After reading the poor reviews about this product not working while charging, I still wanted to go for it. As expected the product didn't work. I emailed the vendor and he asked me to ship it back to him. I objected to pay the shipping fee and asked him for total refund. He agreed to send me a replacement saying that the one he sent could be a defective one. So the replacement arrived and as expected, it also didn't work. So I emailed the vendor about this and he agreed to refund back me in full.

I read the other reviews and hoped I would get a charger that has the special modification needed for a Navigon to charge and operate at the same time. Unfortunately the set I received were standard universal chargers and placed the Navigon into 'PC mode''. Mine was ordered from BlueMall. It will cost more to send them back that it is worth to me, so I will keep them around for other mini USB devices I own. I really dislike products with proprietary cable needs for this very reason. To be clear this (and any other mini USB) charger will charge up the gps. But to use it while it is charging you need a specially modified cable that shorts pins 4&5 and preferably puts out 1A of power. My search for a working replacement cable continues...

After extensive tests I found this charger to be really lacking in its abilities to maintain a consistant charge. The charge rate is so slow you'll need too many hours to get the battery back up to proper charge and the float level is too low for a AGM battery. Do yourself a favor and buy the one made by Tekonsha (not available on Amazon).

I have to say that this is one of the worst brand names i have bought from. First they send me a a defective charger. Also in the shipment was a tip that went to a Dell laptop computer that I didn't even own. Then they ship me a new charger and then i find out from them that my tip is non function because of a firmware change Creative just did. Well just great.... They then send me a new tip works then they send me another one of the same type!?!?!?!? After this huge mess i finaly got it working and I have to say its pretty good for what you get. It does charge much faster than the PC. Average PC charge is approx. 3-4 hours. Wall charger is 1-2 1/2. So it is good and it is portable but man does this company need to get their shipping management worked out.

I bought this unit because it has a cord on the 12 volt end so that it can be plugged into our tightly quartered cigarette lighter outlet. It also meets my power needs. Be aware, this is really only an 80 watt unit that handles 100 watts for no more than a couple of minutes. At 80 watts it will draw about 6 to 7 amps from the lighter, or accessory outlet so be sure the outlet can handle it. Our new car has three such outlets but only the lighter outlet is really up to the task (15 amps or about 15A * 14V = 210 watts). The others are fine for devices that draw only a little power like a GPS, cell phone, MP3 player, etc.

The unit has a small fan inside that comes on when the electronics inside get too warm. Be sure not to block the vent slots in the case, especially the circular ones on the bottom since this is the only intake for the fan. I don't find the fan too loud, being just barely perceptible when it comes on while I'm driving. Mine feels solid, well made, is simple to use and does what it's suppose to.

Buy VMAX857 AGM Battery 35AH Marine RV Deep Cycle HI Performance

I got the 35 amp hours rated battery (35 amps for an hour) and rated for 18-40 lb thrust trolling motors. Mine is 30 lb thrust.

The 'AGM' type, deep cycle, sealed battery was well packed (box in box) and has 2 terminals with hex head bolts that are screw in bolt with washer type posts clearly marked with a reddish color plate for the positive contact. It was 100% charged when I received it. Sturdy white plastic 4-attach-point handle.

The real nice surprise is its size and weight. I had a WalMart battery (like a regular car battery dimensions) for several years that finally failed, but performed well. But the VMAX857 is considerably smaller in all dimensions and a lot lighter. One hand handling versus a heavy 2 hand weight for the WalMart battery.

For a canoe or kayak outfitted with a trolling motor (mine is the Native Watercraft Ultimate 12), weight and size are paramount. So the VMAX is a much better choice than a 'dual purpose battery' and can be run down to about 1/2 capacity with no harm. By using a 'PWM' digital controller ($25 on eBay), the current draw is reduced a lot and more usable power to the motor.

For a casual trolling motor duty, used at lower speeds (like 1-3 of 5), this battery should recharge over 100 times if normal. I used it for the first time today, always at low or 1/2 speed for about 1 1.5 hrs running time. When I got home, I put it on the charger and it was still 100% charged!

January 1 2013 update: Now that I used it most of the spring and all summer into October as a trolling motor battery, I can tell you that it works great for my small 30$ trolling motor. Having an electric motor rigged with digital PWM speed and pushrod type steering control for your canoe/kayak opens up a lot of fun! Paddling is slow, you cannot fish as you paddle, and if a storm comes up.... with a motor you have a way to get to shelter more quickly than paddling (and I paddle as well as run the motor!). If you insist on a canoe, get a square backed one for a troller or outboard (typically 2-5 hp). And look at the Native Watercraft Ultimate series!

I bought this battery to power a trolling motor for my Ultimate 16 hybrid kayak. I needed a battery that was light enough to load and unload easily and didn't take up too much space and weight in my 'yak. This battery was just the ticket. I have a 30 lb thrust motor and this battery powered it all day without a hitch. I do not know how long it would have actually ran my motor but I was in the bay for hours tooling all around without a problem. When I got back to my house and set it up on the charger it was fully charged in a matter of minutes so it must not have been very depleted. Love the battery.
