I have one of each of these battery maintainers. Both of these can be connected to a battery indefinitely without boiling it dry. Both come with a set of battery clips and a set of fuse-protected ring terminals for permanent installation. Both have reverse polarity protection(hook them up to the wrong terminals, and nothing happens). The Ctek has a power cord; the BatteryMINDer 12117 plugs directly into a socket. The BatteryMINDer has a button that allows you to select maintenance mode; the Ctek has no buttons.

Some reviewers say the Ctek gets very hot; it does. The BatteryMINDer gets equally hot, and is always hot when plugged in, whether it is in the charging phase or maintenance phase. When the Ctek is in maintenance phase, it is only warm.

The BatteryMINDer 12117 manual states that it desulphates in all modes. One reviewer stated the Ctek also continually desulphates, but the Ctek manual mentions desulphation only in the first stage of battery charging. It could be continuous, but an oscilloscope would be necessary to test that, and I do not have one.

The BatteryMINDer 12117 charges a battery to about 14.1 volts; the Ctek, 14.4. After the initial charge, both go into maintenance mode. The BatteryMINDer allows the battery to drop to 13.4 volts and then keeps it there exactly. The Ctek allows the voltage to drop to about 12.95 volts, gives it a pulse up to 13.05 volts, lets it drop to 12.95 volts, gives it a pulse up to 13.05 volts, etc. If the battery being charged by the BatteryMINDer does not get up to 14.1 volts, it will not switch into maintenance mode. If it does not switch within three days, the instructions state you should manually select that with the button. The Ctek will automatically go into maintenance mode after 18 hours, if the battery has not already reached 14.4 volts and changed over.

The BatteryMINDer maintainer will eventually drain your battery(in about a week) if it is connected and the power goes off or it is accidentally unplugged, etc. The Ctek draws less than 1mA(an insignificant amount)in this scenario.

The Ctek unit is weatherproof with very weatherproof, molded-on connectors. Because the connectors are unique and no extension is available, the only way to increase the distance between the main unit and the battery you are charging is to cut the wire and splice in more. This can be avoided by mounting the charger in a vehicle's engine compartment and using an extension cord, but my engine compartment is so crowded I chose not to do this.

The BatteryMINDer is not weatherproof(they offer a more expensive unitBatteryMINDer 12 Volt OnBoard Battery Restorer/Conditioner Model# OBD-12 that is weatherproof). The connectors are molded-on and weatherproof, but they do not seal out the elements as well as the Ctek ones. BatteryMINDer also does not offer an extension, but I purchased a BatteryTender extensionBattery Tender 081-0148-25 25' Quick Disconnect Extension Cable that works perfectly.

The Ctek will push a maximum of 0.8A at 12 volts, while the BatteryMINDer is 1A at 12 volts(1.3A is what it delivers when a battery is at about 10.5 volts), making the BatteryMINDer a little faster.

At the time I am writing this, the BatteryMINDer is about $8.50 more than the Ctek.

I have given both of these five stars, and I have no preference between the two.

In a few words, this is the one 12V battery charger even I can use as in me being more computer technical than automotive technical person :).

So, before I say anything else, here are the specs so you do need to read further if this is not what you are looking for:

The charger should work with nearly all 12V lead-acid batteries: MF, Wet, AGM, open and most GEL-batteries.

What you get for your money is:

the charger body (see dimensions above) with the AC cord permanently attached to it

set of battery cables with battery terminal clips

set of battery cables with eyelet terminals

a nice, velcro-sealed nylon black pouch with a transparent pocket for the manual

a very well written manual

According to the manual, the charger should be maintenance free and it's covered by a 5-year limited warranty (void if you abuse it or try to fix it yourself after it breaks) and you get CTEK's exact address, Web site and FAX number but no 'voice' number.

I am very happy with this device because it charged our little tractor's battery in no time overnight, actually following a very long winter that had the battery totally drained. The charger operates in 4 main phases:

desulphation takes care of sulphated batteries

bulk charges up to 80%, delivers constant current until the terminal voltage reaches the set level

absorbtion completes to near-100%

maintenance battery is monitored and it receives a pulse when the voltage drops (can keep it connected indefinitely)

Feedback is provided by the charge indicator, when it's in one of the first 3 phases and the maintenance charge indicator showing that you are now in 'maintenance' mode. And, very nicely, there is an alarm light which lights up whenever your battery is connected to reverse polarity.

As far as charging times, according to the manual it varies with the size of the battery, from 1.5 hours on a 2Ah, to 6 hours on an 8Ah, 20 hours on a 20Ah and 36 hours on a 36Ah battery. Like I said, ours was done overnight.

My impression so far is of a well built, complete battery charging set that's easy to use and comes with a well-written manual that can make even non-professionals like me look like 'experts'.

