This is a superior product in every category design, finish, and performance. The manual is a model of clarity, and install and setup went without a hitch. Mounting the unit, due to the weight, posed a problem, but only because I installed it in a closet, so had to mount a winch temporarily, as the otherwise required number of people could not fit in the install space. Fortunately, the unit is well balanced, so single point suspension worked fine, and the case is unbelievably sturdy so attaching was trouble-free as well.

Buy Optima 8040-218-FFP YellowTop Group 35 Deep Cycle Battery

This will be a mixed review of sorts.

I bought an Optima SC35DA Yellow Top directly from Amazon in August of 2009 and it worked fine until March of 2011. The plastic around the negative battery post just split with gas and gel oozing out.

I did not think there was any problem because this Optima battery comes with a three year full replacement warranty.

Now the warranty merry go round started.

I called Amazon and I was told to call Optima, Optima told me they would not warranty the battery because Amazon is not an authorized reseller, so back to Amazon, then back to Optima and so on.

The final result is that Amazon wound up giving me a full refund of the purchase price of the battery. I would rather of had a new battery but I got tired of the BS and aggravation and then I did what others did, I went to a local discount store and bought a cheap battery.

What is the point of spending $174.00 on what is supposed to be the best battery only to have it fail very early in its life cycle and then have to argue over getting it replaced?

The Optima battery worked for less than two years. So why spend the money on one when you can buy a Wal-Mart special for less than half the price, get it replaced locally or just throw it out and buy a new one.

I do have to thank Amazon for finally giving me the refund but there was too much aggravation involved. From all of the complaints I have read about the lack of a warranty when the Optima Battery is bought from Amazon, you would think Amazon would stop selling it.

This is exactly why I gave it only one star.

I can only recommend that no one should by any Optima Battery Product from Amazon unless they are fully aware that there is no warranty at all.

Wow! I am both relieved and impressed. I just purchased two of these batteries. After reading previous horror stories about damaged/no packaging I have to admit I was hesitant. I have had other problems with Amazon.com in the past. I just couldn't resist the price here, and with free shipping it sealed the deal. I guess whoever does the shipping here got the message about poor/damaged packaging. Mine were both delivered undamaged by UPS(this is an extraordinary occasion), and to my surprise the boxes were designed like tanks. Extra thick cardboard boxes with an entire lining of corrugated cardboard reinforcement all the way around the battery. The batteries inside were in perfect condition!!! A+ job here by Amazon.com!!! BTW shipping was also lighting fast....I ordered on Sat and batteries arrived on Tues.

If I could give zero stars I would... I know its cheaper here, but this battery just died after 6 months of normal use. Amazon will not stand behind this product and will not accept returns. Optima will also not warranty from an unauthorized seller. Funny, they left that off the listing for this battery. I learned my lesson, so hopefully everyone reading this will learn theirs too without the loss of $$. Unacceptable business practice in my opinion. FAIL.

Hi i recently purchased a D35 optima battery and it came broken so bad the cell was EXPOSED before i bought this battery i read previous comments about a guy receiving a damaged battery without proper packaging.i assumed that this problem was known to the shippers and they would correct it .So why am i in the same position today ? my battery came in a very thin box and packing to ship a (feather) come on !this battery is 35 pounds it needs to be secured on the corners where it is most weak .amazon is great but this shipper is not .

The aligator clips makes it very easy to charge whatever scooter or motorcycle I want charged. I can't understand why the original had circle ends that made you unbolt the postive and negative connections of the battery so you install them to the battery and charger. The aligator clips eliminates the need to unbolt anything by just cliping it to the end of the positive and negative connections on the motor scooters battery.

