I bought two sets of chargers. My brother and I have the same phone model (Stratosphere) so I gave him a set. Both of our car chargers don't work and isn't worth the hassle to return. His wall charger works when it wants, if he positions it right...The connection is loose.

Charges battery to full, then trickle charges to maintain. My 2005 GTO sits for weeks without being used. I hooked it up and it told me my battery voltage was to low. I bought this to use as a battery tender for our boat which doesn't get enough use. I built a mount out of ABS pipe so I could mount it above the boat lift. It works very well, it charges even when the sun is hidden behind clouds and I have not had any dead battery probems since. Having a visible indicator that it is working is a nice feature. It is a good quality product that doesn't seem to be bothered by the weather.

My only complaint is that they (the mfg) doesn't tell you which model to use for a given purpose. That would be helpful.

This unit was utilized outdoors to keep my collector car's battery charged. The car is temporarily stored outside under a heavy-duty car cover. I installed the Battery Tender 021-1163 5-Watt solar unit and placed it *outside* the vehicle on the car's windshield, then connected it to the battery.

I will say this: While it worked, it *did* keep the battery fully charged.

I had the unit for less than three months when I noticed the LED indicator had stopped working. When I inspected the unit, the small black plastic soldered connector (on the center of the back of the panel) had separated and fallen off. It was only held in place by some cheap glue and epoxy filler. When it fell off, that caused one of the delicate foil wires coming directly out of the solar panel to separate and break. The unit was no longer operational.

It's a cheap, poor design (manufactured in China). I paid $65 for this SINGLE unit, and it's NOT weatherproof at all. I inspected the instructions that came with it, and NOWHERE does it say that it's not weatherproof. One would assume the unit was weatherproof since it's designed for SOLAR power, but... you'd be wrong. It's not weatherproof. Apparently, it's made to be placed INSIDE the vehicle, on the car's dash... but for those of us who cover our cars outdoors, that doesn't work.

I disassembled and repaired the unit myself. It *DOES* work again, and now it's mounted inside my work truck out of the weather.

This is the second Battery Tender product that has failed on me. I have a Tender Jr. that stopped working for no apparent reason (and I couldn't fix that one, despite the fact that it never left my garage).

I will no longer be using or recommending their products.

I have since replaced this ONE unit with TWO Sunforce 5-watt panels (for the same $65 price). They are FULLY WEATHERPROOF and thus far, have not failed. I own a Sunforce 1-watt weatherproof unit that's been outdoors, hooked to my ATV battery. It has kept the battery charged and performs flawlessly since the day I received it, about a year ago. I suggest you try Sunforce brand chargers.

I'm giving it two stars only because it does still function and I was able to salvage it. But... no one should have to do that for a new product you've paid for. Epic battery charging failure here. Avoid this unit unless you want to mount it directly inside your vehicle, and I don't know anyone who's got the space in their car to mount something this size. My truck is a crew cab, so I have interior space for it. Most other's won't.

I purchased a Deltran Battery Tender JR 5 years ago as well as a motorcycle battery. Both the battery tender and the battery are still going strong 5 years later, this is not a typo! Yes, I said 5 years! Anyone who owns a motorcycle (especially a Harley) knows that you typically replace batteries every 2 years. Because of the performance of my battery tender Jr I decided to pick up this Deltran Solar Panel. I recently had to move my bike to a garage with no electricity and had to install the solar panel on the outside of the garage fully exposed to the elements. I've only had it about 2 months but I must say that this solar panel has performed above expectations. We have had some of the craziest weather on record in New Jersey. Warm days, cold days, heavy rains, 50 mph winds, 3 and 4 days at a time without sunlight. Yeah, Mother Nature has been sending us all kinds of craziness. So today I decided to go to my garage and see what kind of mess this solar panel was in. At the very least I expected to find the panel damaged by all the rain we've had. To my amazement it was working perfectly! It was 2 in the afternoon and cloudy due to all the rain and the solar panel LED was green indicating a fully charged battery. The panel has not been hit with any sunlight for 2 days yet it has been able to fully maintain my 5 year old battery. Another great product by Deltran.

