The retractable charger is very convenient and fits in my car like a charm. I love the design of it. HOWEVER, it charges my galaxy s3 so slow that it's hardly even useful. Using turn-by-turn navigation in my car with it plugged in actually made the battery go DOWN 1% after an hour because the charging cannot keep up with the usage. But, if you drive a lot and don't use your phone while driving, those extra few percentages could be helpful.

If you need charging quick, not recommended.

Another accessory in the line of products for the iPod from Griffin Technology. I am the owner of a few of their previous products and like them for the usefulness, quality and value for the dollar. The PowerBlock is no different. This products purpose is to provide AC power to your iPod. This is useful for me when I am at work and my battery dies. The PowerBlock also comes with a usb to dock connector cable so you can leave the one that comes with the iPod at home connected either to the dock or the computer. Nice bonus because I always seem to leave it at the place I don't need it. I am kind of an iPod junkie by owning a 30G 3G, 512MB shuffle and my newest edition the 60 gb iPod with video. So needless to say I can use a charger at some point. I think it was with the 4G that Apple decided to stop including an AC adapter cause I have the one that came with my 3G. It has a Firewire connector on it. Apple now sells the USB AC Adapter as an accessory to chagrin of many iPod owners myself included. The size of the AC adapter is nice and compact and is similar to Apple's product with the foldable AC plug. This makes it nice for transporting to and from home.

So with those words we move on to the testing of the Powerblock.

Test #1 iPod Shuffle

You don't need the cable (included) to charge the shuffle. You just plug the Shuffle into the PowerBlock and the PowerBlock into the receptacle and away you go. The fit of the Shuffle is tight and this test worked just as one could expect.

Test #2 iPod 3G

As I noted above , my 3G came with a Firewire cable and AC charger. The 3G normally resides in my truck via a Kenwood adapter. Occasionally I will use this at work as well. Well the 3G needed charging and I thought I'd give the PowerBock a whirl. Using the included cable I crawled under my desk (not an easy feat) and plugged it it. The Apple icon appeared on the iPod but it would not charge. I thought I might have something wrong but how could I, it was so easy with shuffle. I did not have the packaging instructions with me at work but a quick trip to the company website put me in touch with reality ... the 3G is not compatible. So I was a bit disappointed but it was clearly documented on their website. This was confirmed by an email to tech support. It could have been more timely as it took nine days to receive an answer from Technical support. I do have to give a kudos to Griffin Technology. They have a compatibility chart on their website that references the various iPod models with their products so you can be sure the product you buy will be compatible. And I might add if you are in doubt, please feel free to email them. I think it is in the iPod's firmware but am not completely sure of that so don't quote me on it. There are reviews on the Apple website stating a Firewire cable will not charge a 4G iPod. A dock connector is not a always a dock connector I guess !!

Test #3 -iPod 5G

My pristine 5G iPod was the final test for the PowerBlock. Still new enough to be cycling the battery it was at work where it finally ran out of juice. I plugged the PowerBlock into the powerbar and using the included cable connected my iPod. No surprises here, the adapter worked as planned. During charging the adapter ran warm to the touch but not hot.

Value:

If you have a need for an AC adapter and your iPod is compatible, I highly recommend the PowerBlock. Compared to the Apple product you get the Adapter and dock connector cable for $29.99, the two separate products from Apple total $48.

Ipods are power-hungry electronic devices and sometimes it's just unconvenient to charge your Ipod through your PC when you aren't even going to use your computer while it is charging. Thankfully, Griffin made this USB power adaptor for your Ipod that you can just take with you anywhere there isn't a computer to be found. Just plug it into any wall outlet and you're set.

At about $30, it is a bit expensive once you realize that it's such a simple device, but that will pay off once you see how convenient it is. It is also small enough to fit in your pocket and the plug folds for easy storage.

To charge my Ipod through my computer it took nearly 4 hours, and for me thats a bit too long especially when I'm not even going to use my computer. With this it only took about 2 and a half hours and it seems the Ipod battery lasts alot longer when it is charged using this rather than the USB port on my computer. I don't know much about electricity and battery power but I believe it charges faster probably because it is directly in an outlet rather than the electricity having to travel all the way to the USB port of your computer and then to your Ipod.

