all the uses I have, with one modification and one upgrade. The upgrade was to install the rechargeable battery packs, which allowed me to do the modification, which was sealing the hole in the battery compartment cover.

The Motorolas have worked for me during beach and boating use, and during hiking. They have been used in the rain and occasionally splashed with no harm done. The speakers are made from polymer and sealed around their periphery (according to the factory guy I talked to) and the battery compartment cover has a rubber gasket, which is hard to see since it is black on black. This leaves the hole in the battery compartment cover. The hole allows the cover's latch to be opened, but also is an entry point for water. I solved this by going to the nicad rechargeable batteries (so the batteries do not have to be changed frequently) and also attaching a piece of black vinyl electrician's tape over the latch hole and past the bottom edge of the cover a bit. This closes the hole and keeps the battery compartment cover from falling off if the unit is dropped.

With these changes, the radios are great for my purposes. I have obtained about 3 miles over the water they may go further, but I haven't had a way to test them over 3 miles.

I like them so much that I am buying another pair with the nicad battery option.

Best Deals for Motorola TalkAbout T5820 AA 5-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way

These are, even on sale, more expensive than a lot of these FRS/GMRS units. However, they have a nice heft and feel; solid little units that work very nicely.

I haven't pushed their distance ratings to their limits -they work terrificly for kids going into the woods or down the road, talking to home base.

With Motorola's "Interference Eliminator Codes", I haven't had any problems finding an unused channel & code combination.

Some notes:

Motorola's Interference Eliminator Codes aren't compatible with all other makes of FRS/GMRS radios, so you'll have to check that if you want to use multiple brands of radios together.

Uses 3 AA batteries each, 6 total. They will last all day monitoring, with moderate talking, but you'll want a big stock of batteries or a set of rechargeable AAs.

There is a built-in NiCd rechargeable battery unit that replaces the standard 3 AAs of this model radio, available as an extra purchase. However, also look in to the other T5820 units that come with the NiCd built in. (search for T5820 to see the various options and colors.) ...

FRS is a low-power (1/2 watt, "2 miles") mode, free like the old Citizen's Band, while GMRS is higher power (1 watt, "5 miles") and requires an FCC license. This unit does both FRS and GMRS (though only a portion of the channels of each). A GMRS license is (relatively) easy to get ..., but you'll pay ... for one license to cover the whole family for 2 years, any number of radios. ("Relatively easy" means online government forms that are far easier than, say, filing your taxes. You have to get an "FRN" number, and then apply for the license.)

Honest reviews on Motorola TalkAbout T5820 AA 5-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way

My fiance and I play a lot of airsoft (kinda like paintball) and we use radios like this a lot. I have to say, I am not very fond of our Motorola radios! We constantly had issues with sound quality, even within short distances. Half the radios we bought ended up broken after only a few uses!

Another annoyance with the radios is the talk button which is sunk in to the side and annoying to press, especially when you're wearing gloves! It takes a pretty hard push to activate, which I found very aggravating. We also had issues with accidentally messing with the volume all the time because of poor placement of the volume control.

These might work better for people who are not so rough on their radios, but for us they just weren't acceptable. There are much better choices out there, especially for the price!

I am always skeptical about FM transmitters for music playback through the radio of one's car. Having tried many of these devices I was never really pleased with the sound quality because of the amount of static that could be heard over the soundwaves.

I am happy to say that this device works GREAT! As long as there is nothing electrical between this transmitter and the antenna of your car, the clarity of the signal is amazing! I turned down the sound of my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to see how much static I could here and pumped up the car stereo volume and I could barely hear any static!

I use it with a cup holder cigarette lighter power unit (it also has TWO USB power connectors) so I can power other music devices while using the 3.5 mm jack to port the sound through the car speakers.

Two thumbs up on this gadget!

Cord not compatible with iPhone 5, not only does it say "not supported by Apple" the lightning side of the plug is junk and has to be wedged against something to get it to stay charging! Terrible buy from a name brand company, back to my OG white apple cords.

Best Deals for Belkin 2-Port Car Charger with Lightning to USB Cable for iPhone 5

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The 2.1 AMP chargers give you the charging power of your iPhone wall outlet chargers on the go. Initially, I scoffed at the price for these high AMP chargers and bought a 1 AMP car charger. Since my ride to work in less than 20 minutes, I would probably get 10% more charge off the 1 AMP charger, but with this 2.1 AMP charger, I manage to juice up about 25%. The really cool part of this charger is that I can pull out the USB cable and continue charging my phone via my laptop USB port.