UPDATE 3/28/2013: Here we are over a year after purchasing this Solar Panel and it continues to work great. It has been through some of the worst storms on record here in the East Coast without sustaining damage. My "very old" motorcycle battery continues to be maintained. The bike started easily even after 6 months of sitting in storage.

I bought this item to keep the battery on my car in shape. The car has sat since December and had a dead battery. The battery was fully charged in a day and I am very happy with how well it works. I would give it 5 stars but the cables are very short. I have a Mini Cooper with the battery in the trunk and the cable could not reach the front seat, if I had to connect in the engine bay I would be forced to buy the extension.

I'll try to get this right, but some of the background info regarding Optima history may be off by a year or two.

First: 4 star rather than a 5 star rating. The warranty would need to match the longer warranties offered by others, and quality control tightened to earn five stars. Performance is normally excellent, so why not offer a longer warranty?

Gates Tire and Rubber invented/ designed/ developed the Optima and Genesis AGM batteries in the '80's/ early '90's. As I understand things, the Optima was intended for rugged/ abusive applications requiring the highest starting current, while the Genesis was intended for more sedentary uses and maximized charge/ volume by using flat plates. Both minimized venting and maintenance requirements.

The Optima brand was spun off to a Swedish company but the batteries continued to be manufactured in Aurora, CO. Johnson Controls purchased the Optima brand in ~2000 and continues to own the brand. All mfg was moved from Aurora to a suburb of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, around late 2007. Genesis was spun off to Enersys, which used YAUSA to mfg these in China, Mexico and who knows where; I believe their premium Genesis EP series are made in Warrensburg, MO.

Optima Red Top battery design changed sometime in 2007. Apparently the glass mat was often pinched/ crimped leading to premature shorting and failure. Ratings of the 34/78 Red Top was reduced from 55 Ah to 50 Ah, the CCA rating remained at 800, and curiously, the warranty was reduced from 3 yr free replacement + 3 yr prorated, to 3 yr free replacement + 0 yr prorated. This roughly corresponded with moving the production to the Monterrey suburb, although a number of the newer style batteries were still made in Aurora in 2007. From my experience with a number of both batteries, the older Red Top 34/78, 55 Ah batteries were either the very best or very worst depending on the luck of the draw. All seem to lose Voltage faster than the newer design, but they were still much better than conventional flooded lead acid batteries, and generally tested above 10.5 V 2.5 years after mfg. If allowed to run down while on the pallet and then charged, these frequently would experience thermal runaway unless charged at a low rate, and if that problem was not incurred, they would frequently charge up only to fail open after, say 15 seconds at a 400 or 500 A draw. Optima apparently was aware of the problem yet did not tell customers. Optima sold a number of these for military applications, too, but it seems did nothing to correct the problem; nice to know when someone is shooting at you. But those that sat on the pallet for a long time of the older-design and that passed the high current load test seemed to surpass the performance of the newer design. Some batteries that failed early or lost Voltage quickly were found to be missing a vent cap. (Missing caps are rare, but they sometimes aren't there and are not noticed unless the cover is pried off. Optima may not even believe this.) Great quality control for a premium product.

All but about 5 or 50 batteries of the newer design left on the pallet for 4 years tested at 11.0 V or higher, so those claiming leakage should look for a electric system parasitic draw rather than blaming the battery; newer design charged Optimas just don't normally lose Voltage in a couple of months.

Because of their lower internal resistance, Optimas can accept a higher rate of charge and require less energy to fully charge.

Normal operation

Keep the battery at or above 12.5 V as much as possible to minimize sulfation. Spiral wound AGM batteries, while more resistant to sulfation, will sulfate and reversing it is tougher than with flooded lead acid batteries. NEVER allow the battery to fall below 10.5 V; recovery will be tough if below that and irreversible damage may result if left below that Voltage for long. Red Tops are not meant for deep cycling, which means these are intended to be charged soon after starting the engine.

