Two problems keep me from rating this very inexpensive car USB charger higher:

1. The charger that I received doesn't appear to be the same charger pictured on the product description. (eg., completely different molded body, glass tube fuse instead of plastic-encased fuse.)

2. It won't charge my iPhone properly. After some testing with a multimeter, it seems the output is close to 6 VDC, despite being labeled as 5 VDC +/5%, which would be a max. voltage of 5.25 VDC.

Overall, it's not worthless. Other less sensitive USB-powered products may be able to be charged by this.

I bought two of these, both fell apart (literally) within several weeks of infrequent use. Even when they worked, they never worked reliably and required connstant twisting and turning and pushing to get a connection. The whole thing looked like they were put together by a child (no, I'm just talking figuratively and not implying what you think I'm implying about Chinese labor, which is a whole different issue). A gentle squeeze, the thing goes squeaky and shaky. Unlike most other car adapters, this one doesn't have a snugly fit into the cigarette lighter. It is just so wobbly everywhere. Avoid such low quality products to keep your life sane.

An update: I subsequently purchased a few Universal Mini USB Car Charger Adapters offered by Eforcity (search Amazon or eBay). What a difference. The Universal Mini USB Car Charger Adapters is exactly what this product should be made alike. Solid, compact, and reliable. Both are inexpensive Chinese made products, but one is total junk and other a gem.

Pros: Inexpensive and eforcity is quick to ship. Fuse, easy to disassemble(easy to modify to work with new iPhone 3G/Samsung Moment/Rant). Works to charge a lot of USB connected devices(Phones,PDA,older iPods,Bluetooth wireless adapters, etc...).

Cons: Not compatible with all Phones or newer iPods. BUT there is a solution that requires soldering and two 100k Radio$hack resistors.

Overall impression: Good deal, decent build quality, easy to take apart to "fix/modify it" to get it working with newer iPods/iphones/cell phones.

I received as a gift and can say that it out charges my other 2200 charger by 40%. The bag and extra adapters are a nice touch but i'll only be using the cable and 30 pin connector for my iPhone 4S. I love the pink color and the charging indicator. I know exactly when it's fully charged and ready to go. With a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer it's a good deal for the price.

Recently, I was forced to buy a new feature phone because sadly, my old one slipped from my shirt pocket when I bent over a bucket of scrub water to rinse a rag after mopping up muddy paw prints of eleven Saint Bernards. The one I chose was quite inexpensive but did not come with any chargers.

This is the one I chose for the car. The phone is a white Alcatel, and I was thrilled to find this charger to match it! The advantage is two-fold: 1. White electronic items are much, much easier to find when they are buried in the bottom of my purse. also easier to find at night on the floor or in the console of the car. and 2. The blue LED light is more visible than the old red one that was associated with my prior device. It actually gives off just enough light to help me find the right way around to insert the charger into the phone.

I don't know what is customary with these things, but it does a very good job of charging my phone quickly and thoroughly, and the cord is long enough that I can easily talk while it is charging.

The only con is that it doesn't stay securely in the lighter socket. Its as if the spring at the tip is too strong. Otherwise this is a great product and can't be beat for the price!

So far it works great. The iPad slot actually seems to charger the iPhone 5 pretty fast with no side-effecst thus far. It can be used for the iPhone 4 also, not just for the iPad. But overall both slots work great, charger actually charges almost as effectively as the wall charger. So far, been great.

This is a great little USB car charger. Charges our cell phone and tablet fast. It's small, but still has enough edge to it so there's something to grab onto if I need to pull it out. Price is good too. No complaints. Works well for our purposes. Soon cars will just come with USB ports instead of 'cigarette lighter' ports. But until then, this is a good one.

I purchased this item a couple of months ago despite the single one-star review that was then published. I'm glad I did. It works like a charm. I use it on a marine battery to keep it ready to go for use with my canoe trolling motor. I was concerned that it might draw power when it was not actually topping off the battery. It doesn't. When I check on it from time to time I pick it up to determine whether it is warm, like the charger on my laptop. It is always cool. It is truly automatic. It's compact, light and simple to use. At first I used the alligator clamps that came with it, but then I switched to the ring leads that are also included. They are a more secure option. I don't see how you beat this charger for the price.

