This is identical to the charger supplied by the Pride scooter company for my wife's Go-Go mobility scooter, and at a significantly lower cost. The previous one we had lasted for over 5 years. I would have rated this model higher except that you need to be careful connecting and disconnecting the plug from the charger body.

If you yank on it, you could break the plastic tabs that hold the socket inside the charger body. These tabs gave way on my previous charger, and the socket and wires began to come out of the charger body each time I disconnected the plug/cable, and I could find no way to repair it.

The charger part of this combo is fine. The retractable cable however is another story. It does not move freely and sticks often when trying to retract. I purchased another one from this seller and it works much better. Luck of the draw I guess. Charges fine, but then my other cord did too...

I have tried it on two different applications even though this one does show a voltage output my battery is still not up to snuff even after connected for two weeks

The unit I bought was purchased from Griot's Garage, which is this item rebranded. It is thin enough (3.5" wide) that I could keep it in my Mazda RX-7 between the seat and storage bins. I used it many times over the last 5 years and it seems to be holding up great. I put it in my finance's car around a year and a half ago. Even she has commented on how often she has used it; not for herself but for coworkers and customers at where she works.

The only criticism I've found is that the cables are a little short at 23" long. Not unusable but I'd like them longer. I just purchased the "660" version of the Jump-N-Carry, the JNC660 for my truck due to the 46" long cables and a larger peak amp rating. I've never had it fail to turn over a vehicle, but I thought it may help with the V8.

BTW I attached two strips of heavy duty velcro (the hook side) on each side of the back of the unit. This prevents the unit from sliding around in her truck.

For Christmas I wanted to buy my parents an auto battery starter that would work without them having to get out of their car, since they live in the Rocky Mountains where it can stay below freezing. My husband informed me because of their elevation, climate and they drive an SUV they would need something with a lot my amps; so with his help on line we found the jumpstart 4000. Dad was so excited to get it, he opened it before Christmas and had it out during our visit starting quads that had been sitting out in the snow and not running for quite some time. Then wouldn't you know it our Ford F-250 truck would not start one morning, after a -9 degree F night, when we were taking our one year old to the Urgent care with a 103.7 fever. We grabbed the Jumpstart and the the truck was up and running in minutes. By the time we were headed home from our Rocky Mt.Colorado trip the Jumpstart had been used nearly everyday, even to jump the neighbors snow plow. We were all very impressed with Jumpstart 4000 and knew we made a good purchase.

The only short-coming to this unit is the 23" inch cable leads. These units will out perform "ANY" other unit on the market today and especially the styles that you can buy from the big dept stores. Do any of those "other" units come with a certificate to repair or replace their unit for $25.00? Mine did when I bought it back in 1998 and the unit I have is still working to this day... I believe its now $50.00 to send it in for a one time exchange! An "internal" charger is built into this unit so you don't have to deal with attaching an external charger like some brands have out there to charge it, and who doesn't own an extension cord? I do use my unit commercially and if you can safely hook this unit up to the correct leads on the battery your boosting than this unit will not let you down! Buy it and you'll love it! Note" The 660 Model has 46" inch lead cables and is a larger more powerful unit but. this unit will get the job done if you don't need the longer cable leads.. Enough said! Good Luck, Mike

I have had this in my warehouse for quite a few years. This unit has started everything from a honda civic to a completely dead 18 wheeler. the 18 wheeler took about 7 or 8 minutes. I have since retired and took only one thing with me. The only thing bigger than an 18 wheeler would be the space shuttle.

Came out of my Colorado home to find my Jeep dead. No lights, no click, no nothing.

(Yes, you CAN ride a mountain bike in the snow!) Decided this was a good time to order that portable jump starter I wish I had on vacation 3yrs ago, when I locked my keys in the car overnight in the accessory position...don't ask. The people at the hotel came out with a jump starter: small, weak and totally useless. But it was still a good idea and I wanted one.

Fast forward to winter of 2010. I did a little research, came to Amazon and discovered Clore products. I was worried the Jeep had been inactive for too long, now going on 2 weeks, but she was in a garage so I went for it. I decided the cheaper model might not have enough power, and the more expensive 660 seemed a bit too powerful for my needs. So I got the middle model JNC4000.

Ten days later it arrived. Out of the box I pushed the button to check the battery life and it read between 12 and 13 volts. Having read a couple stories about over charging, I decided it would do no harm to ignore Clore's advise to charge it for 24 hrs before use, and simply try to start my Jeep with the power it arrived with.

True, the short cables are a bit of a drag, I would rather set it on the ground than try to precariously balance it somewhere under the hood, but after the sweet sound of my engine turning over I didn't care about the short cables anymore!! (My jeep beeps when I leave the keys in the ignition, I wish it did that when I left that darn overhead light on!!)