The Griffin Power Block also comes with a USB cable. This is such a nice bonus considering the Apple USB power adaptor doesn't include one and their's costs about $10 more. I believe the Apple power adaptor is also larger.

If you want the best USB power adaptor for your Ipod 4th and 5th gen., Nano, or Shuffle then this is the one to go to.

The box states "AC charger for USB devices". I knew this was made specifically for Ipod, but I was hoping that it would charge other USB devices too (USB devices that I know can be charged through USB, that is). No luck, though, it only worked on the ipod. Worse, however, whenever I plugged a different USB device into this charger, the device would say "charging", but not actually BE charging. I had my phone plugged in all night thinking it was charging, but instead it wore down the battery more than just leaving the phone in standby mode.

So, if you're planning on getting this only for ipod, then yes, it works great. It is small, lightweight, and I love the way the plug folds in for easy travel. If you're hoping to be able to charge other usb devices, forget it... try something else.

I had some initial reservations before purchasing this product, since the description did not mention compatibility with the iPod touch 2G. However, Griffin Technology's site indicated that it was indeed compatible and I went with that.

Another concern was whether or not the cable would support syncing as well as charging, since other products I researched did not offer this capability.

I'm happy to report that this product meets my needs perfectly. I'm able to charge my iPod touch 2G via USB or with the adapter, and the detachable USB cable also works to sync my iPod. I'm very pleased with the product.

Although this product accomplishes its end goal of charging your Ipods, there are simpler an cheaper methods for accomplishing this. First let me review the product:

Strengths:

It's Apple white (like anybody cares any more)

The charger itself allows the prongs that insert into the outlet to be folded away for convenience, protection, etc.

You get a spare communications cable that attaches to your Ipod and the computer; so you have a spare

The connector for the charger unit is a basic USB connector so you can use this to charge other USB devices such as those that you connect with a mini-USB connection (cameras, Nintendo DS-Lite, etc.)

Weaknesses:

The charger is only the basic USB 2.0 standard amperage. This is a shame because although this may be fine for the Ipod if you wanted to charge other USB devices, this may only represent a trickle amperage and you device will charge slowly.

Essentially, it works and its convenient but not perfect.

Recommendation:

Go to Walmart, go to the Electronics section, find one of the many multi-plug universal chargers with USB charging capability, get the one with the largest amperage capacity, save at least $10, and enjoy the fact that you came out ahead AND can charge / power multiple devices when needed.

I love those cheapo stuff Amazon sells, like those USB hubs with SD card reader selling for less than $5.00, a bluetooth USB adapter for less than $3.00 and so on. Most of my purchases of those cheapo stuff from Amazon work fine, but often durability may be an issue, or you don't know what kind of material manufacturers of those cheapo stuff used (they could be super toxic, who knows? Most of them have no valid labels.), or have no idea where to go to get some (or any at all) support.

I bought this iPod charger, not because I needed it, but because the price was so low, I just had to have it. Of course, the shipping was so much more expensive than the actual item. When I received the unit, it was in a clear plastic bag with white label with nothing on it. I opened the bag and plugged it in, and connected my iPod Classic (6G) to this charger. The charger itself was lighting up the red LED inside the white charger casing, making the whole unit looking pink, but nothing was happening to my iPod. I pushed the connector up a bit and for a moment my iPod went into charging mode (the battery icon with a little bolt icon) but as soon as I set the iPod down on the table, the charging icon would go away. I tried a few times, with different iPods that I have, but none of them really worked. There was either jittery connection or no connection at all. Oh well, my two dollars down the drain, and I should have learned the lesson by now... but I never do! These cheapo stuff has such a weird allure to me, and I just keep spending my money on them.

I sometimes laugh when I read other people's review for this type of cheapo stuff that doesn't work. A lot of people get genuinely upset for an item they paid the bottom price for. So, my conclusion is that this charger probably would work if the connector is making a good connection to the iPod's connection plug, but obviously with my copy at least, that is not happening. (I don't want to give these people who's selling these items a bad rap and I have no doubt that these chargers work fine when they do, but I am sure I just got a lemon.) So if you are enticed by the price of this piece, think of it as a gamble. You may get the one that is working perfectly from the start (other cheapo stuff worked for me well), or like mine, not quite working. You can go through the painful procedure of RMA and returning and all that, or save yourself and spend at least $10 for a decent charger (well, maybe $20 to get a real "decent" one). Heck, Apple is charging people $20 for their iPod to USB cable alone... So this charger is a huge huge bargain. Just don't expect this less-than-two-dollar item to be just as good as $20 charger... (You don't expect a 99cent-store screwdriver to last a lifetime, do you?) So there, from my experience, I am giving two stars...