I tried 2 of these chargers and both were defective, in each case there was no output and the red status lamp did not illuminate even when I purposely tried to charge a known bad battery. I have 2 other inexpensive Walmart chargers that I use to maintain the batteries in my motorcycle and streetrod but I wanted to change to a trickle charger so that could not overcharge them. I've returned both units to Amazon and I will purchase another product brand. Amazon's return policy is great, so my advice is, always buy from them.

The cradle fits my HTC Thunderbolt but the phone sits tilting forward just past straight up vertical, when it should be tilting back. My fix was a wood wedge under the base. If you can't do something like this maybe this one isn't for you.

I wanted a docking charger for my thunderbolt. When I bought my phone I did not buy any accessories for it. The store was way too expensive. So I started looking on Amazon. I came across this model. This appears to me to be the same BC209 as the more expensive all yellow version. This one is advertised as a maintainer but the directions and box refer to it as a maintainer/charger just like the yellow version. The paperwork is dated 2011 so it is a up to date model. I bought this to maintain my starting battery in my motor home while in storage which is most of the time. The "house" charger in the motor home only maintains the house battery (not the starting battery)so I was going through starting batteries way too fast from lack of use. The charger does exactly what I wanted which is slow charge then maintain the battery level. The included plug adapters are all nice quality. I chose to use the cigarette lighter adapter and it works great. The light indicates when it is charging and when it is charged. The unit runs without making any noise at all. I actually put my ear to the box and could barely hear a slight hum. From 1 inch away you can't hear a thing! Also there is no odor from the unit either. I could not be happier and highly recommend this product. Now when it is time to travel I can just start her up and go!

One of the things I look for in a charger / maintainer are voltages close to the battery manufacturer's specifications. I picked up two of the recent-model BC209's (yellow and black plastic with only one indicator light) and was pleased to find that the voltages on my agm batteries with the bc209 was 14.68 volts absorb, and 13.65 volts float as measured on a Fluke 87V multimeter.

I'm using both Odyssey and Optima agm's, and these voltages are a nice match for these manufacturers specs for maintaining. I do NOT use them for charging large batteries that have been moderately to highly discharged, and leave that duty up to higher-amperage chargers, and switch back to the BC209 when done.

At this price range, I'm not sure if it has temperature compensation, therefore I would not recommend using it long term in temperatures above 85-90 degrees fahrenheit. Fortunately, it is very quiet in the radio spectrum, and doesn't generate a lot of rf-hash.

Note that I am only using these outside the vehicle with no parasitic drain. As mentioned in the manual, with a large parasitic drain, this charger may not be able to maintain that is, it will never drop to float and that is not good for the battery to stay in absorb forever. So be wise and if it never drops to float, (steady green light indicates float) then you have other issues that need to be looked at.

Overall I'm very pleased with my BC209's as maintainer / top-off charger in this price-range for my optima and odyssey agm's.

I bought this charger for my new Motorola Backflip. The backflip was workign totally fine for 2 months. The second I plugged this charger into the phone, the cell phone started mal-functioning. It now has many glitches which require me to restart the phone several times per day. The rep at the ATandT store told me that it was probably due to the different voltage of the non-motorola charger. These things can vary slightly in voltage and a spike or surge from this charger probably ruined my phone..

Have been using this ever since I got it. The blue LED battery life indicator is a great indicator when I need to recharge it. It holds it's charge for a long time. The longest I have gone is a month of not using it, and the battery was still full. I only use this to power different kind of circuit boards, so I do not use it extensively. But, I have been through about 30 cycles and it still holds it's charge well. Would highly recommend this product. It is good quality and a decent price.

My Mazda3 would not start, battery cells dried out or just getting old.

Had to call AAA twice and at the same time ordered this unit.