No problem that I have to use an extension cord to charge it, I have PLENTY. They said re-charge it after 2 or 3 months of storage, so I have already taped a piece of paper to the back of it to write down when I recharge it. My only concern is that ideally it should be stored no lower than 50 degrees, and for the time that I am in Colorado how will it work out stored in the back of my jeep in the middle of winter? Decided to keep it in the house and take it every time I leave, kind of a drag but maybe I will wrap it in a thermal blanket so I can feel comfortable leaving it in the vehicle.

I am VERY happy I purchased this and have no regrets.

The pieces of this kit were not labeled as to function. Although some pieces are intuitive, we don't know what to do with others (like one with a USB plug on one end and a speaker plug on the other). The speakers works well, but the charger that plugs into the wall does not charge the unit. The car charger does work, and we're able to use our radio converter to play the MP3 player through our car speakers. The case helps keep the MP3 player from sliding out of your hand, and the headset and USB connector for the computer are extras since we received these parts with the unit.

Best Hobart 500539 Trek 180 Battery-Powered or 115-Volt Corded Portable Deals

Hobart 500539 Trek 180 Battery-Powered or 115-Volt Corded Portable MIG Welder
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

I was on the fence for a while as to if the Trek 180 was really worth the money and would actually serve my needs. I worried that the duty cycle and battery life might make this welder more of a novelty than a useful welder.

My primary reason for considering the Trek was it's off the grid welding capability. My family and friends are in to sand cars and nearly every trip some one breaks some thing and the car is down for the rest of trip. Usually a simple weld job would get the car back in to play and save the trip.

Given the cost of fuel alone to haul a trailer full of toys to the dunes the cost of the Trek 180 is irrelevant! Nothing worse than going for a week long trip and having a break down on the first day.

I considered a corded 110 welder and borrowed a Lincoln 140 to see if I could run if off my Honda 2000i generator (great little geni), but it was not near enough power neither was the 2500 watt inverter in the toyhauler. So a corded 110 welder was out. Plugged in to garage the Lincoln 140 was able to make some decent welds on my buggy frame, but had to cranked up to 95% of it's power to make an acceptable weld.

Well I took the plunge and ordered the Trek 180 any way.

When it arrived I lifted it out of the packaging and it was smaller and lighter than I expected. The out side of the Trek is made like a military style hard polymer ribbed case, very robust, I am surprised Hobart does not mention this in there description.

After charging the Trek for 2 hours per the instructions prior to the first use, I set it up at power level 6 of 10 and welded a 4" piece of exhaust tubing to a 1/4" flange. On battery power only I was able to weld all the way around with out the charge status light changing at all. The weld was better than I expected, very little splatter and very nice bead after knocking the flux off. I did not even have to grind the weld to pretty it up!

This was another concern I had, how well flux core welds would end up looking, would I need to get a tank of gas to make a pretty welds?

Other cheap flux core machines from Harbor some thing made ugly though functionable welds and I was not about to spend this kind of money for those kind of results. As already stated the Trek makes surprisingly nice welds and I am no longer considering purchasing a tank.

Back to welding, I took a couple of scrap pieces of 3/16 thick steal 6" long and welded them from one end to the other. I did this a couple of times and then turned the Trek to full power to see what it would do. Welding over the top of the previous welds I made it about 5" sweeping side to side about 3/4" wide before the low voltage light came on and I had to stop.

I was able to weld the first project and the test pieces all on one charge. No question at all I could repair any of the break downs I have had on a single charge!

The next day I decided to see how well the Trek would do plugged so I used two more scraps of 3/16 by 1" by 6" and started welding set to power level 8 I made several passes taking some breather breaks and found I could weld about three times as long while plugged in only loosely respecting the recommended duty cycle.

On battery the machine performs as advertised, but while plugged in the Trek welds hotter and for at least as long as as any other 110 welder I have used.

The Trek 180 does many things well an is with out question the most powerful 110 welder you can get, while you are not going to be able to open a fabrication shop using this machine, you will be able to most every thing the average DIY guy needs to do. This machine is quality!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Absolutely outstanding welder. Choose your wire carefully as it seems to perform

much better with .30 wire and smaller. Simply plan on making multiple passes and

you will find that the welds are very good quality. I wouldn't bother setting it

up with gas as it's endurance simply isn't worth the trouble of all the extra baggage.

It really shines as a flux core wire emergency welder which can take on some of the

fieldwork usually reserved for big gas powered welder. Just having it sitting in

my work truck gives me such peace of mind as it can certainly tack together most

equipment problems well enough to finish the day and then properly repair it. Has

saved me many thousands in just the few months I've owned it.

I have found I can get a 1/2" weld about 4-6" long on a single charge. Takes a bunch

of passes and cleaning between them due to the light wire but we're only talking about

15 to 20 minutes of time to put a down machine back to work at least though the end of

the day.

I can't recommend this welder strongly enough.