I would avoid AeroVironment's charging station. I have one and my charging station is 11 months old now; it fails about once a week, sometimes more often. By "fails" I mean vehicle charging stops and the trouble light illuminates. The charging station trouble light can only be reset manually by cutting off the circuit breaker to the unit (hopefully you've installed one near the charging station, otherwise you'll have to go to the panel box). This is annoying when this happens during overnight charging cycles and the vehicle doesn't get charged. Big unpleasant surprise in the morning. Despite repeated calls to AV and promises from them, nothing has been resolved to date.

I know others have had good luck...that hasn't been my experience. And, my charging station was professionally installed through the vehicle manufacturer's ordering website.

PROS:

I've had this product installed in my garage for 14 months and have had no problem with it. It interfaces perfectly with the timer on my Leaf to insure that I charge during off-off-peak hours without fail. I'm confident every morning that I will be on my way with a full charge.

This charger is well made of high quality component parts, but it's grossly overpriced. If the ultimate goal here is to have legions of EV's out there then critical accessories such as this charger (must have item for any EV owner) must cost much less than I had to pay here ($1,100 incl. shipping), and the unit must be professionally installed (could easily cost another grand). In my own case, I'm an electronics engineer, I installed this myself, and configured it so it is portable. Taking it with you is necessary, there are not enough stations out there yet. And as I say, it's too damn expensive, could really be had for much less (hello any capitalist business types out there especially green ones!). Ultimately, this is a very well made, quality and very EXPENSIVE product, delivered in good condition and in a timely fashion, by those good folks out there at AMAZON. If you are trying to support the Tesla, don't buy this product!

You can save about $1000 buy getting the NEMA 14-50 dryer socket ($20) instead. (Made by many vendors.)

This is the same socket you find in RV-parks.

This product is a glorified extension cord. The Telsa cars come with their own cord.

If you do buy this product, be sure to make the electrician install it using the NEMA 14-50 plug and socket.

It is not clear to me why auto companies want to make it so difficult to plug in, and require a "charger".

This review is in response to some comments regarding wire and fuse size selections for this inverter and others like it.

In response to other review quoting a table from the National Electric Code (NEC). While the table that was posted is correct for 115VAC (household voltage) is does not translate directly to 12VDC (automotive voltage). When dealing with a 12 volt system there is less concern with wires overheating, at least in the way that the NEC considers it, and far more concern with voltage drop. When running wiring a reasonable distance (a couple hundred feet or so) there is little concern with voltage drop with AC power. But when dealing with DC, simply increasing your wiring distance 5-10' can have a drastic effect on voltage drop. That is why this inverter should be wired with, at the very least, #4 wire and really should be installed with #2 or thicker, especially if you need to run wire 15 or 20 feet or more.

The purpose of a fuse in a DC system is to protect the rest of your electrical system in the event of a short. That is why you always want to install your fuse as close to the battery as possible (no more then 3' if you can help it). As far as the amperage goes, there is a really good quick reference chart for automotive wire size that can be found at Tessco's web site here:[Turns out I can't link to an outside page so I'll paste the contents of the table at the bottom]. But to boil it down, you can safely fuse a 12VDC circuit at 150, or 200 amps, or more on #4, #2 or #0 wire.

Now this unit at full load is something like 85% efficient. So if you do the math -1500 Watts / 12 Volts / .85 efficiency = ~147 amps, A 150 AMP FUSE IS REQUIRED. If you take peak power into account you would need to double that to a 300 amp fuse, but because the inverter cannot run at peak power for more then a moment, a slow-blow 150amp fuse may work just fine, or perhaps you could step up a 200amp. I wouldn't go all the way to a 300 amp fuse unless you really found that you needed it and had the inverted is wired in such a way that it could handle that level current (read: installed using very heavy gauge wire). Now if your vehicle is running while your inverter is working the amperage will be a little lower because your dealing with 14.4 VDC rather then 12 volts (watts = volts x amps -oramps = watts / volts). But at the very least, a 150 amp ANL fuse is very good idea and not at all over sized.

Just a FYI on fuses, most car stereos are installed with AGU style fuses, but they only go up to 100 amps.