Two things to pay attention to:

When charging (and this is true of any such unit) make SURE ground is NOT touching painted surface, it MUST make contact with raw metal.

If ground is touching a painted surface, the units contact indicator can give a false reading of contact.

Use the battery terminal ground at your own risk, if you do so for whatever reason, be sure there is NO fluid or fumes coming from battery.

The built-in indicator showing the units strength must be used when unit is ACTUALLY charging, otherwise false reading may occur.

This charger works exactly as designed. It's an incredibly compact unit, and it has built-in cables which can be wrapped right onto the chassis, which saves an incredible amount of space and makes it very easy to carry/move/store.

I had a riding lawnmower that was draining batteries and constandly needed to be jumped off of my truck battery, which was incredibly cumbersome. Carrying this starter out to the lawnmower, jumping it, and then mowing the lawn was 100 times easier than backing out my truck, popping the hood, untangling the cables, pulling the mower out in front of the truck, and then jump-starting it. I've since repaired the lawnmower, but am keeping this handy little charger around for my wife's car, just in case she needs it. It barely takews up any room at all, and it holds quite a charge. I've jump-started my riding lawnmower twice and the battery indicator didn't even drop (I would imagine a car would take a much higher charge and therefore drain the battery more), but it still shows how much this charger is capable of holding.

If you're looking for a portable jump-starter, this is the one for you.

I have an remote starter on my car and after work I figured I'll start my car as I walk to it. The car didn't start but the headlights were on. I went inside the car and tried to start it with the key and nada. No noise or anything. My automatic starter must've glitched. I kept trying to turn the key to start my car in hopes by magic it'll turn over. NO luck. I stopped to think for a second and then figured I'll put the car in valet mode (it's for the auto starter) to see if I could bypass the remote starter. I did and nothing. My last option was to see if i killed the battery by trying to start it so many times. I took this out of my trunk that hasn't been charged in 4 months and connected the red to the red battery terminal and the black to a nut some where on the engine. The green light turned on telling me I had a correct circuit. I then turned the knob to power on the jumper. I ran to the driver's seat and tried to start it. A sign of life! It's trying to turn over. I counted to 4 and then tried it a second time and it turned right on. The scream i let out could have been heard in China (where it was most likely made). I can't tell you how awesome this unit is. I used it several times for my DC accessories and it last a very long time. This product has yet to disappoint me. 5 STARS! Thanks for reading.

I purchased two of these units around Christmas time (Black Friday Specials). Not long after changing up the units, I had the opportunity to test them out. My neighbors 4 cylinder Nissan wouldn't start, and he came over looking for jumper cables. I proudly grabbed my fully charged jump started and walked on over. Connected it up, turned the knob, green light came on, gave in about 4 seconds to charge up, and.... nothing. Actually the motor turned over really slow for about 3 seconds, then nothing. Slightly embarrassed, I walked back home, grabbed the second unit, and jumper cables(just in case). Same scenario as the first. We ended up using the jumper cables, that once connected to a spare battery I have, fired the motor right up. A couple of weeks later, my daughter had her girlfriend spent the night. The next morning, her car battery was dead (left the trunk ajar and trunk light burned all night). Again, a small compact car (4 cylinder engine), and again both units failed to start the car. The car fired right up once connected to the RV battery and cables. I'll be tossing these in the trash, and recommend you save your money, or buy a unit with more amps. This unit might be good for a motorcycle or lawn mower type battery, but forget starting anything larger.

I suggest anyone owning or considering buying this product read the post by Robert on 11/28/2010, esp. this part:

"The built-in indicator showing the units strength must be used when unit is ACTUALLY charging, otherwise false reading may occur."

I can confirm that to be true. The indicator may show the unit at full strength when it is actually 50% discharged. It appears that you only get a true indication when it is charging that is not made clear in the manual.

I tested the amperage on the AC charger and got a reading of about 150 ma. At that rate it would take about 27 hours to re-charge the unit's 8 ah battery if it were 50% discharged. So if you use this as a 12 volt power source, you may need to charge it a while to get it fully recharged.