A major cause of warranty claims for AGM batteries, not just Optimas, is early sulfation due to failure to fully charge the battery, which many charging system in late model vehicles fail to due in order to improve fuel economy so ever little. GM vehicles may be more likely to fully charge AGM batteries because their charging systems are reportedly set to a Voltage higher than other vehicle manufacturers; their OEM Delco batteries have larger spacing requiring higher Voltage to fully charge. Many battery chargers also fail to adequately overcharge the battery whereby the battery undergoes the full recombinant reactions restoring full performance. But it is also important not to overcharge the battery such that loss of electrolyte and overheating occur.

Best non-commercial battery charger for Optimas I have used so far: Interacter Inc. (and mfg in the USA), seems to give better end performance than CTEK 7002's. Both gave better results than Vector chargers, which performed okay on Optimas 11.5 V or higher, but the Interacter and CTEK would charge Optimas that had fallen to just a few Volts without having to resort to wiring the Optima battery in parallel with a battery already at 12+ Volts to fool the charger into charging, (Optima's recommended procedure for charging a depleted battery). Also, Interacter seemed to give about the right amount of overcharging. (Many smart chargers see the low Voltage/ low internal resistance as a failed battery and thus refuse to start charging.) Please do not try charging a battery less than 12 V below freezing; warm the battery to above freezing first, and do not forget a discharged battery allowed to freeze will likely suffer irreparable damage. If hot spots develop or venting occurs while charging, stop charging. Resume at a low rate after the battery has cooled. A battery that has been left setting for a long time at a low Voltage should be charged at a very low rate for the majority of charging. This can be followed by a high rate charge, say 50 A, for several minutes while ensuring no over heating or venting, to help restore performance. High-rate charging may open additional surface area that had been heavily sulfated and reduce grid point discharging (?).

All Optimas are not created equal. When performing high current load tests to evaluate the CCA ratings, I have seen 5 of 7 fully charged batteries from the same layer on a pallet fail open within seconds, and 13 of 44 on that pallet fail open, only to see none fail from other pallets of the same lot. Some batteries left uncharged on the pallet for several years perform as well as a factory fresh battery, and batteries left on the pallet for less than a year fail open during testing. Why? Do not expect an answer from Optima.

Charging Yellow Top(deep cycle/ starting) Optima batteries

Surprisingly, the Yellow Top batteries seem to lose Voltage a little more quickly than Red Top, but still both are less than flooded lead acid batteries. Now for charging, it is assumed the Voltage is at or above 10.5 V and that the battery has been in recent use. (Remember, never allow the Voltage to drop below this or expect the worst.) For a 50 Ah Yellow Top, charging can be fast, say 30 to 50 A, until reaching the Zero dV/dt, (Zereo Delta), point, at which reduce charging to 1 to 5 A and continue, charging an additional 3 to 5 Ah after reaching Zero Delta. New batteries may take 30 minutes for this last stage, while older batteries, 2 or 3 hours. This may extend battery life from 200 deep cycles to deep 500 cycles. NOTE: This is a general charging guideline and it is the responsibility of the reader/ user to ensure safe operation at all times. If using this charging technique, first review research articles found by Googling "national renewable energy lab, Optima battery, charging".

I hope this will help those who already have an Optima battery or thinking about purchasing one. Please share your experience if you have some better ideas and techniques.

I bought this battery from a local Optima dealer on January 2008. It died on August 2009.

Since it comes with a three year warranty, I tried to get it serviced under the warranty by calling the Optima 1-800 number. Customer service agent was very rude and kept telling me I'd have to pay a fee in order to get my battery serviced.

At this point though, expensive compared to the "el cheapo" brands you may find at walmart, but worth it knowing it's got the juice to get it done.