I bought this after reading about it on the Ferrari forums. This is the same maintainer Ferrari provides with a new car, only without the Ferrari logo. It is compact and fits nicely in the supplied carrying pouch. I use it on my Alfa Romeo which is not driven very often. I was tired of a dead battery from the car sitting for a few months at at time. I keep the car plugged in all the time when I am not driving it. It s easy to unplug right before I drive the car and I just plug it in after I am done driving. No more dead battery. It is really nice, because when I use my car the battery is at full power and I don't worry if I go somewhere if my car will start because the battery is never low anymore. This is a generic USB charger. Nowhere on the packaging or the charger itself is there any mention that it will work with a Bold 9000. The only distinguishing mark on the charger is a little sticker that says "For V3." Did they mean to write "3v," for "3 volts?" Who knows?

I've used my Bold 9000 with other generic USB car chargers that are incapable of actually charging the phone, even though they can successfully charge other devices. The lack of the words "Blackberry" or "Bold" on the charger made me worry that this one might not work either, but it actually works just as well as the wall charger that came packaged with my phone, and may even charge more quickly.

Don't believe that this was designed specifically for the Bold 9000, because it's not. However, it works as advertised, so I still recommend it.

We bought this for our boat to go along with a new Sony stereo, 4 speakers, and subwoofer. The sound quality with just the Sony stereo and speakers was not impressive, I was ready to return everything. Lots of noise and any bass sounded awful. We decided to give the stereo and speakers a chance by buying the Sony subwoofer and amp. I am so glad we did. After hooking everything up, which was easy, the sound quality was amazing. Everything from Hip-hop to high-treble 80's music sounds great. I was worried because Sony is not known for sound quality, but I am sold from now on. I hope this review helps. After getting my boat with the factory head unit and speakers in it, I opted for sony's marine unit to add capability to the boat for using ipods-sirius-mp3 discs etc. That went great, as I could use many new modern devices, but the sound was terrible with my 2 little 25 watt RMS speakers. So then I dropped in some new polk (100 watt RMS) speakers. Much better sound but now the head unit couldn't push enough power to the speakers and the unit would start to clip the sound at higher volumes as it struggled to try and keep up. So to cure this I opted for this amp. Now I have what I consider great, clean, clear, crisp sound at very loud levels without any distortion. Now I am not the biggest audiophile out there and this is my first install of head units, speakers and amps but it is all very clear and easy to understand and do. I guess now my next move will to be to buy a sub woofer to run off the amp and then to buy a wakeboard tower and install some more speakers and then buy another amp to run those and then buy the remote commander for the stern etc...But seriously this amp so improved the overall sound and capabilities of my system that it is now something you want to use and listen to.

I bought a Ski Centurion Elite V 22' boat and wanted to upgrade the stereo system from the existing Alpine unit (which didn't have an i-pod port) and the older marine speakers. I installed this Sony Amp, along with the Sony CDXM60UI Marine Stereo and 6 Polk DB-651 speakers (4 in the boat & 2 on the tower). I had heard some good things about Lenmar nimh batteries about two years ago but had bought another brand. This time around, with the good price on Amazon, I gave these Lenmar batteries a try. I ordered two ten-packs. Only 4 out of 20 batteries would accept a charge. I tried an Energizer charger, a LaCrosse BC-900 charger, and a RipVan100 Lightning Pack 4000N charger. The LaCrosse is a high-end charger, including diagnostics on batteries (voltage, etc., displayed for each battery). None of these would charge 16 of the batteries even in the 'recovery' modes available on the RipVan and LaCrosse. Returned the batteries to Amazon.

Bought these on 6/6/7.

Right out of the box these Lenmar 1000mAh could be charged hardly to 600mAh. After several days of retesting they could barely be charged till 600-900mAh. Very disappointed by this gross misrepresentation. This Lenmar product should be sold as 600mAh. The only reaction from Lenmar's seller ANTOnline was they don't know what they are selling.

I've had 8 of these AAAs that I've been heavily using for well over a year along with a couple dozen AAs. All have them been running fine at their expected mah rating. They've excepted a charge fine every time on 3 of my chargers, all of different brands. However, about half of the AAs would not accept a charge on a fourth, Sony, 15-minute charger. So if you have problems, just try a different charger.

I'm buying 10 more of these today.

The original battery that came with my camera almost holds the same charge as when it was new. I honestly don't think Lenmar makes good quality batteries. I am not planning on buying Lenmar again.

I purchased these to replace batteries for my Panasonic KX-TGA101S phone handsets (Panasonic KX-TGA101S Extra Handset with Charger for KX-TG1032S, KX-TG1033S, KX-TG1034S Cordless Phones, Silver) which barely held a charge anymore. These are great. While I've never timed the original batteries or these replacements, they keep these handsets charged for a very long time. They can also be charged with the standard base that these handsets use. So the replacement is cheap and transparent to my family members; they just realized one day that their handsets weren't dying after a few days of usage without being recharged.