The charger is similar in design to the Griffin PowerJolt Dual Universal USB Car Charger for iPhone, iPod, PDA, Cellphone, MP3 robust construction but bulky, though I am unsure of the need of such a large case (almost 2x) when Scosche has managed the same in a slimmer profile SCOSCHE usbc202m VOLT c2 Dual 10 Watt (2.1A) USB Car Charger Car Charger Retail Packaging Black

The charger has a dull blue bezel which keeps lit when the charger is plugged in. I prefer this for night driving over the single LED. I also like the new low-profile negative (outer) terminal design. No more accidental snagging and ripping the terminal out of the charger. It also helps with a smoother insertion and removal from the power outlet.

The lightning connector is well designed and fits most cases without any issue (check images above)

At current market prices this slightly bulky dual 2.1 AMP USB charger is better value than any other single 2.1 AMP USB charger.

Pros:

* 2 USB Port with 2.1 AMP / 10 Watts per port

* Solid feel to the product. Well built and sturdy parts charger, cable and lightning connector

* Included USB Lightning cable

* Fast charging almost as fast as a wall outlet charger. Approx 2.5 hours for a full charge

* Well designed lightning connector fits most cases without any issue

Cons:

* Pricey at $35 but not too expensive at current market rates for a dual (or single) 2.1 AMP charger with a reliable, detachable Lightning cable

* Bulky design

* The charger has a dull blue bezel that remains on when the charger is connected. It seems inefficient to power the gremlins. I have old USB car chargers that turn-off when a device is not plugged in, light up Red when charging and Green when fully charged I paid less than $10 for those chargers

* For a car, I prefer a coiled cable like this one, just keeps things compact Griffin Tech PowerJolt SE Coiled Lightning Car Charger for iPhone 5, Touch 5G, Nano 7G

Honest reviews on Belkin 2-Port Car Charger with Lightning to USB Cable for iPhone 5

The charger itself works fine, but the cable died on me within a few weeks!! What a joke! I spent more money on a better rated item, but the cable dies quickly! I plug it in and it is on the fritz, charging for 2 minute then randomly stops then charging again, then randomly stopping. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I know it is not the charger because everything else works in the charger and when I plug the cable into a computer or an outlet converter, it still craps out! GRR!!!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Belkin charger itself is nicely constructed and easy to hold for inserting and removing from the socket. I like the tapered body and the soft rubber green strip that aids grip. The charger worked fine with my iPad I'm not equipped to measure its actual power output, but I have no reason to believe it doesn't meet its spec.

The cable is a fairly typical-looking Lightning cable. I like that the Lightning end is almost the same size as Apple's, so it won't have issues with some cases as some other cables, such as the Amazon Basics, can. I also like that it's four feet instead of the usual three.

I knocked off half a star for there being no LED to indicate that it is powered. Nearly all third-party chargers I have used have such an LED. Also, the AC prongs are fixed and don't fold.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Belkin cord is 1 foot longer and has a heavier cable cover. The lightening plug grip is a little wider and longer and is matte plastic instead of Apple's glossy so it is easier to plug in and unplug. The power adapter is sleek and compact; 1-1/8" wide x 2-1/8" long x 1-3/4" deep including the plug. There is a silicone ring around the face that provides a more secure grip.

Overall I prefer using the Belkin charger over the Apple. The only feature I wish Belkin added was a folding plug so it would a smaller profile for traveling with.

Best Deals for Belkin Home and Travel Wall Charger with 8-Pin Lightning Cable

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program What can I say? It's a lightning cable that works just as you'd expect it to do. The wall charger is a bit bigger than the OEM cube that comes with your iOS device but it works consistently. I think it may even charge a bit faster than the ones that came with iphone. But for the price, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just buy the Apple charger or the cheaper Amazon branded lightning cable which work great for me.

Honest reviews on Belkin Home and Travel Wall Charger with 8-Pin Lightning Cable

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I love this charger! It charges quickly and fits in my backpack so I can always have the charger while I am at school. Belkin has always done a wonderful job of making quality products for your Apple devices, and this one lives up to my expectations!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Belkin Home and Travel Wall Charger is a nice unit with one minor issue.