I bought this battery in May 2009. It just suddenly failed Dec 2010. Just over 1 1/2 years. I originally bought the battery for my Mustang because of the early reviews and the 800 amp capacity. Perfect for my car. Now, researching why the battery died so suddenly and quickly I read on another site that it really is a good, powerful battery just you have to disconnect it when you're not driving so the trickle doesn't drain the battery. The stock battery that was with my car when I bought it lasted over 3 years (plugged in the whole time.) I read enough about Optima's poor customer service and not honoring their warranty that I'm not even going to bother trying to get warranty service thru them. I checked with the local Ford dealership, a mechanic friend and a rep at Advanced Auto Parts and they all agreed that it sounded like the battery was the issue ("a short inside the battery.") In fact, after I described what happened to the Advanced Auto Parts rep and he recommended getting a new battery, I told him the problem battery was an Optima and he called across the store to another worker, "Hey, Carl! I got another customer here with your favorite battery!"

I highly recommend that anyone avoid the Optima batteries. They will give you great starting power in your car, but they appear to have a habit of dying suddenly and without warning about 18 months in. Mine was great the last time I drove, then after not driving for 2 days, I got in the car and the battery was totally dead. (And I'd gotten back at night the last time, so I'm sure the lights were off they shine right on my garage door.)

I'd only recommend this battery to someone who just needed a battery to connect to as needed. The rest of the time, it could just sit there. Or if you live in a cold climate and are okay with changing car batteries out every year.

I bought my first Optima battery for my '96 GMC C1500 with a vortec 5700 in 1998. This battery has been through all kinds of weather from New Mexico to 4 years in Germany, a couple years in Seattle, and the last 4 years in TX. I have drained this battery dead at least 4 times and it recovered/recharged every time except for this last weekend. My truck has been parked for most of the last month since the a/c is out and the temps her in TX have been 100+ for the last 2 months. I finally killed it for good... after 13 "short" years of life. I have replaced the batteries in all 3 of my vehicles with Optima's since then and will be buying another Optima for my truck. I'm sure this battery will outlast the truck this time. I'm SOLD!!!!

Thinking about buying another iPhone charger?

1) Be careful to buy one that actually works (seriously). Apple has proprietary tech that each manufacturer licenses allowing the charger to communicate with the phone. Some cheapos don't incorporate the tech and wind up not actually charging the phone (for example, see this: USB Cable + Wall Charger for Apple Iphone 3g Ipod Touch Nano )

2) This charger is built out of (comparatively) high-quality materials and can hold up to being shoved in luggage/backpacks/purses/whatever

3) The cable can be used just by itself (has a USB end that goes into the wall plug)

4) The plug is ridiculously ginormous. I guess that's why it swivels, so this big hog can fit in a power strip regardless of plug orientation. (I assume they saved money making it so unnecessarily big.)

5) The connector firmly connects to the apple device (again quality build)

6) iPhone chargers are pricey, this is one of the cheapest that is built well

7) This one is eligible for Amazon Prime shipping

This is the second one of these I'm buying, because of price/value/reliability. I have both nicer and cheaper ones. Despite it's faults, this one seems "just right". 1 star off because the plug is so big.

I bought this charger for my iPod touch 4. I needed a wall charger for our trip to Europe. It worked perfectly! It charges the iPod much faster than the USB. I'm not sure if the faster charge affects battery life, though. Anyway, with a European plug adapter this charger worked just as well with Europe's 110 volt power as it does here. As a bonus the USB cord that comes with it seems to be of an even better quality than the Apple cord.

I'm comparing this car charger for my iPhone 4 to the Belkin car charger which works extremely well. I bought this on a whim as I needed to charge my iPhone 4 in the car. It charges extremely slow and then roughly 6 months after purchase it heats my iPhone up so hot that the phone stops charging. It just shows the plugged in icon instead of charging icon. I don't have much experience with Rocket Fish accessories but this is by far a failure in my honest opinion.

I purchased this battery to replace one that had stopped working in our home alarm system. It was shipped quickly and was a whole lot cheaper than buying it from the security company. When it arrived, I tried to install it and found out the connectors on top didn't fit. I was pretty frustrated and responded to the seller asking for a refund. They responded within hours and explained there are two different types of terminals for this battery. The F1 terminal type which is .187 inches wide, and the F2 which is .250 inches wide. This battery is the F2 version which is the wider version. Since I needed the F1 (.187" wide) they offered to send me terminal adapters (small pieces that slide over the existing terminal and can convert it to the other type of terminal) at NO CHARGE. I agreed that this was an acceptable solution and received the adaptors in 2 business days. I was very impressed at their commitment to make things right and their speed for communicating.