Before researching replacements for the stock batteries in my handsets, I didn't realize they used "regular" batteries that are similar to batteries I already use (eneloop)(Sanyo Eneloop Ni-MH Charger and 8 Rechargeable AA and 4 Rechargeable AAA Batteries). I've been using eneloop batteries in my other devices for some time. So, a cool thing that I do now is use the phone handsets as "free" battery chargers. When another device (such as a tv remote) dies, I just swap the batteries with the batteries from a phone handset (or two) and place the handset(s) back on the base(s). Now I always have fresh AAA batteries available without even thinking about it.

As far as I can see, these work pretty much identical to the eneloop batteries. Time will tell which ones last longer (per charge and lifetime) for the dollar, but I'm pretty sure I've found a less expensive alternative to suit my rechargeable battery needs.

Right now there are at least seven different brands of these very similar 500 amp units offered on Amazon, and Harbor Freight has one too. They all appear to be nearly identical except for the paint color and graphics. Prices range from around $50 to $160.

There do appear to be minor differences, though. If you look carefully at the photos you can see that two of the models sold on Amazon have small wires running alongside the positive and negative cables between the battery terminal clamps and the unit. In applications like this, where large currents are flowing, this is typically done so that the volt meter can accurately read the voltage at the clamps through the smaller wires, so the voltage drop through the large cables does not affect the accuracy of the voltage reading. This would be a worthwhile feature, and the funny thing is that the cheapest one sold here on Amazon has it, along with the most expensive one. The others, including the one I'm reviewing here and the HF model, do not have the extra wires.

I first bought a Sun VAT-40 for my shop in 1977, which was the "gold standard" of testers like this for many years. I was also a Sr Tech Trainer for one of the Japanese auto companies, and was later in charge of their special tools and diagnostic equipment program. I did not, of course, expect this unit to perform at the same level as more expensive professional equipment, but at some point if the functionality and accuracy are too bad then the tester is not usable. If the voltage reading, for example, is way off then you may either fail good batteries or keep those that should be replaced.

My experience with this unit is about the same as some of the other reviewers of the similar testers sold here on Amazon. I had actually ordered this one instead of one of the less costly testers thinking that the better reviews of this one possibly indicated that it was higher quality. Now, I don't think that is the case. At low current loads, the amp needle jumped around quite a bit as the load knob was slowly adjusted -so it was difficult to set the current to a specific value due to the erratic variations. This was not as apparent at the higher current levels used for larger batteries. As some reviewers of the other similar testers have also mentioned, the current reading tends to increase slowly during the test -so you have to keep fiddling with the load adjusting knob to keep the current where it should be.

Also, using two high-end Fluke DVOM's (one is a bench model used in an electronics lab), I found that the volt meter readings were quite inaccurate. I'm not talking about nitpicking, I'm talking about being off enough to compromise the results of the test. Also, the voltage reading was inconsistent in a kind of unpredictable way as the load current was increased. In other words, it was not as simple as saying that it was off by a certain percent or was off by a certain specific amount (offset/zero adjustment). It is almost as if they tried to design in some compensation for the voltage drop through the cables at higher current loads, but didn't do a good job.

My feeling at this stage of the game was that these six or seven different "brands" of these testers are probably all about the same -so why buy the more expensive one instead of the cheaper one? Also, with a 25% off coupon I was able to pick up one from Harbor Freight for just over $41 to compare against this $100 tester. Looking inside through the ventilation slots, and generally examining the units, they appeared to be nearly identical (except for paint color, etc). At first the load adjustment on the HF unit was horrible until the knob fell off -heh, heh! Once I tightened it up the load adjustment (especially at lower current values) was a little smoother than this unit. The severe inaccuracy of the volt meter was about the same.

I did not verify the accuracy of the current meter on either this unit or the HF unit. I have accurate DC current clamps that I will use when using this tester on customer vehicles (along with my Fluke 87 DVOM for voltage readings).

Conclusion: I don't think there is any significant difference between this unit and the HF tester that cost less than 1/2 of this one. The meters on both of them are not accurate enough to be taken seriously. Yes, you can see if a battery is really good or really bad, but the borderline ones will be the problem. I decided to return this one and keep the HF unit to just use it for the adjustable carbon pile, while using my other meters for the voltage and current measurements.

Why two stars? If 5 stars is an "A" and 1 star is an "F" then I think 2 stars is about right -a "D" (barely passing, needs improvement). Not really good enough for the application, and overall quality seems shaky. Too bad -if it was just a little batter it would be okay. Not great, but okay. I would gladly pay $100 to $150 for a unit that had meters with enough accuracy to do the job, and a quality level that didn't make me think it was going to fall apart after a few uses. If some of these can be sold for as little as $50, then it seems like they could make a "deluxe" one based on the same design and sell it at a decent profit for 2 or 3 times more.