First the good: The USB cable is very sturdy, and is thicker than the Apple cord. It charges my devices very quickly. It is reasonably small for travel. Though, it is larger than the Apple travel charger, it doesn't block the second plug in a standard outlet. I have a lifeproof case on my iPhone and the lightning connector fits easily, though a tiny bit snug, which I don't find to be an issue. Lastly, the lightning adapter cable is 4 feet long, which is about a foot longer than the OEM Apple cable.

The slightly less than good: The large bezel around the lightning adapter may not fit into certain cases. The blades on the wall adapter don't fold in; it would be more convenient if they did.

Lastly, the price. Though it is about the same cost as an Apple adapter, I think most people expect a non-OEM product should be at least a little cheaper. But I have to say, the few issues, aside, I would pay for this adapter over the Apple adapter should I ever have to make that choice.

I purchased one of these from another vendor for about $130 shipped. I have used it for several months, including the collar mic, surveillance kits, multiple antennas, both as an amateur radio operator and in public safety. It works fine with good audio quality, but there are a few issues:

The radio's scan feature is crippled. If the radio is in scan, and you press the button to turn on the backlight, it stops scanning. If you press the button to turn on the LED, it stops scanning. If you try to lock the keypad, it stops scanning. If you want to change which channels are included in the scan, you have to reprogram it from a computer. You can't even use the dual VFO feature while in scan mode even though the second channel is still shown on the screen, it is never checked.

The radio itself has developed a problem. Under certain circumstances which aren't entirely clear, it will occasionally completely reset itself. I suspect this is due to a power connection issue inside the radio, but for something this cheap I'm not surprised. I'm probably going to replace it and use the broken one as a base station radio.

The belt clip, where it connects to the battery, is too tight. It takes serious effort to remove the belt clip. Which would be fine, except that it's also weak. The piece that actually fits in to the battery has broken on me, necessitating a replacement. In fact, all of the plastic pieces here are of significantly poorer quality than what you would get with, say, a Motorola.

I have used the longer antenna. It's too long to use in the field, but as a base antenna it works fine and does improve quality. While we're talking about antennas, on my original antenna the plastic piece has chipped, resulting in the actual antenna coming out of it at an angle. It still works, but yet another example of poor materials. The replacement antenna, the end cap fell off and got lost, so I had to cover it with gaffer's tape.

The surveillance earpiece works fine. The surveillance microphone does not. I am told that it results in a 'muffled' sound which is barely readable. The collar mic works fine.

The product was shipped in a timely manner and arrived when they said it would. The radio seems to be made really well and will probably serve the purpose that I wanted it for. The only problem that I have is that the Instruction booklet assumes that you already have experience with HAM radios. It is really hard to understand. I had to contact a HAM operator to get him to help me understand the language in the manual. The manual should also be proofed read by someone that speaks English if it is being shipped to the USA.

Matches or outperforms my commercial Motorola and Kenwood radios. It is easy to program and it transmits on and receives on VHR/UHF clearly. Also, the FM radio is a nice feature.

Review of XTAR XP4 Panzer Ni-MH/Li-ion Charger with USB Charging Port

XTAR XP4 Panzer Ni-MH/Li-ion Charger with USB Charging Port for Cell Phone & Car Adaptor
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

This charger is code named "Panzer" and in my opinion aptly too as the construction feels solid just like a tank. I kept on getting the model of this charger wrong initially because of their significant lineup. My advice ? Just call the frigging thing Xtar Panzer! Nice ring to it and easy to remember.

The charger even comes with it's own verification code to ensure that the charger is genuine. It works albeit just a little too spartan or basic to be truly impressive or memorable.

The springs feel and work well without much hint of needing any lubrication. I based this finding comparing with other chargers with springs which normally need a touch of lubrication to work normally. The case also feels solid and surprisingly does not feel light or 'cheap'. I would say on this end, I am happy that Xtar did not spare when it came to materials to build the charger, even though the cost of them putting everything into the charger did show on the box material. The charger has got a nice solid feel to it. While I would have liked to have a digital display to show charging progress of batteries, for an initial effort from Xtar, this is sufficient. Here is a picture of the charger with the 4 bays in question. These chargers because of the protrusion on the metal contact will work with flat top batteries too. Initially, I was not used to the way the battery fit into the bays but after a few days I found it to be second nature. I guess the initial issue I had with it was because this is my first unit that uses a spring loaded.