Product arrived exactly a week after ordered via UPS. The shipping material was very professional, using thick box and peanuts with all the caution on the box label for the mail handler. I don't know who the credit should go to, ITL or UPG? ITL is the middle-man, and the shipment came directly from UPG and shipped within one day (according to UPS tracking). The processing between Amazon, ITL and UPG took a week. The product was shipped directly from a local UPG warehouse (locally to where I live), which made the packaging very professional and shipment fast.

The battery does have larger terminals than the older one I had, but no worries for me. I just replaced the existing lugs and crimped on the right size. But, this could be troublesome for others who do not have the right tools, materials, and skills to do this.

The battery appears brand new and fully charged. My alarm LED went away as soon as I replaced it with this battery. I would say, I give credit for ITL for selecting the manufacturer (UPG) directly and not another reseller or distributor that could have shipped me a battery that has been laying on the shelf for years.

This is a great battery, very powerful, I use it as a backup for my home alarm system. The battery arrived in less than a week with free shipping from Amazon, like any new battery, this one was not fully charge (depending on how long has been sitting on the shelf), however it took less than 12 hours for it to be fully charged by my alarm system.

Update Nov 16th: This is awkward. I ordered another 1280 (from a different company) and the UPS is still dead (which I've never had happen to me). I apologize to eComElectronics and change my rating from 1 to 5 (the 'Dead' in the title refers to the UPS, not the battery).

This battery is sold as a UB1290 and specifically states it is 9 amp, when it is actually 8.5 amp. It seems to be common to lie about the specs of SLA batteries since the other pair I bought from another Amazon seller ended up being 8 amp at a higher price than these, and also claimed to be 9 amp. Sure, it's not a huge difference, so why lie about it?

I actually did not get this as a UPS replacement battery, I got it to use with a second wildlife camera to extend the time between battery changes and also to save money. I used it for one season so far & it works good.

This car charger failed to work at all. It was the correct device for my phone and in a brand new car with three different power source outlets, none of them fit this charger such that all the contacts were made...I guess the 99cent price should have been a give away... 1 star is one too many!

I'm a little stunned by the bad reviews. I couldn't disagree more. This is a great scanner. For the roughly 100 bucks, you really get a lot.

It's handheld, which means it travels nicely. It's great for road trips and can keep you in the loop on weather, accidents, and umm, "other" police activities. It scans CB, FRS/GMRS/MURS and HAM bands which covers pretty much all of the individual use bands. The first two (CB, FRS/GMRS/MURS) are pretty useful on trips too.

It's rechargeable, and uses standard AA Ni-MH batteries (included) and you can recharge the batteries right in the scanner from a USB port. You can charge while it's on. Also, just in case it matters, you can run it directly from the USB port without any batteries installed at all! Of course, in a pinch you can always use regular non-rechargeable AA batteries which are pretty much the most common batteries in America. There's a switch inside the battery compartment to tell the scanner what kind of batteries you have so that it won't try to recharge regular batteries. (I know, too much time on batteries but I can't help it. A scanner's no good if you can't turn it on!)

There are some nice storage features for storing "found" stations and you can program them in manually too, if you know the frequency. You can name all the stations as well. Additionally, there's are banks of per-programmed frequencies for different uses (fire, police, CB, etc.) to allow you to get started right away. (If you're looking for frequencies just google "scanner frequencies" and the city or area you live in. Pretty simple...)

But really, it's connecting to the PC that has me won over. *All* of the settings can be accessed through the PC software available from the website. (The website also includes the *manual* , drivers, and firmware updates. The software isn't all that sexy to be sure, but it's plenty functional! It's a lot easier to use than typing into the scanner itself. It allows you to save different configurations in separate files so you can have, for instance, a file for Topeka, and another one for Miami. Again, a really nice feature if you're on the road and have a laptop.