First of all. I gave it one star due to the awesome fast shipping. Now as far as the product goes, I bought it for my ipod 80Gig classic, plugged it in and NOTHING! It looks nice though (big deal). Really the only upside is that I am only out $3.81. I noticed on the invoice that it said iphone 3G charger however, when the box arrived it did in fact say ipod. Either way, it does not work. Trust me! This thing does not charge ipod classics. Spend the extra money and buy a charger that you know will work. I would recomend buying from the same carrier because this is the only problem I have ever had with them. NOTE: I found out that if it charges iphones, it will not charge the ipod classic.

I now feel fortunate to have only lost one iPod. Luckily mine didn't need charging. The company did not respond to my inquiry email before purchase nor my complaint email afterward. First thing I'll do is compliment Amazon.com's customer service. They gave me a partial refund (since I decided to keep this and use that money in search of a third party tip), but that doesn't do anything about the fact this product is useless. Let me explain.

The product's description is generic, saying it'll fit all the most popular laptops/netbooks/tablets. Well, I don't think this company actually did the market research to figure out which products are the "most popular", since this would require a painstaking amount of research. My product, made by a major manufacturer (ASUS) and part of an incredibly popular line of netbooks (EEE series, although recent sales are admittedly lackluster) had no tip. My fiance's laptop also did not have a fitting tip. And lastly, several devices around my desk did not have a fitting tip, although I can't hit them on this since that wasn't part of the deal. Point is don't expect this to fit your device.

THE WORST part of all of this, which is why this is a one star instead of two (they did have a Micro-USB charger so I guess if you want to lug around a device that's 4 times the size of your cellphone knock yourself out) is the fact that I directly emailed the manufacturer on their website asking for a tip, with the possibility in mind that I will have to pay for at least the shipping. Needless to say, the vendor blatantly ignored my message, so if you expect support for your product, good luck and godspeed.

You're best off buying an extended battery for your laptop, or buying a much cheaper cellphone battery-extender elsewhere.

EDIT: Think the warranty process will be easy? Think again. They finally responded when I sent them multiple emails, because I ended up using the device on my fiance's laptop (where it under performed, see above) and the cable started intermittently disconnecting. Apparently sending the Amazon order number isn't enough, and they made me take a photo of the device to send to them in order to get a dinky, cheap cable. A few days later, the device's lights all lit up at the same time and then crapped out permanently while charging a USB device. This straight up sucks.

Update: Check out this message they send on May 7, 2013. Device should still be under warranty, right? Nah. They basically throw Amazon under the bus:

Needed additional power for my mobile devices Laptop/iPad/Droid and this baby does the job and more! The Boulder 15 Solar Panel is most often sold with the Escape 150 battery pack (the Coffee Maker looking battery), such as in this "kit". The advertisement above says to expect to fully charge the Escape 150 battery from empty charge in about 15 hours using the panel. When I bought the two together I charged the battery to full and then ran it down to empty. The next morning at sun up (I live in the California desert mountains . . so I'm high above the haze layer and have 100% crystal blue sky and sun) so I faced the panel directly at the sun for 11 hours solid. At the end of that time I was knocking on the door of 80% power (75%??) according to the battery charge indicator, and took the next day for another 3 hours (total of 14ish hours) to get the Escape 150 fully charged. Recommendation: if you're going to run the Escape 150 down to empty during the day/night (for laptops, etc.) then you'll need two (2) Boulder 15 solar panels (daisy-chained) to fully recharge the battery the next day. NOTE: Also, I did run the battery to empty off 3 of their LED lights (which are outstanding at 207 illumens 3-watt, "Light-a-life" as they're called). Manufacturer states to expect getting 16 hours of light (with 3 lights daisy chained). I got 17 hours 10 minutes with the Escape 150 battery.

This items works as advertised. I was able to trickle charge my car battery using the optional Goal Zero 4.7 mm to female cigarette adaptor. The items looks and feels well built. I also was able to charge a 12V 8Ah AGM battery used for my small electronic devices. I look forward taking this solar panel during camping trips.