Performance (4/5):

Some confusion I had initially was about the temperature sensor on the charger. On the manual it states that the charger's "operating temperature" for NiMh batteries was about 40 Celcius. I mistaken this for that the device contained some kind of temperature sensor but as pointed out by xtar representative this is not true. One thing I must note here is that the representative from Xtar must be given a point here because of their exemplary service. Every question that I had ranging from when the charger is going to be released right up to if the charger contained any temperature sensors was answered courteously and in a timely manner. Back to the charger, while it did not have a temperature sensor, none of the batteries that I charged on it became anything beyond warm because I suspect that it's heat dissipation is really good. I guess what it really meant by "operating temperature" really means what normal temperature the charger will be operating at when charging NiMh batteries.

I don't really have any of those fancy man toys to measure heat via thermal images beyond a child thermometer so you have got to take my word without backing proof here. Normally for NiMh battery chargers, currently in the market there are roughly 3 ways to terminate charge on a battery and switch to trickle charge:

dv Change in voltage as in a voltage dip after being fully charged.

dT temperature controlled as in the cases where the battery becomes overly warm.

Time controlled. This is the so called "dumb charger".

Ideally a NiMh charger should have the ability to do 1 and 2, just in the case if the voltage detection fails, then at least the possibility of the batteries melting in the charger can be avoided. The best case scenario is if a charger can do all three. This charger can do one of them and in most cases do it rather well so I guess it's acceptable, just that the "operating temperature" might be confusing and bring certain people for a loop.

Nearly all of the charging scenario, my findings are all based on the 0.5A charging settings as running on the 0.25A settings, some of the charging could not be terminated and was running indefinitely. After numerous exchanges on the forums namely candlepower forums, I was informed that 0.25A is way too low and most chargers would miss the termination. I take away 0.5 point from the charger here as it allows the user to pick the 0.25A charge setting although it might have problems terminating the charge on that setting, I mean the charger itself should not allow batteries to be charged at that setting if there potentially would be a problem terminating the charge at that setting.

Charging batteries(3/5)

Besides charging batteries of different chemistries namely Lithium and NiMh batteries this charger also come with a few other functions:

Discharge / Charge cycle for NiMh

Discharge of Lithium via USB to charge mobile devices (only for batteries loaded into Bay 4 of the charger)

** For all of the times I did my evaluation of these functionality I wished that I had a fancy schmancy multimeter to capture all of the data coming from charger. Alas, I don't, I guess next time or if someone sends it to me to be evaluated.

Here is what I thought of them:

Charging Lithium bats

Since I did not really have any Lithium batteries, in order to be complete I decided to go out there and finally get myself a torchlight. I settled on the PD32 out of recommendation which came with a Lithium battery.

Charging Lithium plus NiMh

Both of the batteries terminated fine and I had no issues here, one improvement I can see here is if in future editions of this charger the basic lcd display in the VP1 can be incorporated somehow into this charger it would be great.

USB discharge function

I tried using the USB discharge function to power up my Samsung S3 and it seems to work as advertised, the only issue I seemed to have run into is that the connector of the USB seems a bit loose (it could very well have been my own cable as well, so I won't fault the charger for this) and it disrupted the charging multiple times. Charging is acceptable and not anything memorable. The only thing that would have liked or I found lacking is that if only the USB function would work also if connected to a AC source then it would be superb. Assuming that the unit will only be used as a powerbank seems to be a mis-step on the construction of the unit. Also, if this unit was meant to be used as a powerbank it would be nice if batteries of different chemistries could be used instead of just Lithiums. The other thing is that the way that the unit holds the battery should be more secure if you really want to use the USB discharge function to charge up your HP or other mobile devices. Below is shown the USB section of the charger.

Discharge and Charge

The discharge and charge function is another function offered by XP4 which differentiates it from most chargers in the market now. There aren't many at this price range that does that. The only compliant I have here is that it this cycle takes a long time as it does not allow you to choose the discharge current. The option of the charge current only takes effect during the charging stage.

Conclusion

Likes

The construction of the charger is great and feels solid

The charging works (at 0.5A) settings with NiMh and Liion batteries that I tried.

So-so

The verification code on the site seems a little too basic to be impressive.