Cons:

You can't actually control the scanning itself from the computer. Not a big deal but the function might be kinda cool. My biggest complaint is that there is not a standing battery indicator. You only get notification when the batteries get low, but you have no idea when that might be. It's just a minor annoyance... maybe it'll get fixed in a firmware update?

I have a GRE PSR-310 scanner that I like, a lot. However this Bearcat came with a programming cable and free programming software is available from Uniden, Sure it's missing the 800MHZ band, trunking and stores fewer channels, but for the price this thing can't be beat, sensitivity is on par with the GRE and volume and sound quality is ALMOST as good, however this Uniden is less than half the size, and much, much lighter, yet feels a tad more solid than the GRE.

I know I'm comparing apples and oranges here, but again, for the price, you'll be hard pressed to find a better scanner. I slightly prefer GRE's "Object Oriented Scanning" due to the flexibility it affords frequency setups, but I'll find myself using this Uniden a lot more because of the form factor and the included programming software/cable.

Now I have to go spend another $60 on a cable and software on the GRE so I can program the thing via my PC.

Uniden, you have spoiled me.

This is my first radio scanner and I'm very satisfied. Living at about 80 meters above sea level near the South Coast of the island of Curacao I'm receiving loud and clear communication from the North coast (Punto Fijo and Coro and enviroment)of Venezuela. Distance is approximately 120 km.

The only thing I have is that I would be very glad if someone would be so kind to send me the unzipped files of BC125AT_USB_driver.zip so that I will be able to install the drivers and update my scanner. I've been trying for hours but did not succeed and I have nobody who can help me with this problem. I'll send my email address to the one who can help me really. Thanks in advance.

I got a BC72XLT a couple years ago, and never regretted that purchase. I saw the features of this radio and decided it was worth the upgrade. I think it's definitely worth it for someone looking for a few more features.

Alpha Tags so you know what you're listening to, you don't have to memorize what frequencies are

USB programming MUCH easier to program new frequencies. You can also back up everything to a file, so you can change the entire setup of the banks really quickly. Nice if you go on vacation, because you can enter all the new frequencies on the computer, back up the old setup and apply the new setup. When you get back, it takes less than a minute to put the old setup back on.

USB charging you don't need a special AC charger for the radio, it can charge from a computer or USB charger. If you plan on using it at home or in one place a lot, I would definitely suggest getting a USB charger (maybe with a mini USB plug already on it). This helps to get it away from the computer, which can cause interference. It comes with 2 rechargeable AA batteries, which seem to last maybe 8 hours on a charge. Backlight and frequent transmissions could reduce this, but I have been very happy with battery life.

Military Frequencies one of the main things that convinced me to get this radio. I have to admit I haven't heard anything except the UHF from airport towers, but I will be around more UHF traffic soon and I expect to get a lot more from this.

Better Programming you can set delay specifically to each channel. You can also set a temporary lockout, which only locks a channel out until you turn off the radio. Useful for localized interference.

Backlight Options you can set the backlight to come on only with squelch, so it is off until it picks up a signal.

DND Mode this stands for "do not disturb." This means that the "close call" or priority modes will only do their checks when scanning. Once it picks up a channel, it will not interrupt the channel to do those checks. This is really nice, because even the short pauses to do those checks can make you miss key information in a transmission.

Close Call memory you can store the frequencies found in close call mode to a small bank for later review or scanning.

Large banks 50 channels in each bank. Sometimes I have to combine smaller categories into one bank, but overall it is good to have plenty of space in a bank. Also good to have more frequencies overall.

Dedicated Weather Function Fn-3 accesses weather radio modes, nice to have when there is bad weather. There is also a weather function to scan weather radio in the background for alerts.

Easier service search When in service search mode, each service is treated like a bank and can be turned on or off. This is much more intuitive and lets you only choose the ones you are interested in. These are: Police, Fire/Emergency, Ham, Marine, Railroad, Civil Air, Military Air, CB Radio, FRS/GMRS/MURS (handheld civil radios), and Racing. You can also set custom ranges.

There are other features, but these are the ones I found most useful.