Best Deals for Hobart 500539 Trek 180 Battery-Powered or 115-Volt Corded Portable

hi! i bought this welder because i needed a portable welder that i could use without being plugged in. i live in a 3rd floor apartment in brooklyn, so i need to weld outside and i don't have access to power when i'm out on the sidewalk. it was a toss up between this, the broco goweld, and the readywelder, but this won out because the other two aren't adjustable for voltage (unless adding or removing batteries counts) and with the other two, you will need to provide the batts and a way to charge them, and carry them. this one is a little more expensive, but i think it's worth it. in fact if you don't already have 2 or 3 other batteries around and a charger this might even end up being cheaper!!

i just took it out and welded the exhaust back together on my car. since it's fairly thin metal i had it turned down low, i probably did about 10 minutes worth of actual welding and the battery didn't die. the welds look good (for a beginner trying to use flux-core on thin, rusty exhaust pipe) and the welder performed well.

all in all, awesome. i'm glad i finally bought it!! i would recommend it highly.

**one thing hobart missed though: since it's marketed toward off-road types and can be charged with a power inverter, why not also have a 12volt charging port? it has two 12-volt batteries inside so it probably would have been pretty easy to charge them directly from automotive power. instead, to charge in your car you need to get a power inverter to convert your car's 12 volts DC to 120 volts AC so the welder can covert the 120 volts AC to 12 volts DC to charge the 12 volt batteries... even still, this welder is great so far and i plan to get a power inverter so i can charge it up where ever i bring it.

if you're on the fence, just do it!! you won't regret it!!

Honest reviews on Hobart 500539 Trek 180 Battery-Powered or 115-Volt Corded Portable

I recently bought this welder and I absolutely love it, its portability! I'm a weekend DIY (do-it-yourselfer) guy, and I have been welding for about two years now--so I don't ever get involved with anything more than 1/4" thick metal at the most. Anyway, I really like the option to be "off the grid" and being able to haul this welder anywhere (e.g., camping, four-wheeling, to a friend's house for a quick-fix welding job for them, in a parking lot, etc.). It is extremely well made, durable, and easy to setup. My first fabrication project involved upgrading the wheels (casters) on a Craftsman "creeper" that I have had forever. I wanted casters with brake knobs on them, so when I am laying underneath a vehicle using the creeper I would not roll around when I am wrenching on a tough bolt. The problem was the upgrade 3" casters with brakes that I bought from a local Harbor Freight store could not spin freely; the larger casters were hitting the creeper's frame rail. So I welded tiny, rectangular 16-gauge steel plates to cover over the existing four corner holes for a total of eight weld points (4 plates on each side of the frame), then drilled new holes just to the inside of where the previous holes were so the casters could then spin freely from their new location. The short version is the welder performed flawlessly, with good penetration, a nice even weld puddle, and sharp-looking welds, even at lower voltage using .030 E71T-GS wire. Once you get your settings dialed in for the job at hand, you won't want to stop welding with this machine.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Hobart 500539 Trek 180 Battery-Powered or 115-Volt Corded Portable

This is a very well built machine. I purchased this machine to be able to weld off grid for small emergency repairs, It does a fantastic job for that task. I have welded with it just on a 50' ext cord also and it welded great.

I have only used it for flux core use so I cannot comment on its ability to weld with gas.

I would recommend this machine to anybody needing needing to weld off grid for small repairs or can only use 110 v.

I purchased a Ramsond charge controllers about 3 years ago and it has preformed flawlessly since then. I have it connected to a 5 watt solar panel that keeps the battery charged in a 10KW Diesel generator. It keeps the battery charged at all times. The exact same battery kept going down after charging with a battery charger almost every three weeks. It's worth the price of the charge controller just to have peace of mind and no trouble. The battery has never gone down in 3 years! I also have a 20 watt Ramsond (black)solar panel and it produces far more power than the 20 watt (blue)solar panel by another manufacturer. Based on my experience with Ramsond, solar panels and charge controllers, Ramsond has products that are superior in quality. I have solar panels by 9 different manufacturers and charge controllers by 5 different manufacturers and some out-perform others. My main house solar setup has been running flawlessly since 2005. I have 4 independent solar setups for different projects that I work on. I will buy Ramsond products in the future! For people that have had problems with these charge controllers, this is my suggestion: Disconnect the solar panel from the charge controller, but leave the battery connected. Leave it disconnected for a few hours and then reconnect. Once the charge controller recognizes your setup, it will never give you any trouble whatsoever.

Honest reviews on Ramsond SunShield 12V 12 Volt 8A 8 Amp Solar Charge Controller

As indicated by another reviewer this controller leaks current back into the solar panels at night (or when an RV is parked in a garage) and discharges the batteries. It is worthless in a situation where one needs to maintain a charge in batteries, as in an RV.

I do not recommend this controller.

It works fine for charging; charging and floating at the correct voltages.

However, at night it leaks power back to the solar panel which discharges the battery.