You cannot choose the discharge current in the discharge-charge or the refresh function.

USB function only works with Lithium batteries and do not work with NiMh batteries.

Lacking the LCD display that came with VP1.

Dislikes

There are no temperature sensor which can do dT based termination

Charging at 0.25A charging is very spotty. Should not have allowed charging at this setting in my opinion

You cannot use the USB when the AC is connected to the device.

As I see it now, the charger seems to be a good initial effort of Xtar foraying into the NiMh charging sphere. Where does it fit ? Well I have arguably the most advanced NiMh system out there: NC2500 from SkyRC but where I see Xtar's XP4 shining is the convenience of just having one charger that can do all sorts of charging. If I just want to dump my batteries irrespective of type into it and not want anymore information beyond just when it's charging and when it's done XP4 fits the bill perfectly. Look for this charger if you already know something about your batteries and just want something that charges and works without you having to do a lot of settings before it starts charging. While it is not perfect, I am happy with this initial effort and do hope that they continue to improve on this charger. I am looking forward to see an improved version of this in the future.

Also, I don't think that this review is complete without at least a mention of the great PR that Xtar has. The person that communicated with me about this charger was responsive and promptly answered all of my questions. Although this was my first time getting a review set from them I was very impressed with they way they treated me. This is one thing that the company has right and judging from their FB page, they got the community around them happy too.

In the end what made me not give this charger full points is because of the rather limited usage of the USB plus the 0.25A charging current that is not disabled for NiMh

Overview

After a few weeks of driving with this item, I have a few problems with it. As posted before, I want to have this running 24/7, which it does..normally. I've gotten in to my car a few times, with the power still active on the car adapter, but it was off. Turning it on, put it back to it's recording state again. The next time it happened, I tried turning it on again, and I was greeted by the welcome screen and then nothing. The recording light was solid (not recording), and I could not get the display to come up and turned it off. I let it sit for a bit while I was driving and turned it back on again. This time it came up and started recording. This happened once more, and I believe it was overheating. I live in Pittsburgh, which by no means is the hottest city in the world. Those two particular days it was in the low to mid 80s. I will upload a rainy condition video today for all to see.

Video Quality

I've had a little bit of time to assess the video quality, and I would call it a little bit below acceptable. If I'm about 15 feet from a car I can read it's license plate. The video recordings that I get right now are 1280x480, with both cameras on the screen. So, that would be 640x480 each. I get anywhere from 20-30 fps with both cameras recording. 640x480 in my eyes is a bit underwhelming, however I believe it will work for any legal standpoint.

In the videos you can see that when it's raining, it is near impossible to see anything out the back window in the video.

Mounting

The mounting on the unit is also acceptable. I had a friend drive my car and said it fell off. He is a particularly aggressive driver, so making fast/abrupt turns will probably yield in the device coming off your mirror. I never had a problem with it coming off, as I'm not really an aggressive driver. However, I will probably end up modifying the device if I plan on keeping it to make a more solid mount.

Also, make sure you mirror is tight on the ball joint it is mounted to. This unit is somewhat heavy, and my mirror with gets knocked around due to its weight. It is fine when the drive is smooth, but when bumps come in to play I find myself consistently adjusting the mirror. Not really the fault of the unit, I just have to find a way to tighten my mirror.

Overview

I received the shipment promptly, well packaged. The box contains everything that was expected. I installed it on my mirror in my car and turned it on. I was greeted by a start screen and a start up noise. It then showed the dual video in the middle of the mirror. I went to use the manual, but the instructions are not well written and reference buttons that don't exist. I was able to fumble my way through the menu to set it up, except I could not get to the next menu. I decided to let it go while I test the quality of the camera. I decided I want the camera to record 24/7 in case anything decides to do anything to my car. You can have it turn off and on with the car by keeping it on a circuit that is switched by the ignition. I will post a video of various parts of my trip once I get to it. I have a very varied commute. I come from almost rural to very dense city, going through tunnels, in between tall buildings, and finally in a parking garage. So, the video should be very well rounded. I will get a night time video when I get the chance.

Screen

The screen is in the middle of the mirror, so if you have it on you can only see in the rear on the sides. Good thing you can turn it off! There is also two light indicators on the right of the screen one is red (top) and one is green (bottom). I noticed when the camera is recording that the green light flashes. I hope this won't be a distraction at night.