The solar panel arrived well packaged and with no discernible damage. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the actual time to charge the goal zero 350 takes about 15 20% longer than advertised, and one needs to keep moving the panel every few hours to follow the sun to get the best results. This purchase was actually my second panel so I could chain it to another Boulder 15 panel to get faster charging. If you are trying to decide between the Boulder 15 and the Boulder 30 to use with the Goal Zero 350, the Boulder 30 is probably the better deal.

Absolutely love Goal0 and recommend it to my friends that hike, bike, ride, and boat.

Brought this out while primitive camping out in Joshua Tree National Park for 8 days. We had 2 DSLR cameras, 2 iPhones, 1 ipad, 1 laptop, 1 GoPro camera and never ran out of power. We used these to charge our Nomad 150 battery pack during the day while we were out climbing and would charge all of our electronics at night and would still have 20% charge left over.

Obviously when hiking in several miles to set up a base-camp every ounce counts. The panels and battery pack fit perfectly and easily into my pack with my clothing and honestly, I forgot I was even carrying it.

I don't mean to sound dramatic but having portable power has become life changing. I planned on only spending 4 days of my vacation in the woods doing video and night photography and with the constant power available I was able to constantly dump and edit photos and charge batteries and edit time-lapse videos with out worry.

I highly recommend this for anyone that enjoys time away from the grid, but still enjoys the convenience of electronics.

I also bought the Nomad 7 and charge that right on my backpack, or on my car dashboard depending where and what I'm doing.

Battery Replacement Kit for Garmin Nuvi 680 with Installation Reviews

However, there were a few things lacking. Under the "Technical Details" for this replacement kit, it clearly says "Kit Includes Everything You Need to Revive Your Garmin Nuvi 680 GPS" but this isn't the case. One, you need a "sharp object" as they call it, in order to push in the spring casing to release the antenna. Nothing that was included with the packaging does the job. Two, the small phillips screwdriver that they include in the package was too small for the screws on my Garmin Nuvi 680 circuit board. In fact the screwdriver is so much smaller that I couldn't even feel it slipping on the screw which lead me to nearly stripping out the first screw which would have tanked the whole project and made my Garmin worthless. My last complaint which is very minor is that the video does not do a good job of showing exactly how to remove the spring case. The camera angle doesn't do the user any good. I spent probably 15 minutes carefully poking around looking for where this release point was. I was able to find a guide on ifixit that had a great closeup of exactly where to push to release the spring.

On the plus side, the small screwdriver that DOES work was magnetized which made life so much easier than it would have been if they hadn't done this.

In the end my Garmin has a new battery and that saved me about $100. I'm giving this product three stars because I was a few flecks of metal away from making it impossible to change out the battery. It does work, you just need some extra tools, and in my case another website for that one pic, and you need to be very careful along the way.

The tools and battery are just what you need, but the video is a bit lacking for someone that hasn't taken a unit apart previously. A diagram showing where the retractable pin is actually located would really help when removing the antennae. Also, beware of flying spring when you perform that step it's under tension and keeps the pin in place.

Also, the video doesn't stress the importance of how careful you really need to be when you separate the LCD display from the circuit board the ribbon cable connections are extremely fragile, and if you break one you might as well toss the whole unit in the trash right then and get a new Garmin.

Literally, in 15 minutes I had the old battery out, the new battery in, and had a Nuvi that looked and acted like new again-and while I'm not a klutz, I had never taken apart a GPS before. Let me start off by saying my goal of ordering this was to hardwire a Pi into my vehicle. I was looking for an option that allowed for the easiest install and this was the only hardwire kit I found (others probably exist now). At the same time of install I was doing a stereo replacement so I tapped into those wires as not to have a always on charger. I needed it to turn off when the vehicle was off. This also resulted in it working correctly in acc mode.

Pros:

Easy two wire, power and ground. Took all of 5 minutes to splice together wires. Allows me also to charge my cellphone, very convenient. Steady supply, no glitches from this power supply.

Cons:

None really aimed at the product. Shipping took a few weeks but that is not the products fault.

If you are looking to hardwire your Pi into your car this power supply works flawlessly. No random issues with dropping power or hectic pi actions due to unstable supply.