You will need an ANL style fuse to get one rated at 150 amps or more. See these links for examples:

Only way this unit would be worth anything is as a last resort. Even in full sun it rarely generates more then 120 mA and 80 mA is probably the average and the slightest wisp of cloud drops it to near zero. With todays 2000-2750 mAH rechargeable batteries this unit would take 125 hours to charge 4 2500 mAH batteries. Assuming 6 hours of "full" sun a day at 80 mA it would take almost 21 days to charge those four batteries. Real world would be more likely a month.

Like I said, maybe if it was all I had, but there are better places to spend your money.

I bought one of these several years ago and am surprised these are still made.

As someone has already mentioned, this unit doesn't provide a lot of power. You're really looking at weeks to completely charge a set of batteries and that's if you have a place that gets sun most of the day. Having it inside a window causes a pretty significant drop in amps, but leaving it outside for weeks isn't a great alternative either. Obviously partial charges and top ups may work for some people, but for most this is just not efficient enough.

But another big problem with this unit is the batteries are in a closed plastic case in the sun. Heat degrades rechargable batteries and I doubt any manufacturer would recommend it for such an extended period as this solar charger requires. I don't feel comfortable with how hot they get as it probably shortens the battery lifespan. There's a platicky smell when it heats up. There really should be an air gap and a more open case that allows excess heat to be carried away.

With two big flaws, I think people should apply their money toward a better charger, even if more expensive.

Cheap Smart Dual Battery 140A Isolator - Auto/Boat/RV

I purchased this VSR to isolate a battery in my truck camper. It is a little more expensive than a conventional battery isolator but it is smaller and easier to connect. I have tested it with my volt meter and thus far it has worked perfectly. It turns on at 13.3 volts (which protects your aux battery from being used as a starting battery by switching on only once the staring battery is fully charged). And cuts out at 12.8 volts (which keeps you from draining your starting battery when using your aux battery without the engine running). A nice feature is a little LED light that indicates when it's engaged. Also, it's rated for 140 amps, which is well over my electrical needs.

There is an option to buy this same VSR with a kit, but I opted not to buy the kit because I needed higher gauge wire, and I could get it at a lower overall cost. Because of the thicker wire, I had to modify the wire inlets a little, but it was easy. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to isolate a battery.

I am using this in a Ford e350 van, converted to a camper, to maintain the truck battery under the hood and maintain 2 deep cell marrine batteries in the back, which i run a fridge/micro, etc. with using a 1500 watt inverter. I was told by many old school camper guys this setup wouldn't work, but it works great! The VSR is small and lightweight, and simple to hookup and use. It has one simple LED light letting you know where it's sending voltage. Proper gauge wire is imperative, i have 6 gauge run to all batteries, with a 150 amp ANL fuse, and have had no trouble at all with this unit. I returned a much larger, heat synced Northern tool unit after i saw the difference in size. This one is great under the hood of a van or any tight space.

Word of note: I did have to trim some of the plastic away where my wires run in and out of the unit. It's 2 pieces and you have to trim away part of the cover if you're using proper gauge wire to get it to sit on the base correctly. This will make sense when you see the unit in person, and it's pretty obvious the manufacturer intended for you to cut or drill depending on your application.

For it being 2 simple voltage sensitive relays it is a little pricey at $75 bucks. But it works as advertised and does keep the batteries properly charged.

The only issue I see is that till all batteries in the system drop to about 12.7 volts it does keep them connected. I have mine on a diesel pick-up. I will have to place a heavy diode in the wire somewhere or a switch of some type in the winter due to the truck really needing the 13.3 volts the start batteries have without this slight issue.

This is not your father's isolator. This is a smart device which senses both batteries and if either one is receiving a charge, it will enable charging of both.

Most importantly if you park your tow vehicle and shut down the motor so it is no longer providing current to charge both batteries, it will isolate them and protect your starting battery. Without the isolation, devices in your boat/camper can discharge both batteries and you will be unable to start in the morning when you are ready to get the day going. I have had this happen to me.