Mirror

When the screen is turned off (by pressing the down button), the mirror works very well during the morning hours. Have yet to test at night, but it seems like it has a polarized material on it.

Rating

So far I give the product 4/5.

I bough this after reviewing many, but after installing this the rare view mirror was dark, I hardly see anything.

And it says Card Error eventhough there is a card

Best Deals for T&J World Rearview Mirror DVR with Double lens Dual Swivel Camera

1. When it was connected to the power the first time, it froze at the welcome for 10 min. The only reason that I waited this long was because I thought it needed to be charged. But it was not responsive to any key I pushed. Finally I have to push the reset to make it work.

2. I recorded like 20 sec on my 16GB card just to test it. The next day, when I turned on the unit, it said the card was full. I have to delete the file which was less than 16 MB before it can work again.

3. The audio is horrible. You will hear constant static noise in the background and the voice it recorded is distorted beyond recongnition.

4. The plug that directly connected to the unit has its metal part exposed by at least 2 mm which is not only a safty harzard by any standard but also prevent the mirror to be set properly. You have to plug it to the upper side of the unit which could stuck to the ceiling if you have a small car. I will upload a photo later.

I didnt test vedio quality of the unit but the view angle seems ok. I like the concept of this product but it is really poorly constructed.

Honest reviews on T&J World Rearview Mirror DVR with Double lens Dual Swivel Camera

Great product for the money. Easy to install and use. Blends in perfectly with car interior. Almost impossible to spot, not like others I have seen where they are attached to the windshield and stick out like a sore thumb. View video on mirror or download to computer for viewing. Great video even at night with very little lighting. No more doubts as to what happened or who was at fault. Prompt service, received it in a matter of days. I personaly will be keeping an eye on this Seller for further needs without a doubt.

Hurricane Sandy hit the New York area in the fall of 2012, effecting over 200,000 of us who got caught up in the fury of the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. With power out for much of us in Lower Manhattan for days, it became time to take a a more serious look at emergency preparedness. Luckily I was well-prepared for the five-day power outages we went through, but one can never be prepared enough.

Etón BoostBloc 4000 is a small, compact device that is designed to serve as a portable backup battery pack and charger for smartphones and other USB-powered devices. It's deceptively compact, more than one might guess from the images here. At a total of 4000mAh, it's listed as offering "two full charges for most phones," but more on this later.

I'll list the subjective pros and cons found so far with this portable backup battery pack/charger for those looking for just the key points, then follow with some expanded details.

◆ High Points:

+ Compact; fits easily in your hand, 1.0"H x 2.2"W x 2.2"D, weighs ~3¾ ounces

+ Clean, minimalist design; fits into any work or professional environment

+ Micro-USB DC input; allow for connection to most USB chargers

+ LED charge indicators; four levels, activated by a shake

+ Micro-USB cable included; about 2-feet long

◆ Low Points:

May or may not live up to "two full charges" claim. See below.

◆ In Use:

The Etón BoostBloc 4000 comes packaged in a clear presentation box that's easy to open, and (luckily for us) not one of those clamshell packages. The included instructions are easy to follow. Mine arrived about ¾ charged, so I plugged it in to top it up. If it's fully drained the suggested charge time is five hours. The four blue LEDs will indicate the battery level, from 1 LED < 25% to 4 LEDs > 75%. To check the charge level, you just give it a quick shake. This seemed strange at first, but one gets used to it quickly, and there are no buttons to bump.

However... you may wish to check the power requirements of the smartphone or other device that you may want to charge. For example, my Samsung Galaxy S III (check the specs) comes with a 2100mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery, and if you quickly do the math, you'll quickly see that the 4000mAh rating of the BoostBloc 4000 is just under what it would take to give two full charges. In actual use I found that it gave about 1½ charges when the phone was left on, but slightly over 1¾ charges when the phone was turned off.

There are two other variations of this device: the Etón BoostBloc 2000, which is rated at 2000mAh, and the Etón BoostBloc 6600, which is rated at 6600mAH. Simply put, do the math before you make your choice, and you should be able to pick the right one for your needs.

In practical use, I found this Etón BoostBloc 4000 to be quite good for my needs when charging the Galaxy S III, as I was already aware of its mAh (milliamp hour) rating, so it lived up to my expectations. Also found that it had no problem putting a full charge on my Kindle Fire HD 8.9", even when I ran it down to about a 5% charge remaining. On a more practical side for emergency purposes, I plugged in my Goal Zero Luna USB LED Stick Light, a product of which I have a few, and it ran for days... I lost track as it was still providing light four days later.