If you own a Nuvi 765T you probably know by now that when constantly using the unit powered from the car's cigarette lighter, the original battery will drop dead and loose its ability to charge pretty quickly. After about 2 years owning one, the battery would hold a charge for no longer than 5 minutes. I was sure I'd find an elegant solution out there to service the unit myself, and sure enough, I came upon this product/

This is a very practical solution to refurbishing your Nuvi 765T GPS. It comes complete with a screwdriver and lever needed to unscrew and pry the unit open. A double-sided tape would have been a nice add-on but I was able to use the one I peeled off the old battery from inside the GPS. There is also not much room for the battery to room around inside so I wasn't too worried. All in all, it took me 3 minutes to replace the battery.

Highly recommendable to make a low cost battery uplift to your used / battery depleted unit.

I didn't know what I was getting into when I bought this kit with a DVD to tell me how to install a new battery in my Garmin Nuvi 765T. I was very pleasantly surprised to see (by watching the enclosed DVD that ran without a hitch on my computer) that I just had to unscrew two small screws in the back, use the green shimmy tool to GENTLY pry open the case (and this was the hardest part took me probably about 6 minutes, but it wasn't awful...just had to be careful and patient the video made it look a bit easy), disconnect two circuits on the board which came out easily, take out the old battery (again, a little patience required because of the cement-like glue they use to hold it to the back of the Garmin's case), use a piece of double-sided tape which I had in a drawer (didn't come in the kit...sounds like some people get double-sided tape and others don't) to seat the new battery where the old one was and stick it down, then go in reverse!

Having the DVD helped relieve any anxiety about the "procedure" of opening up my GPS. It really was easier than I had expected. The battery showed 4 bars (full) on my Garmin when I booted it back up, which made me smile. :) Charging now for the heck of it and I plan to give it a shot tomorrow since I use my GPS several times a week. Now I can spend the money I saved on maps for life. Thanks, seller, for a GREAT product I'll definitely be back if I need your help again! :D CHEERS!

I am not sure whether our Garmin is simply a lemon or whether this product is. It might well be the former but either way we have no functioning GPS. Installation was simple thanks to the accompanying video and our Garmin appeared to kick in with full power when we first charged it up. But, alas, it drained, displayed "Low Battery," and stopped working within 30 minutes just as it had prior to switching out the battery. Very annoying. I would make sure you truly have a battery issue before you purchase this because we obviously can't go back to Garmin now having opened the unit and installed this.

After finally tiring of an original Garmin battery in my 765T that simply wouldn't hold a charge very long, I decided to give this DIY product a try because Garmin's service department wanted around $100 and 2 weeks for battery replacement! Well I can now say that the all-in-one solution this kit provides takes out all the guesswork from the process and did the job for me completely, and for far less than shipping it back to Garmin.

My kit came in an easy-to-open clamshell case along with an instructional DVD in a white paper sleeve. Although not needed for my installation, a note tucked inside the DVD sleeve informed me that the instructional video could also be downloaded if the DVD was unplayable for any reason. I did a quick view of the DVD instructions so I knew what to expect and then opened up the kit and got to work. I followed right along with the DVD, pausing it after each instruction segment to perform the next step. The entire process from start to finish was about 10 minutes. My GPS then fired right up with a full 4-bar battery charge showing right out of the package. The instructions recommend fully charging the new battery anyway for at least 2 hours before using the unit. My 765T now holds a charge just like it did when it was brand new and I'm very satisfied with how easy the kit made the job!

From reading other reviews, it seems like there sometimes were (and still could be?) differences in what some people received in their kit. I don't know whether or not there was a quality control issue but my kit came complete. It contained the appropriately sized Torx screwdriver for the 2 case screws, a double-ended plastic shim/pry for case separation and old battery removal, a strip of double-sided tape to hold the new battery in place, and the replacement battery itself.

One minor complaint (and the reason for giving a 4-star rating instead of 5) -the replacement battery is advertised to be a High Capacity Extended Life battery that "offers even more up time than your original". Mine came printed with a rating of 1250 mAh, exactly the same rating as the original Garmin 765T battery it was replacing. That issue aside, this kit makes it easy and inexpensive for you to replace your unit's battery, thus extending its useful life, and is definitely recommended!