This is not just an old fashioned isolator which uses diodes and actually reduces the amount of current available to charge the batteries. That is why those older style isolators have such a large heat sink (the finned aluminum base) to dissipate the wasted energy. Notice that this isolator does not have, and does not require, a heat sink because it uses a relay that it closes or opens and has no energy loss due to internal resistance.

So yes, it is a little more costly than the older "diode" isolators, but it will do a much better job protecting your batteries!

This product has been useful for my Galaxy S2. I get to play my music in my car and charge my phone. I don't have any issues with the sound of the music. However, you cannot charge your phone and listen to your music without a high pitch tone occurring that only gets louder if you try and turn the music up. Although, you can be charging one phone while listening to music from a different phone, which works for my family since we all have Samsung phones that fit to the adapter; there is only an issue when you are trying to charge and listen to music from the same phone. Things I would like to see improved is a station scan for available stations; you have to go through each station individually, which is okay when I'm in my local area but not when I am traveling and don't know the stations. Other than that, I am happy with my purchase.

This is the second one of these transmitters I have owned and they are by far the best on the market. They are simple and very well made. There is zero static when playing through the radio, and all music frequencies are crystal clear(with cell phone or ipod all the way up). The charger attachment is a great bonus as well. I would recommend this to anyone who's car does not have an auxiliary jack on it. This item is amazing. My first one lasted for over 3 years and was going strong until I broke the wire accidentally. I drive an old car and I commute a long distance to work so I listen to a LOT of audiobooks on first an iPod and now a galaxy 2S. I have become a connoisseur of transmitters of all sorts. This is not a good one. The audio was terrible, very scratchy and distorted. If I held it a certain way it wasn't too bad but that is completely not workable for a car that bumps down the road. I don't want to have an accident from messing with my transmitter. I've had really cheap $5 models that were more clear. Customer service tried very hard to keep me from returning it but finally relented. That bothered me also. That sort of tactic makes me think their business model is based on selling cheap stuff that people won't bother to return and demand refunds. I bought the 14.4V with two batteries and it's a very nice tool. Mine was made in Taiwan. If I had it to do over again I'd probably go with the 12V due to the weight. The 14.4 is pretty big and I ended up making a shoulder strap since I use it for lubing a tractor with lots of grease fittings. I also went for two batteries thinking I might reach for it and have to wait for it to recharge. But you can leave a battery on trickle charge all the time so it will always be ready. Bottom line: the 12V with one battery is considerably cheaper and will also be lighter.

I bought this grease gun mainly for use on my Loader Backhoe which has over 40 grease fittings and usually uses over 14oz of grease every time I grease it. I have a air grease gun in my shop but I often leave my backhoe at the worksite. This grease gun goes any where with its case and extra battery and cut my grease gun time in half, it is very well made and should last a long time. I have many yard maintance equipment that requires this type of battery. I am able to use it on all my equipment. The equipment I have is DR brand type. So when my charger broke for my HTC I was desperate to find something quick, I mean.. there was only so long that my old one would charge w/ the wire wrapped around my phone. When I came across this product I was excited, 3 chargers for pretty much $4?!(incl. shipping). Sounded like a steal to me! Figured, even if this product sucked I was only wasting $4 anyway which could have gone to something far less useful. It took regular ground shipping to arrive, came packaged in little plastic bags save for the car charger which was in a thin paper box. I've used everything in the set The home wall charger works fine, is sturdy, and I have yet to have a problem, the car charger works just as well although feels a little fragile and light. The only reason I'm not giving this product 5 stars is due to the USB cable. My original charger was a USB cord that could plug into a separate wall jack, tossed out my broken USB and plugged the new one in -it barely lasted a week! The plastic around the metal that fits into your phone snapped off in two pieces leaving the wires exposed. Was able to use it for a day before the wires tore :(