◆ Summary:

The Etón BoostBloc 4000 has proven to be a solid performer that does what is expected. It's good enough that I'm considering adding the Etón BoostBloc 6600 to my arsenal of emergency supplies, as the higher-powered version also has two standard USB ports that can charge two devices simultaneously. Just be sure to first check your power requirements from the documentation of your smartphone or device so that you won't be disappointed. Simply put, this one is a real 5-star product, and one that's highly recommended.

I own a couple of different battery packs as I have a smartphone that loves to each it's charge up when I'm hiking/biking and away from an outlet. I own a couple other Eton products and decided I would try this block from them. I'm glad I did. I can throw this in my pack when out and about and keep my phone charged wherever I go. It's been very reliable and holds it's charge well when not using it for long periods of time. I've also charged my phone up to three times from 25% to 100% on a single charge. It's also one of the few external chargers like this that will charge my Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Very helpful if I'm out camping and I want to watch a movie that I've downloaded to the Kindle. I've had this for almost a year now and it stays in my backpack ready when I need it. I lost my first one somewhere and couldn't live without it so I bought a second one almost immediately. Worth the investment for me and has paid for itself several times by providing power in situations where I needed it.

I love my little BoostBloc, it's small enough to carry around in my bag everywhere I go. I can usually get a few charges out of it. Though I usually don't charge my phone all the way back up, just enough of a boost to get me through the rest of a long day. The bloc itself charges FAST, I plug it in and 30 minutes later all the little charge level lights are on indicating a full charge.

I will note that I do not think they are worth paying the full price for. Shop around, I got mine for MUCH cheaper than amazon lists them at.

This is a neat concept that keeps your car clutter free since you don't have the excess cord hanging down. The retract mechanism doesn't always fully function but it still works pretty good. I'm happy with it!

basically no one makes a car charger for the archos 504 or 604, unless you have the travel dvr adapter. this item is great, it fills the need for those of us using these archos players in the car for music, and is cheaper than the archos travel charger that you need the dvr adapter to use.

i'm giving it 4 stars, b/c it does what you expect it to, is well built, and has the ability for interchangable device tips. the only reason it didnt get 5 stars is b/c i think that is for things that go above and beyond your expectations.

After a lengthy amount of time researching and conversing with other motorcycle owners, I decided to step up to the plate and bought what these others believed to be the best, which was the YTX14-BS Yuasa battery. I own a 2003 Yamaha V-star 1100 and the size was a perfect fit. I was initially weiry of an after market product due to the slight differences in size [don't be]. I shopped many other websites, but I came back to my "old faithful" site, AMAZON.COM. The shipping time was better than their estimated amount of days, which put be back on my motorcycle quicker.

My first Yuasa AGM battery lasted 7 years! I used a float charter about 1 week per month. With this kind of service life, I gladly bought my 2nd one. Highly recommend the Yuasa maintenance free AGM batteries.

Best Deals for YUASA YTX14-BS Maintenance Free Battery

I bought an aftermarket battery from a great company but the battery went bad in 4 months. I should have stuck with the Yuasa but tried to save a few dollars. The battery arrived quicker than expected and has been trouble free. The orginial Yuasa lasted 5 years and hope to get that out of this one. By the best the first time around and you won't be disappointed!

Honest reviews on YUASA YTX14-BS Maintenance Free Battery

The YUASA YTX14-BS battery was delivered as indicated. The battery was easy to setup using the instructions that came with it. I installed on my Honda VTX 1300 and charged via a trickled charger. I checked the voltage after adding the acid and it was within specs before charging.

This is a great battery the second one I've had. The preparation for use involves putting the acid into the battery which comes with a sealed separate plastic container. The instructions are not as clear as they could be but make sure to read them complete before proceeding with putting the acid in the battery. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and just in case of any spillage I recommend wearing light surgical gloves. Once the battery is filled and sealed allow it should not need charging before installing. In this case a BMW K1200S. The stock Exide Battery lasted about 8 months and needed additional charging which the Yuasa never seems to need if you ride you bike regular basis.

Once the battery is installed it seems to be completely trouble free.
